There is no universal refresh schedule for satellite imagery in consumer map apps. A satellite’s revisit interval only says how often it can observe a place; the map provider must still select, process and publish a replacement image. Google says it tries to update imagery of large cities every year, but that is an effort rather than a guaranteed timetable for every location.
Blurry or apparently old imagery can result from the source, spatial resolution, capture platform, date labeling and mosaic processing. A map tile may combine photographs from different days or months, so the date shown is not always the capture date for every pixel.
Satellite collection and map updates are different clocks
When people ask how often satellite images are updated, they usually mean how often the picture in Google Maps or another consumer map changes. That is a publication schedule, not the same thing as a satellite’s ability to pass over the area.

A satellite system has an orbital pattern that determines how frequently it can observe a location. Copernicus documentation lists a ten-day revisit frequency for each individual Sentinel-2 satellite and a five-day revisit for the combined Sentinel-2 constellation. Those figures describe opportunities to collect data. They do not promise a cloud-free observation, a particular image quality, or a new consumer-map tile.

Acquisition, processing and publication
After a sensor records an observation, an imagery provider has to select suitable data, process it and make it available in a particular product. A map company then decides which source to license or ingest, how to assemble tiles and when to replace what users see. New observations can therefore exist while the public basemap remains unchanged.
Why there is no single worldwide timetable
Different places receive different priorities. A provider may refresh a rapidly changing city more often than a rural area, while a map layer built from aerial photographs follows an entirely different collection plan. The product, country, source and coverage conditions all matter. Treat any advertised cadence as applying only to the named system or service, not to every satellite view.

The Sentinel-2 and HLS numbers are useful for understanding public Earth-observation data, but they are not service-level promises for the satellite layer in a mapping app. A map provider may use different satellites, aircraft or a mixture of sources.

Why a satellite image can look older than expected
The displayed view may be a mosaic
Google explains that imagery comes from different providers and platforms and is not real time. A single view can be assembled from satellite or aerial photographs collected over several days or months. Roads, roofs and fields in adjacent parts of the screen may therefore come from different acquisitions even though they appear in one seamless image.
A date range is not one capture date
Google Earth can show a date range for a mosaic. When a range is displayed, Google says the date shown is the oldest possible date in that range. That label should be read as the earliest date represented by the possible captures, not as proof that every pixel was photographed on that day. A newer-looking feature beside an older-looking feature can be a consequence of the mosaic rather than an error in the date.
New collections may not replace the basemap
Satellites can continue collecting observations while a consumer product keeps serving an older image. Publication involves source selection, processing and tile replacement, and the provider may not publish every available capture. A location can consequently have recent scientific data without a visibly newer image in the map app.

“Old” is relative to the feature you are checking
For a building project, a property boundary or a newly built road, even a several-month difference can matter. For a stable landscape, the same image may remain useful for years. The date label tells you about the imagery, not whether the map is suitable for a particular legal, engineering or safety decision.

Spatial resolution controls visible detail
Spatial resolution describes the ground area represented by each pixel. Larger pixels preserve broad patterns but cannot show fine features distinctly. The HLS product’s 30-metre resolution and roughly 1.4-day average observation cadence illustrate the trade-off: frequent measurements are valuable for monitoring vegetation, water and land change, yet they are not intended to identify individual cars or resolve small roof details.
Frequent observations do not imply sharp imagery
Revisit frequency answers “how often can another observation be made?” Resolution answers “how much ground detail is represented?” A system can be excellent on one axis and limited on the other. Comparing a frequent, moderate-resolution scientific layer with a less frequently refreshed, higher-resolution commercial or aerial layer can make the first appear blurry even when it is newer.

Source and platform differences matter
Google describes imagery from both satellite and aircraft providers. Different sensors, flight or orbital platforms, processing pipelines and mosaicking methods can produce visibly different sharpness. One neighborhood may switch between sources at a seam, creating a change in clarity that is unrelated to the age of the image.
Do not diagnose a blurry tile from appearance alone
Blur by itself does not establish one cause. Without examining the specific layer’s provider, capture date, resolution and processing, it is not reliable to attribute softness to cloud cover, compression, privacy masking or any other single explanation. Those factors can vary by product and location, while the visible symptom is the same.

How to check the age and freshness of a map image
- Open the imagery-date information. In Google Earth, inspect the imagery date shown for the location. Record whether it is a single date or a range.
- Interpret a range correctly. A range indicates that the displayed mosaic may contain captures from multiple dates. The displayed date is the oldest possible date for that range, not a universal capture date for the entire view.
- Check for a source or layer change. Compare the sharpness, color and seams across the area. A sudden visual change can indicate that adjacent tiles came from different sources or acquisitions.
- Use a date-filtered public dataset when the exact observation matters. Scientific portals can let you select a date and inspect the underlying scene rather than relying on a consumer basemap label.
- Consult the USGS Satellite Collection Calendar for collection opportunities. The calendar provides historical and predicted collection dates for Sentinel-2A, Sentinel-2B, Sentinel-2C, Landsat-8 and Landsat-9 based on recent collection patterns.
- Separate collection from publication. A predicted or historical collection date in the USGS calendar does not predict when a consumer map will refresh. It only describes when the satellite system collected, or is expected to collect, data.
How to compare two images without drawing the wrong conclusion
When two views disagree, compare the same attributes rather than judging only by apparent age or sharpness.

Common situations and the right interpretation
“My city changed, but the satellite layer did not.”
The city may have changed after the last image selected for that map layer. Even Google’s annual-update statement is an effort for large cities, not a promise that every neighborhood will be replaced each year. Check the imagery date and use a date-filtered public dataset if you need a more recent observation.
“The date says one day, but the scene looks inconsistent.”
Look for a date range. A mosaic can combine acquisitions over days or months, and Google displays the oldest possible date when a range applies. Inconsistent construction stages or vegetation can therefore appear in one labeled view.
“Zooming in makes the image fuzzy.”
Zoom enlarges pixels; it does not increase the source resolution. Verify the layer and its spatial resolution before assuming that a newer image is available. A frequent-observation product can still be too coarse for close-up inspection.
“Another map has a sharper image of the same place.”
The other service may use a different provider, aircraft capture, sensor or processing method. Compare dates, source and resolution before deciding which image is newer or more accurate.
What to expect from future updates
There is no universal countdown for the next satellite-image refresh. The most defensible expectation is conditional: a satellite may observe the area according to its revisit pattern, but the map layer changes only if its provider obtains suitable imagery, processes it and publishes a replacement. Large cities may receive priority attention, while other locations can wait longer.
For time-sensitive work, treat a consumer basemap as a convenient visual reference rather than a guaranteed current record. Verify the date, identify whether the view is a mosaic, compare the source and resolution, and use a date-controlled Earth-observation product when the observation itself—not merely the map display—is important.
