Update a local listing as soon as a verified business fact changes. That includes your name, address or service area, phone number, website, operating status, regular hours, and holiday or event hours. Google, Apple, Bing, and Yelp do not require a universal weekly or monthly schedule in the guidance reviewed.
For a stable business, use a quarterly audit as a practical backstop, not as a platform rule. Add checks before holiday periods and after operational changes. Seasonal businesses, multi-location operators, and companies that change hours or services often should review their listings more frequently.
Start with the event, not the calendar
A calendar reminder cannot replace an update triggered by a real-world change. If your phone number changes on Monday, waiting for a quarterly review leaves customers with incorrect information for up to three months. Assign responsibility for updating listings as part of the change itself.

- Business name or public-facing trading name
- Street address, suite number, or service area
- Primary phone number
- Website URL
- Permanent closure, reopening, or a change from storefront to service-area operation
- Regular customer-facing opening hours
- Holiday, event, temporary-closure, or other special hours
- Services or locations that materially change what customers can expect
Confirm the new fact internally first, then update the website and every major listing you control. Google says a profile should represent the business as it is represented in the real world, use a precise address or service area, and provide regular customer-facing hours. Bing similarly recommends consistent, current core details across online channels.

Use a practical cadence for routine checks
Routine audits catch errors that do not generate a formal change request, such as a listing that still shows last year’s holiday schedule or a phone number that was changed in one directory but not another. A quarterly review is a reasonable default for a stable small business. It is an editorial workflow recommendation, not a frequency imposed by any listing platform.

Keep the quarterly date on an internal calendar, but do not wait for it when a verified change occurs. The audit is a safety net for omissions, not permission to leave known errors online.

Google specifically distinguishes regular hours from special hours for particular days, holidays, or events. Seasonal businesses can set the hours for the season in which they are open and use special hours for holidays, temporary closures, or events.
How the major listing platforms handle updates
The platforms manage similar customer-facing facts, but their review and publication processes differ. A processing estimate on one service is not a direct comparison with an evaluation estimate on another.

Google and Apple guidance reviewed here emphasizes accuracy and current information but does not specify a weekly, monthly, or quarterly routine. Treat the quarterly interval in this article as an internal control chosen for convenience.

A step-by-step update workflow
- Verify the underlying fact. Confirm the change with the person who owns the source of truth: for example, the lease or facilities record for an address, the phone administrator for a number, or the operations manager for hours.
- Record an effective date. Note when the new information becomes true and whether it is permanent, seasonal, or limited to specific dates.
- Update your own website first. Make the location page, contact page, booking flow, and any structured business details agree with the new fact. This gives platforms a reliable reference when they evaluate an edit.
- Update the profiles you control. Apply the same spelling, address format, phone number, URL, and hours to Google Business Profile, Apple Business, Bing Places, Yelp, and other important directories used by your customers.
- Enter exceptions separately. Use special-hours controls for holidays, events, and temporary closures instead of overwriting permanent hours with a one-day schedule.
- Submit once, then document it. Record the platform, fields changed, submission date, effective date, and any confirmation number or screenshot. Avoid making repeated edits simply because the public view has not changed yet.
- Verify the public result. Check the listing while signed out or in a private browser window, and test the phone link, map pin, website link, and displayed hours. For a multi-location business, verify several locations rather than assuming a bulk edit applied everywhere.
Plan for holidays, seasons, and temporary closures
Special dates deserve their own schedule because customers often search immediately before visiting. Start early enough to accommodate platform review. Bing’s stated 7–12-day processing window is a reason to enter holiday changes well before the holiday, while Google supports special hours directly. After the date passes, remove or replace obsolete exceptions so the listing returns to the correct regular schedule.
Seasonal opening and closing
Before a seasonal reopening, confirm the status, regular hours, address or service area, phone, and website together. If the business closes for a season, use the platform’s appropriate temporary or seasonal status rather than leaving ordinary hours visible. Recheck the live listing when the season starts; a successful submission in an owner dashboard is not proof that every customer-facing surface has refreshed.
One-off closures
For weather, maintenance, or an event, publish the exception as soon as it is confirmed. Keep the permanent schedule intact unless the operating model has actually changed. If the closure affects reservations or deliveries, update those systems and the website at the same time.

What to do when an update does not appear
Allow the platform’s stated window
Do not treat a delay as evidence that the submission failed. Bing describes 7–12 calendar days to process many updates, with additional time before search displays all details. Yelp describes a typical 24–48-hour evaluation period for suggested information edits. These figures describe different stages, so they should not be used to rank one platform as faster than another.
Stop making conflicting edits
Bing warns that frequent changes while a listing is processing may delay publishing. Keep one authoritative version of the fact, wait through the relevant processing period, and then inspect the live result. Multiple submissions with different hours or addresses can create a longer review trail.

If the public listing remains wrong after the applicable period, compare it with your website and internal record, capture the incorrect display, and contact the platform’s support channel. On Apple, organization users can review, accept, or contest certain Apple-suggested changes in Apple Business. For any service, provide the exact field, effective date, and supporting business information rather than submitting the same edit repeatedly.

Controls that keep multiple locations aligned
Centralize the approved name, address, phone, website, status, regular hours, and special-hours calendar in one location record per branch. Give each field an owner and an effective date. When a location changes, use a single change ticket or checklist to trigger website, listing, signage, booking, and customer-service updates.
- Use one canonical format for street addresses and phone numbers.
- Keep location-specific hours separate from corporate or appointment-only hours.
- Mark temporary values with an end date so they are removed after the event.
- Have a second person review holiday and relocation changes before submission.
- Track unresolved platform edits and the date when each should be rechecked.
This process matters more as the number of locations grows: a quarterly audit may be sufficient for a stable single location, but it should not be the only control for a network with frequent operational changes.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Waiting for a scheduled audit after a known change: the listing is already inaccurate, so update it immediately.
- Changing only one platform: customers may find conflicting hours in search, maps, and directories.
- Putting keywords in the business name: Google says the name should reflect the real-world name, not promotional wording.
- Overwriting regular hours for a holiday: use special hours so the normal schedule survives the exception.
- Assuming a dashboard save equals publication: verify the public listing after processing.
- Resubmitting every day: repeated edits can prolong processing, particularly while Bing is reviewing a change.
- Failing to remove old exceptions: a past closure or holiday entry can continue to mislead customers.
A concise operating checklist
