There is no scientifically defensible overall winner among octopuses, dolphins, crows, and other cognitively capable animals. Their abilities were shaped by different bodies, habitats, diets, and social lives, and the key studies do not use one shared intelligence test.

A fair comparison instead asks which animal shows which capacity: octopuses adapt to changing physical problems, some dolphins learn tool-assisted hunting socially, and corvids show tool manufacture, social cognition, and future-oriented behavior. Those are different forms of intelligence, not points on a single ladder.

Why “the smartest animal” is the wrong starting point

Intelligence is a collection of abilities rather than a single measurable trait. A puzzle that tests an octopus’s arm coordination and manipulation does not measure the same thing as a dolphin’s socially transmitted hunting tradition or a crow’s ability to manufacture a tool for a later task.

The comparison is also affected by anatomy and ecology. Octopuses manipulate objects with eight flexible arms and live largely solitary lives. Dolphins coordinate in complex social groups and hunt in water. Crows and other corvids use grasping beaks, fly through terrestrial environments, and often live in stable social systems. A behavior that is useful in one niche may never be required in another.

For that reason, the useful question is not “Which species has the highest IQ?” No cross-species IQ score or common ranking has been established. The useful question is: What can each animal learn, invent, remember, and transmit under the conditions in which it evolved?

Octopuses: rapid adaptation to a changing physical puzzle

What the five-level experiment tested

Jan N. Richter, Binyamin Hochner, and M. J. Kuba studied seven wild-caught Octopus vulgaris from the Israeli Mediterranean coast. The animals first learned to open an L-shaped container to obtain food. Researchers then changed how the container had to be maneuvered through a tight opening, introducing barriers and different object orientations across five task levels. The challenge was not simply opening a box; it required the animal to adjust its movements when the physical conditions changed.

All seven animals met the researchers’ success criterion at every level. The paper’s abstract states: “All octopuses were successful in reaching criterion in all levels of the task.” Performance dipped when conditions changed, then improved quickly as the animals adapted. The authors interpret the pattern as behavioral flexibility and individual problem-solving strategies, not as a general intelligence score. The full 2016 experiment is available in PLOS ONE.

What this result does—and does not—show

  • It shows: the tested octopuses could learn a solution and modify their behavior when the puzzle’s geometry and obstacles changed.
  • It does not show: that octopuses outperform dolphins, crows, or humans across cognition, or that every octopus would solve every comparable puzzle.
  • It does show an evidence limitation: the sample contained seven animals and one species, and the task measured a specific form of physical problem-solving.

The study’s introduction notes that experimental data on octopus cognition remain scarce. Standardized testing is unusually difficult because an octopus’s flexible arms, soft body, and exploratory movements make it hard to create tasks that are physically equivalent across individuals. A successful puzzle performance is therefore valuable evidence, but it should be kept in its narrow experimental context.

Crows and corvids: a broad “tool kit” of physical and social cognition

Tool manufacture and causal reasoning

Nathan J. Emery and Nicola S. Clayton’s 2004 Science review examines cognition in crows and other corvids. It discusses tool manufacture, mental time travel, and social cognition, and frames complex intelligence as a “tool kit” that can include causal reasoning, behavioral flexibility, imagination, and prospection (thinking about future situations). The review argues that some of these capacities evolved independently in apes and corvids in response to comparable social and ecological problems.

The authors write that “Other large-brained social animals, such as corvids, also understand their physical and social worlds.” That is a statement in a review of the field, not the result of a direct crow-versus-octopus or crow-versus-dolphin experiment. Read the review through PubMed.

Why corvid evidence is difficult to reduce to one talent

Manufacturing a tool is different from merely picking up an object. It can require selecting a suitable material, changing its shape, and anticipating how that shape will affect a later action. Social cognition adds another layer: a corvid may need to track other individuals, competition, cooperation, or the consequences of hiding and recovering food.

These abilities make corvid cognition look broad, but the review does not provide a numerical league table. It also does not establish that a crow’s future-oriented behavior is equivalent to an octopus’s flexible arm movements or a dolphin’s socially learned hunting method. The comparison becomes meaningful only when the specific capacity and test conditions are named.

Dolphins: tool use transmitted through a social network

Sponge carrying in Shark Bay

A 2012 Nature Communications study by Janet Mann and colleagues examined bottlenose dolphins in Shark Bay, Australia. Some dolphins carry marine sponges on their rostra while foraging. The sponge appears to help protect the snout as the dolphin probes the seafloor for prey, making it a hunting tool rather than a random object interaction.

The behavior is socially patterned: it distinguishes groups, and the study strongly implicates mother-to-calf transmission as the main pathway by which the practice spreads. In other words, young dolphins can acquire a specialized foraging tradition from a close social partner. The study is available at Nature Communications.

The precise claim supported by dolphin tool use

Sponge use is evidence for social learning, a stable cultural tradition, and tool-assisted foraging in a particular population. It is not evidence that every bottlenose dolphin uses a sponge, that dolphins manufacture tools in the same sense as some corvids, or that dolphins are globally “smarter” than octopuses.

The social pathway matters. An octopus can solve a physical challenge without needing a group tradition, while a young dolphin’s tool behavior depends on a relationship in which a behavior can be observed and transmitted. Those are different routes to competence.

