Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
For most Minecraft servers, start with one restart during the quietest part of each night. Heavily loaded or heavily modded Java servers may need a 6- to 12-hour schedule, but a restart should be a controlled maintenance measure—not a substitute for finding a CPU bottleneck, memory leak, overloaded plugin, or expensive world build.
There is no official restart interval
Mojang, Microsoft, and PaperMC do not publish a universal rule such as “restart every day” or “restart every six hours.” The interval is an operational choice based on your server software, player activity, workload, and observed failures. Hosting providers and server administrators commonly choose a timed schedule because it is predictable, but that practice is not an official Minecraft requirement.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A restart stops the server process and starts it again from a clean state. That can temporarily remove accumulated process state and recover from a condition that disappears after a fresh launch. It does not make a slow CPU faster, reduce the work performed by a costly plugin, or optimize a complicated redstone machine. If the same workload recreates the problem, the lag will return.
A practical starting schedule
Use the schedule below as a decision framework, not as a promise that every server needs the same cadence.

| Server situation | Starting cadence | Why this may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Small or moderate vanilla/Paper server with no recurring crashes | One restart per night during off-peak hours | A predictable maintenance window limits disruption while giving you a clean process once per day. |
| Busy Java server or a modded instance whose lag returns within a day | Every 6 to 12 hours, only after monitoring and diagnosis | More frequent recycling can be a temporary containment measure while you investigate the underlying workload. |
| Server with out-of-memory crashes, very long garbage-collection pauses, or a repeatable failure | Event-driven restart as soon as it is safe, plus corrective work | The symptom is a failure condition rather than an arbitrary clock interval. |
| Bedrock Dedicated Server after configuration or plugin changes | Restart when the change is made | Bedrock cannot fully apply those changes through /reload. |
One community recommendation gives a 4 a.m. restart with a player warning. Treat that hour as an example of an off-peak window, not a globally correct time: your players may be in a different region or your host may perform maintenance then. Choose the period with the fewest active players and enough time to save worlds, stop cleanly, and verify that the process returns.
When a daily restart is sensible
Stable servers that need predictable maintenance
A nightly restart is a reasonable baseline when the server remains responsive through the day, has no out-of-memory events, and its garbage-collection behavior is normal. Publish the window in your server rules or community channel, then send a short in-game warning before stopping. A consistent time is easier for players to understand than an unexplained interruption.

Servers that accumulate a temporary condition
If performance degrades gradually and a fresh launch restores it for a while, a timed restart can reduce the impact while you collect evidence. Record the time of each restart, online player count, recent world or plugin changes, and the lag symptoms. A temporary improvement is evidence that process state may be involved; it is not proof that restarting solved the root cause.
When a 6- to 12-hour schedule may be justified
Heavier Java servers—particularly modded installations—are sometimes restarted every 6 to 12 hours. Move to that cadence only when your monitoring shows that the server reliably becomes unhealthy before the nightly window and you cannot yet remove the cause. More restarts also mean more player interruptions and more opportunities for an unsafe shutdown, so the shorter interval should be treated as containment with an investigation deadline.

A hosting-provider recommendation summarized for older Java versions advises at least every 12 hours for version 1.7.10 or lower and every 6 hours for 1.8 or newer. This is a provider’s version-based guidance reported in a search-result summary, not a verified Mojang or PaperMC rule. Java version, modpack, view distance, entity count, and plugin behavior can matter more than the version number alone; measure your own instance before adopting those intervals.
Do not restart just because the memory graph is high
How Paper’s heap graph behaves
PaperMC’s troubleshooting documentation explains that Java heap usage commonly has a sawtooth pattern: allocations rise, garbage collection removes some objects, and usage rises again. The Java virtual machine also rarely returns all allocated memory to the operating system. Consequently, a monitoring panel that stays near a high level is not, by itself, evidence that the server needs a restart.
Actual memory-related triggers
Restart for an out-of-memory crash, or when garbage-collection (GC) times become bad enough to interrupt ticks and player actions. Capture the log around the event and note when pauses begin. If restarting merely resets the graph and the same GC behavior returns, investigate heap sizing, object retention, plugins, and mods instead of shortening the timer indefinitely. A user-reported bug describes continuous GC that was helped only temporarily by restarting and suspected a plugin leak; that is anecdotal evidence, not an official diagnosis.
What restarting cannot fix
- CPU saturation: A restart does not add processor capacity. If the main server thread cannot complete its tick work in time, the same workload will miss ticks after the next launch.
- Expensive plugins or mods: A plugin that scans many chunks, performs synchronous database work, or leaks objects will resume its behavior after every restart.
- Costly world activity: Large redstone systems, dense entities, rapid chunk generation, and heavily loaded farms can continue consuming the same CPU and memory resources.
- Incorrect configuration: A restart applies a setting only if the setting is valid and the process reads it at startup; it does not decide which value is appropriate.
Use restarts to protect availability while you identify these causes. Do not advertise a shorter interval as a performance fix when the evidence points to a resource shortage.

