Properties, tags, and links solve different metadata problems in Obsidian. Properties hold consistent, typed facts; tags classify notes; links express relationships between notes, files, headings, and blocks. An automated vault becomes dependable when you choose a stable schema, write valid YAML, distinguish labels from relationships, and confirm exactly what each automation surface reads or changes.
The three roles at a glance
Treating all metadata as interchangeable is the fastest way to make an automated vault difficult to query. A property answers “what value does this note have?”, a tag answers “what broad class does this note belong to?”, and a link answers “what other item is this note connected to?” They can describe the same note without doing the same job.

This is a practical design model, not a taxonomy imposed by Obsidian. A project note might use a status property, a work tag, and a link to a project index. Keeping those roles separate makes filtering and scripts more predictable.
Properties: structured facts in YAML
Obsidian stores properties as YAML at the beginning of a Markdown note. Property names are unique within a note, and each name has a type. The documented types include text, list, number, checkbox, date, date-time, and the special tags type. Once a property name is assigned a type, that type applies consistently across the vault, so changing a value from a date to arbitrary prose can break views or scripts that expect a date.

Choose fields that automation can trust
Use properties for values that should be present in a consistent shape: status with a small set of allowed values, reviewed as a date, source as text, or related as a list of links. Decide whether values are lower-case, whether dates use one format, and which status names are valid before creating templates. Consistency matters more than the particular names you choose.
What the normal interface does not do
Properties are searchable, but Obsidian documents nested properties and bulk editing as unsupported in its ordinary property interface. If hundreds of notes need a schema change, an external script or a community plugin may be appropriate. Make a backup and test on copied notes first: a bulk YAML edit can alter every downstream filter and template.
Tags: classification, not a hidden property
Tags are labels for classification and grouping. They can appear in note content, such as #work, or in the built-in tags property, which is a list. Bases exposes file.tags as the tags found in both content and frontmatter, so a view can group notes regardless of where the tag was written.

A hashtag-looking string inside an ordinary text property does not become a tag. For example, topic: "#work" is text in the topic field, not an entry in the note’s tag set. Use the special tags property when you want a frontmatter tag, or place the hashtag in the note body. This distinction prevents tag searches from silently missing notes.

When a tag is the right choice
- Use a tag for broad, reusable classification such as
work,reading, or待-review. - Use a property when the value has a defined type or needs one value per field, such as a date, checkbox, or controlled status.
- Use a link when the item is another note or file that should have its own content and backlinks.
Do not turn every possible category into a tag. A tag set that mixes workflow states, people, projects, and file formats becomes hard to govern; reserve tags for classifications that benefit from a many-to-many filter.
Links: relationships among notes and files
Internal links connect notes and files into a navigable network. Obsidian supports Wikilinks such as [[Three laws of motion]] and Markdown links such as [Three laws of motion](Three%20laws%20of%20motion.md). A link can target a note, a heading, or a block. Obsidian’s internal-link documentation describes linking as a way to create a network of knowledge; the important automation consequence is that a relationship remains meaningful even when the linked note has its own properties and tags.
Links in frontmatter need quoting
YAML interprets punctuation, brackets, and other characters. Quote a Wikilink when it is stored in a text or list property, for example related: "[[Project A]]". Obsidian automatically quotes links entered manually in properties, but templates and templating plugins require care. An unquoted value can produce invalid YAML or a value that a view no longer recognizes as a link.

Renames and link maintenance
Obsidian has a setting to automatically update internal links when a file is renamed. Enable it if your workflow regularly reorganizes files, then verify the behavior in a test vault before relying on it in scripts. A link field should express a relationship, not a copied filename that an automation must constantly repair.

A small schema that combines all three
The following example is intentionally modest. The keys and classifications are conventions you choose; they are not Obsidian defaults.

