For most people, there is no need to run manual malware scans on a frequent schedule. Keep your security software up to date and its real-time protection enabled; it handles routine monitoring automatically. Run a manual full scan if you have a specific reason to suspect malware, or occasionally if the check gives you peace of mind. A monthly scan is an option, not a requirement.
What routine protection does for you
Security software typically runs scheduled scans automatically, and real-time protection checks activity such as downloads and newly installed software. The exact features and schedule depend on the security package and its settings, so confirm that protection is active rather than assuming a manual scan is your main safeguard.
For Windows, check the security status in Windows Security. The Ask Leo! article uses Windows Defender as its example and describes it as included with Windows 10 and Windows 11; product names and menus can change over time. Its general advice is that properly configured security software makes frequent manual scans unnecessary.

When to run a manual scan
If you suspect an infection
Run a full scan when something gives you a concrete reason for concern, such as suspicious activity or a security alert. A full scan takes longer than a quick scan, but it checks more broadly. In the configuration described by Ask Leo!, the full scan covers fixed internal drives; external removable drives and network-connected drives are not included. Scan those separately if they are relevant to your concern.

If you want an occasional reassurance check
You can run a full scan now and then even without a specific warning. Ask Leo! author Leo A. Notenboom suggests “once a month or so” as an optional interval, while noting that he rarely, if ever, does so himself. Treat that as a personal preference, not a security rule or a substitute for active protection.
What to do if a scan is clean but concern remains
A clean result does not prove that a computer is free of malware: a scanner can miss something. First make sure your primary security package is active and up to date. If you still have a concrete reason to suspect an infection, you can seek a second-opinion scan with a separate tool. Ask Leo! mentions Malwarebytes as one example, but an additional scan is not a guarantee of detection or removal.

Be careful about installing another full security package. Ask Leo! cautions that a second package can turn off Windows Defender and that multiple active real-time protection packages can conflict. Check which product is providing real-time protection before and after installing another scanner, and avoid leaving yourself without active protection.
A simple decision guide
- No warning or reason for concern: Keep automatic and real-time protection enabled; no scheduled manual full scan is necessary for most people.
- Specific suspicion or alert: Run a full scan and check whether the drives you are concerned about are included.
- Clean scan but suspicion persists: Consider a second-opinion scan, while recognizing that no single clean scan proves the absence of malware.
- You prefer a recurring check: A monthly full scan is reasonable as a preference, not a required interval.