Measure the cause before changing the timer
Check TPS and MSPT
Track server ticks per second (TPS) and milliseconds per tick (MSPT) during normal play and during a lag episode. A falling TPS or rising MSPT tells you that tick work is taking too long; compare those readings with player count, entity totals, chunk activity, and recent administrative changes. Keep a dated record so you can tell whether a restart changes the duration of the problem or only postpones it.
Inspect logs for “Can’t keep up!” warnings
Repeated “Can’t keep up!” messages are a useful signal that the server is not completing work on schedule. Correlate the first warning with the time of a world event, plugin task, mod action, or resource spike. A single warning during startup is different from a stream of warnings while players are active; make the distinction in your notes before selecting a schedule.
Profile with spark
The spark profiler can show which tasks consume tick time. Run a profile during the slowdown, save the result, and compare it with a profile taken when the server is healthy. Use the profile to decide whether to remove or reconfigure a plugin, limit a mod feature, reduce a costly build, or move to stronger hardware. If the profiler identifies a repeatable task, a restart interval is only a stopgap.
Java/Paper and Bedrock are not interchangeable
| Question | Java with Paper | Bedrock Dedicated Server |
|---|---|---|
| Is a high memory meter alone a restart reason? | No. Paper documentation points to out-of-memory crashes or bad GC times as meaningful triggers. | Bedrock has no startup or maximum-memory values to tune, so memory troubleshooting follows different constraints. |
| Can a reload apply every change? | Restart requirements depend on the plugin or setting; verify its documentation and logs. | /reload cannot fully reload the server. Configuration or plugin changes require a restart. |
| How do you stop it cleanly? | Use the server’s normal stop mechanism and wait for the save to complete before launching again. | Microsoft Learn’s getting-started guidance describes stopping with the console stop command and restarting by running the executable again. |
| Is there an official interval? | No fixed PaperMC interval was found. | No Bedrock-specific interval was found. |
Because Bedrock lacks Java-style memory tuning controls, do not copy a Java heap-management plan to a Bedrock installation. Base Bedrock restarts on clean shutdowns, required configuration changes, and observed failures rather than on a Java GC schedule.

How to build a safe restart routine
- Choose the quiet window. Examine peak player times and select the lowest-impact period. A community guide’s 4 a.m. example is useful only if it matches your audience and hosting region.
- Announce the maintenance. Send a short warning in-game and through the channel your players actually monitor. State that the server will stop, the expected interruption, and where to report a failed return.
- Stop cleanly. Use the console stop command or your host’s graceful-stop control. Do not kill the process while it is saving unless it has already stopped responding and you have accepted the recovery risk.
- Wait for confirmation. Confirm that the world-save messages finish and the process exits. On Bedrock, Microsoft Learn documents the console
stopcommand; restart by running the server executable again. - Verify the launch. Check the console for startup errors, confirm that the expected world and configuration loaded, and connect with an administrator account before removing the maintenance notice.
- Record the result. Log the start and end times, player impact, warnings, TPS/MSPT, and whether the symptom returned. This record determines whether the next interval should remain nightly or be changed.
Choosing between timed and event-driven restarts
Timed restarts
A timed plan is appropriate when you value predictability or when a server has a known, temporary degradation pattern. It gives players one announced interruption instead of an unexpected crash. Keep the timer conservative: if the server is healthy, increasing the frequency provides no demonstrated benefit and adds downtime.
Event-driven restarts
An event-driven plan restarts after a crash, an out-of-memory event, unacceptable GC pauses, or a required configuration change. It is preferable when the server is stable for long periods and a daily interruption would add inconvenience without solving a recurring symptom. Automation should still include a graceful stop, a startup check, and an alert if the process exits again.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Common mistakes and recovery paths
Restarting after every lag complaint
Collect TPS/MSPT and log evidence before stopping the server. If the metrics recover only briefly, leave the cadence unchanged and profile the workload. Repeated emergency restarts can hide a plugin regression or hardware limit until it becomes a crash.
Shortening the interval without warning players
Unexpected stops erode trust and can interrupt builds or trading. Publish the maintenance window, keep a short warning, and move the window if it conflicts with the community’s active hours.

Assuming a flat memory graph means a leak
Paper’s documented heap behavior makes that conclusion unsafe. Look for out-of-memory events, GC timing, and a repeatable rise in lag. Escalate to a heap or plugin investigation when those signals agree.
Using reload as a substitute on Bedrock
Bedrock’s /reload does not fully reload the server. After configuration or plugin changes, stop and start the executable cleanly, then inspect startup output to ensure the change took effect.

Start with one off-peak nightly restart and a short player warning. For the next week, capture the same metrics at comparable times: TPS, MSPT, GC behavior where available, “Can’t keep up!” warnings, player count, and notable world or plugin activity. If the server remains healthy, keep the schedule. If lag returns before the next window, profile during the episode and fix the identified workload. Only when no specific cause is found and the pattern is repeatable should you test a 6- to 12-hour cadence, documenting the extra interruption and reviewing the result after another observation period.
No published statistic establishes how often Minecraft servers restart or how much a restart improves lag. Treat the schedule as an operational experiment measured against your own logs, not as a universal performance number.