Other cephalopods and aquatic tool use broaden the picture

Learning, memory, camouflage, and play

A 2023 educational review in Frontiers for Young Minds surveys evidence on octopus and cuttlefish learning, memory, camouflage, play, foraging, and problem-solving. It emphasizes that cephalopod brain organization is strikingly different from vertebrate brains. Their cognitive abilities therefore represent a case of evolution arriving at sophisticated behavior through a very different nervous-system design.

The review also contrasts the mostly independent life histories of octopuses with the social learning available to animals such as dolphins and elephants. That contrast helps explain why an octopus may show impressive individual learning without displaying the same kind of group tradition seen in Shark Bay dolphins. The review can be read at Frontiers for Young Minds.

Carrying objects for later use

A 2014 review of aquatic-animal tool use reports veined octopuses carrying coconut shells, which can provide protection. It also discusses dolphin behaviors involving objects or environmental features during hunting. These examples expand the definition of tool use beyond a laboratory puzzle, but the review cautions that aquatic data are sparse, making systematic phylogenetic comparisons difficult. Carrying a shell, manufacturing a hook-like implement, and using a sponge are not interchangeable behaviors. They differ in whether the animal modifies the object, transports it for later use, relies on social teaching, or solves the problem alone.

Comparison by cognitive domain

Cognitive domain Octopuses Dolphins Crows and other corvids
Flexible physical problem-solving Seven O. vulgaris adapted across five changing food-retrieval levels; all reached criterion. The cited sponge study focused on a learned hunting behavior, not a changing laboratory puzzle. The review describes flexibility as part of a broader cognitive tool kit but does not test corvids against the octopus task.
Tool use Veined octopuses have been reported carrying coconut shells; the 2016 puzzle involved manipulating a container. Some Shark Bay bottlenose dolphins carry sponges while hunting. Corvid research reviewed by Emery and Clayton includes tool manufacture.
Social learning The puzzle study measured individual performance and did not test transmission through a group. Sponge use is group-patterned, with mother-to-calf transmission strongly implicated. The review treats social cognition as a major part of corvid intelligence.
Future-oriented behavior Not measured by the five-level food puzzle. Not the focus of the Shark Bay sponge-use study. Emery and Clayton discuss mental time travel and prospection in corvid cognition.
Evidence base Detailed experiment with seven animals; the authors note scarce experimental data and testing challenges. Detailed case of a culturally transmitted behavior in one dolphin population. A comparative review synthesizing multiple lines of corvid research rather than a single shared experiment.

How to make a fair comparison

1. Name the ability before naming the animal

“Problem-solving” can mean adapting a movement, inferring a hidden cause, manufacturing a tool, or coordinating with a partner. State which ability is being measured. The octopus experiment is strongest evidence for adaptation to changed physical conditions; the dolphin study is strongest evidence for socially transmitted tool use; the corvid review covers a wider set of physical and social capacities.

2. Separate individual learning from cultural transmission

An animal can invent a solution alone, copy a solution from another animal, or inherit a tradition through repeated social exposure. These pathways should not be treated as interchangeable. Sponge carrying is notable precisely because social networks and mother-to-calf learning help explain its distribution among dolphins.

3. Check the task, sample, and replication

A result from seven octopuses is informative but cannot establish a population-wide ranking. A behavior observed in Shark Bay should not automatically be generalized to every dolphin population. A review of corvid cognition provides a framework and accumulated evidence, but it is not a standardized head-to-head trial. Strong comparisons require matched tasks, adequate samples, and replication across populations.

4. Account for the animal’s body and habitat

Manipulating a box with flexible arms, carrying a sponge on a snout, and manufacturing a tool with a beak place different motor and sensory demands on the animal. A test can accidentally reward the anatomy for which it was designed. Ecologically meaningful comparisons ask whether the behavior solves a real problem in the species’ normal environment.

5. Avoid converting one result into an IQ score

None of the cited sources establishes a cross-species IQ equivalent, a single numerical intelligence scale, or an overall ranking. Assigning one would discard the distinctions that make the evidence interpretable.

What the evidence supports

Octopuses clearly demonstrate learning and flexible problem-solving in controlled physical tasks, even though their cognition remains comparatively under-researched. Dolphins provide a well-documented example of a hunting tool whose use is socially patterned and strongly linked to mother-to-calf transmission. Corvids show a wide range of capacities discussed under causal reasoning, flexibility, imagination, prospection, tool manufacture, and social cognition.

These findings support convergent evolution: sophisticated cognition can arise in distantly related animals when their environments reward different solutions. They do not support a single ladder with one species permanently at the top. The most accurate answer to “Is a crow smarter than an octopus?” is therefore conditional: a crow may be better documented at tool manufacture or future-oriented social behavior, while an octopus may excel at adapting its body and actions to a changing physical puzzle. “Smarter” has to specify the task.

Bottom line

Octopus, dolphin, and corvid intelligence are best compared by domain, ecology, and evidence quality. Octopuses show rapid individual flexibility; dolphins show socially transmitted tool use; and crows and other corvids show a broad physical and social cognitive repertoire. Because the studies use different species, tasks, and settings, science does not justify naming one overall winner.
