Octopuses solve problems by combining visual discrimination with information gathered through their arms and suckers, then changing their behavior when a task changes. Controlled experiments show learning, sensory transfer, and flexible performance. They do not, however, establish that octopuses reason about problems in the same way people do.

The clearest evidence comes from experiments in which an octopus must discriminate objects, learn a food route, or adapt when the route is altered. Those results are stronger than anecdotes, but they remain specific to the species, individuals, and task tested.

How do octopuses solve problems?

In animal-cognition research, “problem solving” is best treated as an observable outcome: an animal encounters a task, gathers information, selects an action, and changes that action when the conditions change. That definition avoids assuming a hidden human-like plan or explanation.

  1. Sampling the situation. The eyes detect shape, contrast, movement, and polarization patterns, while the arms contact surfaces and collect mechanical and chemical information.
  2. Discriminating relevant cues. The animal learns which opening, object, surface, or route is associated with food or another outcome.
  3. Acting and receiving feedback. Pulling, pushing, probing, or changing body position produces information about whether the chosen action works.
  4. Adjusting when the task changes. A changed orientation, barrier, or access point can lead to a different sequence of movements.

That sequence demonstrates flexible behavior when it is shown under controlled conditions. It does not by itself show that the octopus formed a detailed mental model, imagined a future state, or used causal reasoning.

The best direct test: an octopus puzzle with changing rules

Richter and colleagues tested seven wild-caught common octopuses (Octopus vulgaris) in a multi-stage food-retrieval task. The animals first learned to open an L-shaped container to obtain food. Later stages required them to retrieve the food through a close-fitting opening while the container’s orientation changed, an opaque barrier blocked part of the route, or the orientation was randomized. Every octopus reached the researchers’ performance criterion at each stage, although performance changed as the conditions changed. The primary study is available in Animal Cognition via PubMed Central.

Stage or manipulation What changed What the result establishes
Initial L-shaped container The animals learned to open the container for food. They could acquire the action sequence used in this apparatus.
Changed orientation The same basic puzzle was presented in a different orientation. Performance was not tied to one unchanging physical position.
Close-fitting access The food had to be retrieved through a restricted opening. The octopuses adjusted their movements to the access constraint.
Opaque barrier Part of the route was hidden from direct view. They continued to complete the task under altered visual access.
Randomized orientation The orientation was varied rather than held constant. They still reached criterion, while execution changed across conditions.

Richter and colleagues wrote that “Our findings indicate that octopuses show behavioral flexibility by quickly adapting to a change in a task.” That is a measured conclusion: the animals adapted in the tested puzzle. The authors also left open whether the behavior reflected trial-and-error, a generalized strategy, a mental representation, or some combination. The sample was seven animals of one species, so the finding should not be treated as a universal description of every octopus.

What senses give octopuses the information they need?

Vision: shape, contrast, and polarization

Vision supports discrimination of objects and targets. In a 1996 experiment, octopuses were trained to distinguish targets using polarization contrast. They transferred the discrimination to new situations, leading the authors to propose that polarization vision could help with object detection and recognition. The result does not mean polarization vision is functionally identical to human color vision; it shows that polarization contrast can be a usable visual cue for an octopus. The study is reported in Shashar and Cronin’s 1996 Journal of Experimental Biology paper.

Transfer matters here. An animal that responds only to one memorized training stimulus has demonstrated discrimination in that setup. Responding appropriately to a new arrangement suggests that the relevant visual relationship, rather than one exact picture, influenced behavior. Even so, the experiment does not identify the animal’s subjective experience or prove a human-like concept of polarization.

Arms and suckers: touch plus contact chemosensation

Octopus arms are not merely levers controlled by the brain. Suckers contain distinct sensory cell populations that respond to mechanical and chemical cues. A 2020 study described this as contact-dependent chemosensation: an arm can sample a surface and detect prey-associated chemicals while touching it. “Taste by touch” is a useful shorthand only when it is defined this way; it does not mean that an octopus has a human tongue distributed over its arms. See Molecular basis of chemotactile sensation in octopus.

This arrangement can make close-range exploration informative even when vision is limited. A sucker’s contact with a shell, crevice, or potential prey item can provide both physical and chemical evidence about what is being touched. The sensory result is concrete; claims about a conscious decision made from that information require a separate behavioral demonstration.

