Old School RuneScape (OSRS) does not offer player-accessible character backups, a general lost-item ticket service, or individual account rollbacks. Jagex’s current support guidance limits item returns to specific, verified incidents—such as a news-post-confirmed exploit, Jagex staff error, or a Group Ironman storage malfunction. A game-wide rollback is an extremely rare integrity measure, not a way to undo one player’s mistake.
If an item seems missing, check your inventory and bank first, then ask Diango about recoverable holiday items. Do not use the RuneScape 48-hour claim process as an OSRS remedy: that form is explicitly for RuneScape accounts only. Jagex has also not published the frequency, retention period, or technical design of its internal OSRS backups.
What Jagex’s OSRS policy actually provides
Several different ideas are often called a “backup” or “restore,” but they are not the same thing. A player-requested rollback, an ordinary lost-item ticket, a Jagex-initiated incident response, and an internal server backup have different purposes and availability.

Jagex’s wording is unambiguous on the most common request: “Please be aware that we are currently unable to offer a general lost item service for Old School.” That does not mean every item-loss incident is ignored. It means eligibility comes from a qualifying, verifiable incident rather than from the fact that an individual player lost something.

Can Jagex restore my lost OSRS items?
Usually, no individual restoration is available. Jagex’s limited OSRS returns are tied to events it can verify at the game or service level.
Cases that can qualify
- A verified exploit: If Jagex confirms an exploit in an official news post, it may return items or provide a defined make-good plan for affected accounts.
- Human error by Jagex staff: An item loss caused by an operational mistake may be handled as an incident.
- Group Ironman storage malfunction: A confirmed storage failure can fall within the limited return policy.
Jagex says these processes usually identify affected players automatically. When an incident affects many players, a news post may explain what happened and how the make-good will work. That is different from opening a normal ticket and proving a personal loss.
Losses that are normally not restored
The policy excludes losses that cannot be verified or that appear fraudulent. It also lists categories such as temporary holiday items, items recoverable through Diango, unique quest items, certain pets and items that grant experience among request types that will not be returned. Read those exclusions together with the narrow incident exceptions; an exception is not a blanket override for every excluded item.

Checks to make before treating an item as gone
- Open your inventory and bank, including tabs and search results, and check whether the item was deposited, noted or moved.
- Confirm that you are on the intended character and account. OSRS profiles are separate from RuneScape profiles, so logging into the other game will not show the same items.
- Speak with Diango. Some holiday items can be recovered from him in OSRS.
- Review recent activity, trade history and storage locations you control. If the loss is a normal death, trade, drop or account compromise rather than a verified service incident, the general restoration policy does not create an appeal route.
- Look for an official Jagex news post if a widespread outage, exploit or Group Ironman storage problem occurred. An announcement is the signal that an incident process exists.
Can I request an individual OSRS account rollback?
No. Jagex’s rollback policy states: “We are unable to rollback individual accounts for you, regardless of what the reason for wanting this is.” The refusal covers requests intended to undo a scam, accidental trade, unwanted level, mistaken purchase, death or other personal event.
What a game-wide rollback means
A game-wide rollback is described as an “extremely rare” last resort used to protect game integrity. Jagex may provide warnings and status updates where possible. It is a coordinated intervention affecting the game, not a selectable restore point for one character, and it cannot be requested to recover one player’s inventory.
Skill experience and resets
Jagex also says it cannot remove experience from accounts for players. The skill-experience removal feature described for RuneScape is not available in Old School. RuneScape-only instructions involving Nastroth, eligibility levels, a seven-day wait or a six-month interval therefore do not provide an OSRS reset method.

