Clean a wet floor cleaner after every use. Empty and rinse the dirty-water tank, remove hair and debris from the brush bar and its chamber, and run the manufacturer’s clean-out cycle when the machine provides one. Washable filters and brush parts must dry completely before they go back in the cleaner; some models specify 24 hours. Replacement intervals are model-specific, so use your machine’s manual and compatible-parts list rather than applying a universal calendar.

The practical cleaning schedule

“After every use” is the safest baseline because wet debris, dirty water and hair can harden or create odors while the machine sits. The exact parts you remove, the washing method and the dock sequence depend on the model.

Part or task When to do it What the manufacturer guidance establishes
Dirty-water tank After every cleaning session Empty it after the clean-out process, then rinse or wash it as the model instructions direct.
Brush bar, cover and chamber Inspect after every session; remove debris each time Hair and residue should be cleared from the roll, window and chamber. Wash removable pieces only when the manual allows it.
Filter and screen Inspect routinely and clean when soiled or when the manual schedules it Some CrossWave instructions call for hand-washing in warm water. Reinstall only after complete drying.
Dock and clean-out cycle After each use when the machine includes the function Run the powered cycle as specified, then perform the required manual steps, including tank emptying and wiping residual water.
Filter and brush-roll replacement Use the model’s stated interval, or replace sooner if damaged or ineffective Bissell lists three months or as needed for certain named CrossWave models; that is not a category-wide rule.

What to do immediately after each use

  1. Finish the cleaning pass and park the machine safely. Keep the cleaner near its plugged-in dock if a clean-out cycle requires dock power. Follow the model’s instruction for whether the clean tank must contain formula or water.
  2. Run the clean-out cycle if provided. The cycle flushes internal pathways and the brush area, but it does not eliminate the need to remove parts, empty the dirty tank or wipe the machine.
  3. Remove the brush bar and cover when instructed. Pull out hair, threads and larger debris from the roll, cover, window and chamber. Do not force a latch or tab that your manual does not identify as removable.
  4. Empty the dirty-water tank. Rinse the tank and any approved components, checking the float and screen for trapped lint or sludge. Leave the tank open so residual moisture can evaporate.
  5. Wipe standing water from the body and dock area. A clean-out cycle can leave droplets around the roller housing. Use the method specified for your model and keep electrical contacts and charging areas free of pooled water.
  6. Dry washable parts completely. Set the filter, brush roll and other approved parts where air can reach all surfaces. Do not reassemble simply because the outside feels dry.

The order matters. A powered dock cycle is designed to precede the manual removal and drying steps on some machines, while other models use a different sequence.

Filter care: cleaning, drying and replacement

How often to wash the filter

Inspect the filter whenever you service the machine. Wash it when it is visibly dirty or when the model’s maintenance instructions call for routine hand-washing. Warm water is specified for the CrossWave Cordless Max filter, screen and float indicators. Do not use detergent, a dishwasher or compressed air unless your manual explicitly approves that method.

Why complete drying is non-negotiable

Moisture left in a filter can restrict airflow and reduce suction. Bissell’s cited Cordless Max guidance specifies 24 hours of drying, and its CrossWave Edge instructions say to leave the parts out for 24 hours or until completely dry before reassembly. Treat the longer requirement as the minimum when your model gives a time and a condition.

Keep a spare, model-compatible filter if you need to clean the machine again before the washed one is dry. Never operate the cleaner with a filter that the manual requires to be installed but is still damp.

Replace a filter if it remains clogged after washing, is torn, distorted or causes persistent airflow problems when correctly installed and dry. For the CrossWave models that specify it, Bissell’s replacement guidance is every three months or as needed. Confirm the exact model number before ordering: parts marketed for one CrossWave are not automatically compatible with every other version.

Brush bar and brush chamber maintenance

Remove debris after every session

Hair and fibers wrap around the roll and can pack into the end caps or chamber. Pull them free before they harden. Clean the brush window and surrounding channel as well as the roller itself; residue hidden behind the cover can continue to smell and interfere with rotation.

Wash only removable, approved parts

Some brush rolls can be rinsed, while the machine body and motorized assemblies must only be wiped. Use the removal tab, latch or release described for your exact model. Let a washed roll dry fully before fitting it back, even when the manual does not print a specific number of hours.