Light sensing in the arms

Electrophysiology reported in 2025 found that illuminating an octopus arm evoked activity in its axial nerve cord. In the tested preparation, blue light produced the strongest responses, with responses also recorded for red and green light. The authors reported that the responses were mediated through the arm skin and suckers. This is evidence for arm photoreception, not evidence that arms form images or replace the eyes. The findings are described in Neural responses to light stimulation in the octopus arm.

Arm photoreception could add local information while an arm is exploring, but the study does not establish how the signal is used during a natural hunt or puzzle. It should therefore be kept separate from the stronger, established claim that the eyes support visual discrimination.

Learning from more than one sensory channel

A pilot study of the plain-body octopus examined learning about objects through visual and tactile inputs. Prior experience with an object or picture affected subsequent learning about its video representation. The result supports cross-modal learning: information acquired through one kind of encounter can influence later learning in another presentation. It does not establish a general rule for all octopuses, because it was a pilot study in one species and the result concerns the tested learning sequence. The publication is Plain-Body Octopus’s Learning about Objects via Both Visual and Tactile Sensory Inputs.

How do octopuses learn?

Learning can be demonstrated in several ways, and the distinctions matter:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Discrimination: the animal responds differently to two or more stimuli.
  • Conditioning: a stimulus becomes associated with food, avoidance, or another outcome.
  • Retention: a learned response persists after a delay or intervening activity.
  • Transfer: the animal applies what it learned to a new orientation, stimulus, or presentation.
  • Flexible adaptation: performance changes when the rules or physical demands of the task change.

The puzzle experiment demonstrated acquisition and adaptation in the same apparatus. The polarization experiment demonstrated transfer of a visual discrimination. The plain-body octopus pilot linked tactile or visual experience with later learning about a video representation. These are related findings, but they are not interchangeable measures of intelligence.

Repeated success can also arise from trial-and-error. If an animal tries movements until one works and then repeats the successful sequence, the behavior is still learned and adaptive. It is not automatically evidence that the animal represented the hidden mechanism of the puzzle. That distinction is why the puzzle authors treated mental representations and generalized strategies as unresolved questions.

What does the octopus brain contribute to learning and memory?

Classic lesion and training work found evidence that tactile and visual discrimination involve partly different systems, while a region called the vertical lobe contributes to learning in both systems. In 1961, M. J. Wells wrote that “The vertical lobe plays a part in learning by either system, and is to some extent a store for both tactile and visual memories.” The original paper is available from the Journal of Experimental Biology.

That statement should be read in its historical context. It summarizes results from training and lesions in octopus, not a claim that the vertical lobe is a one-to-one equivalent of a particular human memory structure. The work supports functional specialization and participation in learning; it does not provide a complete map of how every memory is encoded or retrieved.

The nervous system also has to combine information arriving from highly active arms with information from the eyes and central brain. The sensory studies show that arms can detect touch, chemicals, and light locally. They do not, by themselves, reveal how a natural decision is divided between local arm processing and central control.

Do octopuses have good memory?

The defensible answer is that octopuses can retain and use learned information, but no single, general memory-duration figure is established by the studies considered here.

A 2023 review primer discusses cephalopod memory in relation to navigation, timing, and food selection. It covers cephalopods more broadly, including cuttlefish and squid, so a result from another cephalopod species must not be silently reassigned to octopuses. The review is Cephalopod learning and memory.

For octopuses specifically, the evidence in these experiments shows that animals can learn a route or discrimination and use prior sensory experience in later tasks. It does not establish how long a particular memory lasts in the wild, whether all memories decay at the same rate, or how navigation memories are represented. Those questions remain open rather than supporting a universal claim such as “octopuses remember for X days.”

Are octopuses intelligent?

“Intelligent” is a broad label. A careful assessment separates abilities that have direct experimental support from stronger interpretations that remain uncertain.

Claim level Evidence in the studies What can be said safely
Perception and discrimination Visual, tactile, chemical, and polarization cues can guide different responses. Supported in controlled sensory experiments.
Learning Octopuses acquire food-related actions and discriminations. Supported for the tested species, animals, and procedures.
Transfer Polarization discrimination transferred to new situations; prior object experience affected later video learning. Some learned relationships can be used beyond one exact training presentation.
Flexible problem performance Seven common octopuses reached criterion as a puzzle’s orientation and access conditions changed. Behavioral flexibility was demonstrated in that task.
General reasoning or mental representation The puzzle study did not resolve whether success depended on representations, generalized strategies, or trial-and-error. Do not present these stronger interpretations as established facts.

