Ocean warming is rearranging where marine species can live. Many populations are tracking cooler conditions toward the poles or into deeper water, but neither destination is universal. Temperature interacts with oxygen, habitat depth, currents, food webs, fishing and geography, so neighboring species can move at different speeds—or in opposite directions.
The IPCC finds with high confidence that marine ranges and seasonal activities have shifted since about 1950 as oceans warmed, sea ice changed and oxygen declined. These redistributions alter which species share an ecosystem and can change fishing, recreation and cultural opportunities.
What ocean warming changes in a species’ habitat
Every marine species has a range of conditions in which it can survive, grow and reproduce. Temperature is one of the strongest constraints. As seawater warms, a location that was formerly suitable can become stressful, while cooler water elsewhere becomes comparatively favorable. A population may therefore maintain a similar thermal environment by changing latitude, depth or both.

This process is often called thermal tracking. It does not mean that every individual swims directly toward a pole. A range edge can move because abundance falls in one place, increases in another, or because occupancy expands and contracts. Detectability, fishing pressure and changing habitat can also alter the apparent edge.

Observed changes are usually measured over years or decades. They describe a biological distribution, not an instantaneous response to a single warm season. Long-lived animals, species with limited dispersal and organisms tied to fixed habitat may respond more slowly than plankton or mobile fish.
Why poleward movement is common—but not universal
At the surface, warming generally pushes the boundary of a species’ preferred temperature toward higher latitudes. Across marine taxa and communities, the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report estimates a mean poleward displacement of 59.2 ± 15.5 kilometers per decade associated with surface warming since the 1950s. That is an average with substantial variation among regions and taxonomic groups, not a forecast for every population. IPCC AR6 WGII Chapter 3 (2022)
An earlier IPCC assessment reported very likely poleward shifts of 52 ± 33 kilometers per decade in epipelagic organisms and 29 ± 16 kilometers per decade in seafloor ecosystems since the 1950s. The two rates use different ecosystem groupings and should not be treated as interchangeable with the AR6 mean. IPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere (2019)

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSeveral factors can prevent a simple poleward response:
- No suitable habitat exists farther poleward. A species may encounter a continental boundary, a different seafloor type or unsuitable seasonal conditions.
- Temperature may not be the limiting variable. Low oxygen, salinity, acidity, food supply or disease can set the range edge instead.
- Population trends can mask movement. A declining population may disappear from its warm edge without establishing a stable population at the cool edge.
- Species differ in tolerance and mobility. A predator, its prey and the habitat-forming organism it depends on may move at different rates.
- Human activity can override climate signals. Fishing, coastal construction, shipping and pollution can reduce occupancy or create barriers to expansion.
The vertical dimension: deeper water can be the cooler refuge
Latitude is only one axis of a three-dimensional ocean. In many regions, the same temperature occurs at greater depth as surface waters warm. Species may therefore deepen rather than—or in addition to—moving poleward.

A 2025 analysis of 63 large marine ecosystems found that 77% of vertical climate velocities were negative, indicating that isotherms (layers of equal temperature) were generally deepening. This is a measure of how climatic conditions move through the water column; it is not the share of species observed migrating deeper. Gruenburg et al., Nature Climate Change (2025)
Biological observations can differ from climate velocity because animals need oxygen, prey and appropriate substrate. The seafloor may be too shallow to provide additional depth, or pressure and light may become unsuitable. A species that follows a cool isotherm but loses access to food is not successfully tracking its full habitat.

A 2026 study of the European continental shelf illustrates this distinction. Across 92,961 bottom-trawl samples covering 607 fish species over four decades, 60% of populations increased their average depth. The same dataset showed 49% shifted poleward and 51% shifted equatorward, demonstrating that deepening can occur without a uniform latitudinal trend in one region. Auber et al., Nature Communications (2026)
How changing currents shape the direction and speed
Currents transport heat and move water masses, creating the temperature, oxygen and chemical gradients that organisms experience. They also provide pathways for drifting eggs, larvae and plankton, and they connect habitats that would otherwise be separated. A current can therefore make a newly suitable area reachable, slow the arrival of a population, or carry organisms into conditions that are unfavorable.
Currents do not act as a single, universal conveyor belt. The IPCC identifies local temperature, oxygen and currents—across depth and both latitudinal and longitudinal gradients—as factors shaping the observed rate and direction of range shifts. The balance differs by species and place. IPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere (2019)

Advection versus habitat tracking
Advection is the transport of water and anything carried with it. A current can move larvae or plankton into a region before adults can occupy it. By contrast, a mobile fish may actively seek a preferred temperature while using a current that changes the energetic cost of movement. For a bottom-dwelling species, current-driven sediment or nutrient changes may matter more than horizontal transport.