Check that the roll spins freely

After cleaning and drying, turn the roll by hand before reinstalling it. A roll that binds, wobbles, has damaged bristles or still will not rotate freely may need replacement rather than more washing. Persistent resistance can also indicate debris in the chamber or an obstruction in the drive area.

Dock and clean-out cycle: what it does and does not do

The dock automates rinsing and internal flushing on supported models, but it is not a substitute for hands-on maintenance. The CrossWave HF3 procedure illustrates the distinction:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Place the machine on its plugged-in docking station.
  2. Make sure the clean tank contains the required formula and the dirty tank is empty.
  3. Start the clean-out cycle.
  4. When the cycle ends, remove the brush-roll cover. Bissell’s support wording begins, “Once clean out cycle is finished > Remove brush roll cover,” then directs the user to pull the brush tab.
  5. Take out the brush roll, wipe excess water from the machine, return the cleaner to the dock and empty the dirty tank.

Other models may omit a step, use a different tank condition or require a different button sequence. If the dock reports an error, check that the machine is seated correctly, the dock is powered and the tanks and cover are installed as required before restarting the cycle.

Model-specific examples from Bissell instructions

Model example Documented care sequence Drying or replacement detail
CrossWave HF3 Use the plugged-in dock clean-out cycle with the clean tank prepared and dirty tank empty; then remove the brush roll, wipe excess water, return the machine to the dock and empty the dirty tank. Follow the model manual for washing and drying removable parts.
CrossWave Cordless Max Routinely hand-wash the filter, screen and float indicators in warm water; clean the brush roll and brush window as part of general maintenance. Allow the filter components 24 hours to dry before use.
CrossWave Edge Empty and rinse the dirty tank, clean the filter with warm water, and wash the brush roll and window as instructed. Leave parts out for 24 hours or until completely dry. Bissell lists brush-roll and filter replacement every three months or as needed for this model.
CrossWave OmniForce Edge Use its clean-out cycle and perform the routine brush maintenance described in the care instructions. Bissell warns that a wet filter can affect suction and gives the three-month-or-as-needed filter replacement recommendation.

These examples show why one brand-level rule is unreliable. Before removing a component, verify the exact model name, the release mechanism, whether the part is washable, the required drying time and the correct replacement number.

Signs that your schedule is too infrequent

  • Reduced suction: inspect the filter, float, screen and air path; a damp or clogged filter is a common maintenance cause.
  • The brush bar stops or sounds strained: switch off the machine, remove wrapped hair and check the chamber and end caps. If the roll still does not spin freely, replace it if the manual identifies it as a service part.
  • Dirty-water or musty odor: empty the tank, rinse approved parts and allow the tank, filter and brush roll to dry separately.
  • Water left on the floor: verify that the dirty tank, filter, cover and brush roll are seated correctly and that no seal is blocked by debris.
  • Dock cycle will not start: confirm power, seating, tank levels and cover position, then consult the model’s error guidance rather than repeatedly forcing the cycle.

Adjusting care for your household

Keep the after-use baseline even if you run the cleaner only briefly. You may need additional attention during heavy shedding, renovation dust, sticky spills or repeated sessions in one day: inspect the roll and filter between sessions and clear buildup before it reaches the motor path. Conversely, a lightly used machine still needs its dirty tank emptied after each run; storing dirty water for a later session encourages odor and residue.

Replacement timing should follow condition as well as the calendar. A filter that is damaged or permanently restricted, or a brush roll with worn or distorted bristles, warrants earlier replacement. A clean, intact part should not be discarded solely because another model uses a different interval.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Safe storage between sessions

  • Store the cleaner upright in the dock or position specified by the manufacturer.
  • Leave the dirty tank, brush roll and filter exposed to air while they finish drying, if the manual permits.
  • Do not seal damp components in a closed compartment.
  • Keep formula and rinse solutions at the concentrations stated for the machine; stronger mixtures can leave residue or damage components.
  • Disconnect power before reaching into the brush chamber or removing a jam.

A simple decision rule

Use this sequence whenever you finish a wet-floor cleaning job: clean out the machine, empty the dirty tank, clear the brush area, wash only approved parts, dry them completely, then inspect before the next use. For replacement parts or an unfamiliar dock cycle, the exact model manual takes precedence over any generic schedule. That approach gives you the frequent care that wet debris requires without treating a three-month recommendation for selected models as a universal rule.