A 2019 review of cephalopod cognition places octopus abilities in a broad comparative context, while a 2020 review warns that many newer claims about complex cognition are largely anecdotal. The reviews are available through Cephalopod cognition and How intelligent is a cephalopod? Lessons from comparative cognition.

How the main findings compare

The following comparison keeps the variables that determine how far a result can be generalized: sensory modality, task, species and sample, experimental control, and transfer.

Study Species and sample Modality Task Controlled evidence and transfer
Richter et al., 2016 Common octopus (Octopus vulgaris), seven wild-caught animals Vision and arm-guided manipulation Open an L-shaped food container under changed orientations, a barrier, and randomized orientation Controlled puzzle; all reached criterion at each stage; performance adapted as conditions changed
Shashar and Cronin, 1996 Octopus; sample details are reported in the primary paper Polarization vision Discriminate targets with polarization contrast Controlled discrimination; transfer to new situations was reported
Wells, 1961 Octopus; training and lesion work Tactile and visual inputs Discrimination learning Controlled neurobehavioral evidence; identified different contributions of systems and the vertical lobe
Kawashima, Yasumuro and Ikeda, 2021 Plain-body octopus; pilot study Visual and tactile inputs Learning about objects and later video representations Controlled pilot; prior object or picture experience affected subsequent video learning
2020 chemotactile study Octopus; sensory-cell and molecular investigation Mechanical and contact chemical sensing Characterization of sucker and arm chemosensation Direct sensory evidence; it establishes contact chemosensation, not a complete problem-solving strategy
2025 arm-light study Octopus; electrophysiological arm preparation Arm photoreception Light stimulation of the arm Direct neural-response evidence; it does not demonstrate image formation or a behavioral solution

Why species and task details matter

Octopus is a common name for many species with different habitats, bodies, and behavior. The puzzle result concerns wild-caught Octopus vulgaris. The cross-modal pilot concerns the plain-body octopus. Reviews may discuss cuttlefish and squid alongside octopuses. A conclusion that crosses those boundaries without naming the species is broader than the evidence allows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sample size also changes the strength of a claim. Seven animals can provide a clear demonstration that a behavior is possible under the tested conditions, but it cannot establish how common the strategy is across a species. A pilot study can identify a promising effect without settling its size, reliability, or ecological importance.

Finally, a controlled experiment and an anecdotal observation answer different questions. A story about an octopus opening a container may be suggestive, but it cannot show whether the animal transferred a rule, repeated a previously learned movement, or simply discovered a successful action through exploration. Controlled changes and measured outcomes make those alternatives easier to evaluate.

What remains unknown

  • Mental representations: the puzzle experiment leaves unresolved whether octopuses represented hidden parts of the apparatus or relied on trial-and-error and generalized movement strategies.
  • Memory duration: the available sources do not establish one memory-life number for octopuses.
  • Navigation mechanisms: reviews discuss navigation and timing, but the mechanisms used by octopuses are not settled by the findings summarized here.
  • Natural relevance: a laboratory puzzle may reveal capacity without reproducing the sensory demands, risks, and choices of hunting in the wild.
  • Arm photoreception’s function: neural responses to light show that arms can detect illumination, but the role of that signal during natural behavior remains to be determined.
  • Generality across species: results from one octopus species, or from another cephalopod group, should not be treated as evidence about all octopuses.

How to judge a new claim about octopus problem solving

  1. Identify the species and sample. Check whether the report names the species and how many animals were tested.
  2. Identify the sensory modality. Ask whether the result concerns vision, touch, contact chemosensation, polarization, or a combination.
  3. Identify the task. Discrimination, conditioning, memory, and a novel physical puzzle measure different capacities.
  4. Look for a controlled change. Stronger evidence includes a changed orientation, new stimulus, delayed test, or other manipulation that rules out a single memorized movement.
  5. Check for transfer. Applying a learned relationship to a new situation is more informative than repeating the exact training setup.
  6. Separate behavior from interpretation. “Completed the task” is an observation; “understood the mechanism” is an additional hypothesis.
  7. Prefer replicated, measured results over a striking anecdote. Reviews of comparative cognition caution that many complex-cognition claims remain anecdotal.

Taken together, the evidence supports a specific picture: octopuses have unusually rich sensory access through their eyes, arms, and suckers; they can learn discriminations and food-related actions; and at least some individuals adapt when a physical task changes. The evidence does not require treating them as miniature humans or pretending that every clever behavior reveals the same kind of reasoning people use.