---Here, type, status, and reviewed are ordinary properties. tags is the special tag list, so work is discoverable as a tag. related is a list property containing a quoted internal link. A script can test status as a controlled value, a Bases view can filter file.tags, and a reader can follow the relationship to the project index.
Keep values predictable
- Choose one spelling for each field;
statusandstateshould not represent the same concept in different folders. - Use one date convention and do not mix date-only and date-time values in the same field.
- Keep controlled values finite and documented, such as
active,paused, anddone. - Use lists for multiple relationships instead of comma-separated text that scripts must parse.
- Do not create duplicate YAML keys; parsers may keep only one occurrence or behave differently.
How Bases brings metadata together
Bases can display and filter note properties alongside file-level information. Its syntax distinguishes note properties from file properties. The file fields include file.links, which includes internal links including frontmatter links, and file.tags, which includes tags from content and frontmatter. This lets one view show a project’s status, the notes it references, and its classifications without copying those values into a second database.

A useful view design
- Use a property column for the structured decision you need to sort, such as
statusorreviewed. - Add
file.tagswhen you need broad grouping across body and frontmatter tags. - Add
file.linkswhen the relationship itself matters, such as finding every note connected to an index. - Filter on one role at a time first, then combine filters only after confirming that each field returns the expected values.
Bases exposes capabilities; it does not prescribe a universal schema or guarantee that every third-party workflow refreshes data in the same way. Test a view after a template change, a file rename, and an automated property update in the vault where it will run.

Automation surfaces and what they actually change
Obsidian CLI
The official CLI provides supported operations to list properties and tags, read or set a property on a file, remove a property, and search the vault. That is a useful foundation for scripts that audit missing fields, normalize values, or find notes by metadata. CLI syntax and availability are version-sensitive, so inspect the current help for the installed application rather than copying a command from an older article.
For safe bulk work, begin with a read-only inventory: list the files and fields that match, write the result to a reviewable log, and run the mutation against a controlled copy. After setting or removing a property, reopen several notes and refresh the relevant Bases view. A command that succeeds at the file level can still produce an unexpected type for a view.
Obsidian URI
Obsidian URI is a separate integration path for applications that launch or populate notes. Its documented actions include new, which creates a note, and open, which navigates to a note or vault. The prepend and append parameters add content and attempt to merge properties. URI values must be correctly encoded, especially when they contain spaces, brackets, or line breaks.

The documented property merge is an attempt, and an external caller may not handle malformed YAML, permissions, or a disconnected vault safely. Have the receiving note validate the result before another automation depends on it.

Templates
Templates provide repeatable structure. Obsidian merges template properties with properties already present in a note, which is convenient for adding standard fields without replacing existing metadata. Define the expected fields in the template and avoid duplicate YAML keys. If the template inserts internal links into frontmatter, keep those values quoted.
A reliable implementation workflow
- Define the schema. Write down field names, types, allowed values, date format, and which concepts are tags versus links.
- Create a test note. Include one value of every type, a frontmatter tag, a body tag, and a quoted link property.
- Inspect the note as raw Markdown. Check that YAML starts and ends correctly and that list indentation is valid.
- Build one Bases view. Display the chosen properties plus
file.tagsandfile.links; verify that each appears where expected. - Run automation in read-only mode. Use CLI searches or an equivalent audit to find missing and inconsistent values.
- Mutate a copy. Test a single property set, removal, template insertion, or URI call before scaling up.
- Recheck after structural changes. Rename a test file, refresh the view, and confirm links, tags, and typed values still resolve.
Common failure modes and fixes

Design decisions that keep an automated vault maintainable
Use properties for machine decisions, tags for broad human-facing classification, and links for navigable context. Resist the temptation to encode a relationship as a tag or a workflow state as a filename. When a concept needs its own notes, backlinks, and additional metadata, make it a link target. When it needs sorting, validation, or date arithmetic, make it a property.
Finally, treat documentation as capability information rather than a promise that every integration behaves identically. Obsidian’s properties, Bases, CLI, URI, and template features are maintained and can change; CLI syntax is particularly version-sensitive. Keep a small test vault, record your schema, and verify the actual automation against the installed version before applying it to the entire collection.