Does the 48-hour lost-item form apply to Old School?
No. The 48-hour reporting window, possible restoration or equivalent value, and claim limits appear in the RuneScape section of Jagex’s support material. The page specifies that the claim is for RuneScape accounts only. Do not submit that process expecting it to restore an OSRS character.
OSRS instead follows the separate policy described above: no general lost-item service, with narrowly defined incident-based returns. Confusing the two games is easy because they share a Jagex account, but their characters, economies and support rules are not interchangeable.
Are OSRS character backups stored somewhere?
Jagex necessarily operates server-side systems to run OSRS, protect account data and recover from operational failures, but its public support guidance does not document those systems as player-accessible backups. It does not publish a backup schedule, retention period, number of snapshots, restore success rate or a customer-facing point-in-time restore workflow.

Consequently, you should not infer that you can download an OSRS save, select yesterday’s snapshot or ask support to load a private backup. The word “backup” in a support or historical context does not establish any of those capabilities.
“Backup version” is a historical description, not a save file
Jagex describes Old School RuneScape as having launched in 2013 as a backup version based on RuneScape from 2007. OSRS then evolved into its own game, and players had to start from scratch. Jagex says profile progress is completely independent: character information, stats and items do not transfer between the two games. The historical phrase “backup version” therefore does not mean your individual character is a restorable copy of a RuneScape character.

Player-requested remedies versus incident response
The practical distinction is whether you are asking Jagex to change one account or whether Jagex has declared a service-wide problem.

These routes are not levels of a guaranteed recovery program. Incident eligibility, verification and affected-player scope differ from one event to another.
What to do after an apparent loss
When only your account appears affected
- Stop trading, dropping or dismantling related items while you investigate.
- Check inventory, bank tabs and Diango before assuming deletion.
- Secure the account if unauthorized access is possible, but do not expect security changes to restore items.
- Keep dates, character name, world, approximate activity and screenshots for your own records. They may help explain the event, although Jagex’s policy does not promise an individual restoration based on those details.
- Do not rely on the RuneScape 48-hour form or on a request for an individual rollback.
When many players report the same problem
- Check official Jagex news and service communications for confirmation.
- Read the stated eligibility and make-good instructions exactly; do not assume every player or item category is included.
- Wait for the announced automatic process where Jagex says affected accounts will be identified automatically.
- Keep your account available and secure while the incident is investigated. Avoid creating duplicate claims that the announcement does not request.
Security steps that reduce future losses
Account security cannot reverse a completed trade, death or deletion, but it can reduce the chance that someone else accesses the account. Jagex recommends using a unique password for every online account and considering a reputable password manager. Scan devices regularly with antivirus and anti-spyware tools because keyloggers and remote-access malware can capture credentials or control an active session.
Also secure the email account associated with Jagex, review linked logins and end active sessions you do not recognize. Jagex’s authenticator guidance provides 10 backup codes; those codes are for regaining access to the authentication system, not copies of OSRS character data and not item-restoration tokens. Store them securely and do not publish them.
Common misconceptions
- “I can restore yesterday’s character from a backup.” Jagex has not documented a player-facing snapshot or restore control.
- “A support agent can roll back just my account.” The rollback policy explicitly says individual account rollbacks are unavailable.
- “The 48-hour form works for every Jagex game.” That process is labeled for RuneScape accounts only.
- “OSRS is a backup copy of my RuneScape character.” The games have independent profiles, stats and items.
- “Changing my password will bring back stolen items.” Security action prevents further access; it is not an item restore.
- “A backup code is a character backup.” Authenticator backup codes only help with account authentication.
What is and is not publicly documented
Jagex publicly describes the support boundaries and selected incident responses, but not the underlying backup architecture. There is no published figure in the reviewed guidance for OSRS backup frequency, retention, restore success rates or item-loss incidence. Treat claims about automatic daily snapshots, a fixed retention window or guaranteed restoration as speculation unless Jagex formally documents them.
For an individual loss, the reliable path is therefore limited: verify the item’s location, use Diango where applicable, secure the account, and monitor official incident announcements. A qualifying Jagex-confirmed incident may trigger an automatic return, but ordinary personal losses do not create a general OSRS recovery claim.