- A warm boundary current may allow a warm-water species to extend poleward while displacing a cold-water competitor.
- An eddy or seasonal current can create a temporary pocket of suitable conditions that does not support a permanent range expansion.
- A current may deliver larvae but not the oxygen, prey or substrate needed for them to survive.
- Changes in current strength or route can alter timing, so seasonal observations may shift even when a long-term range edge does not.
Because currents, temperature and oxygen change together, assigning a local redistribution to currents alone is not justified without location-specific evidence.
Evidence from different habitats does not all measure the same thing
Scientific estimates become comparable only when their dimension, metric, geography and sampling period are clear. The table separates the major findings and identifies what each number actually represents.
| Source and setting | Measurement | Result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| IPCC Special Report, marine ecosystems since the 1950s | Poleward distribution shifts | 52 ± 33 km per decade in epipelagic organisms; 29 ± 16 km per decade in seafloor ecosystems | Very likely rates for two ecosystem groupings; temperature, oxygen and currents shape direction and speed. |
| IPCC AR6 WGII, marine taxa and communities since the 1950s | Mean poleward displacement associated with surface warming | 59.2 ± 15.5 km per decade | A cross-taxon and regional mean, not a universal species rate. |
| Gruenburg et al. (2025), 63 large marine ecosystems | Vertical climate velocity | 77% of values were negative | Most assessed isotherms deepened; this describes moving climatic conditions, not observed species movement. |
| Auber et al. (2026), European continental shelf | Fish population depth and latitude changes in 92,961 bottom-trawl samples, 607 species, four decades | 60% deepened; 49% shifted poleward; 51% shifted equatorward | Deepening was common, while latitudinal direction was nearly evenly divided in this study area. |
| Fuchs et al. (2024), Australian shallow reefs, 662 species | Range-edge movement over a decade of climate extremes | About 100 km per decade within regions; little net movement at the continental scale | Local edges moved in directions expected from warming or cooling, but those shifts did not add up to persistent continent-wide migration. |
The Australian result is an important caution: a range edge can move substantially within a region while the species shows little net displacement across an entire continent. Scale and metric can change the apparent answer.
What happens to communities when ranges are rearranged
When species do not move together, community composition changes. A newly arriving herbivore may encounter unfamiliar algae; a predator may follow prey into a region where competitors are already established; and a habitat-forming species may retreat before dependent organisms can follow. These altered interactions can cascade through abundance, biomass production and ecosystem functioning.

For people, redistribution changes where a species is available rather than simply changing a map. Fishing fleets may find target species farther offshore, deeper or in a neighboring jurisdiction. Recreational anglers, aquaculture operators and coastal communities can encounter new species while losing familiar ones. Cultural practices tied to seasonal or local abundance may be affected even if total regional biomass remains similar. The NOAA overview describes these distribution changes as directly relevant to coastal communities. NOAA, Marine Species Distribution
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How scientists determine whether warming or currents are responsible
A credible attribution separates several questions rather than treating every range change as migration.
- Define the response. Specify whether the study tracks a range edge, a distribution centroid, occupancy, abundance, biomass or community composition.
- Choose the spatial dimension. Record latitude, longitude and depth. A horizontal survey can miss a population that has moved down the water column.
- Match the time scale. Compare repeated observations over enough years to distinguish a persistent trend from a seasonal pulse or short-lived marine heatwave.
- Map the physical environment. Test local temperature alongside oxygen, salinity, depth, habitat and current conditions rather than using surface temperature alone.
- Check ecological and human covariates. Include prey, competitors, predators, fishing effort, habitat loss and barriers that could change abundance independently of climate.
- Compare with climate velocity. A moving isotherm predicts where suitable temperature may occur; biological surveys are needed to show whether a population actually occupies that place.
This workflow explains why two studies can report different directions without one being wrong: they may examine different taxa, habitats, dimensions or metrics.
Common mistakes when reading range-shift claims
“All marine species are moving poleward”
The broad average is poleward, but equatorward shifts, stationary populations and local contractions also occur. The European shelf study found nearly equal poleward and equatorward movements while deepening was more prevalent.
“A negative vertical velocity means 77% of species moved deeper”
Negative vertical climate velocity means the temperature structure moved downward in 77% of assessed large ecosystems. It is an environmental signal, not a species count.

“A moving edge proves migration”
An edge can move because abundance declines at the warm boundary, increases at the cool boundary, or detection changes. Confirming establishment requires repeated observations of occupancy and reproduction.
“Currents caused the shift”
Currents influence transport and gradients, but temperature, oxygen, habitat, food webs and human pressure operate at the same time. A current-only explanation overstates what the available evidence can show.
“One decade is enough to predict a permanent range”
Short records can capture extreme events or temporary incursions. The Australian reef analysis found strong within-region edge movements over a decade but little net continental-scale change.
What to expect as warming continues
The most defensible expectation is continued redistribution in three dimensions, with strong regional differences. Some populations will track cooler water poleward, some will deepen, and others will contract when oxygen, habitat or food prevent thermal tracking. Current changes can speed, slow or redirect those responses.
Managers therefore need monitoring that combines temperature, oxygen, currents, depth and biological surveys. Fisheries rules, protected-area boundaries and seasonal planning based on historical species locations can become mismatched as abundance and community composition change. Planning for flexible boundaries and repeated reassessment is more robust than assuming a single universal migration route.
