NYT Connections does not use a conventional points total in ordinary play. The game records whether you solve the daily puzzle before using all four allowed mistakes, how many mistakes you make, and your wins and streaks. A separate Connections Bot feature gives eligible subscribers skill and solution-uniqueness ratings. Keeping those measures distinct is the key to understanding what your results actually mean.
How to play NYT Connections
Each puzzle presents 16 words. Your task is to sort them into four groups of four, with each group sharing a connection. Some connections are direct, such as four words that name kinds of fish; others rely on wordplay, such as words that begin with “fire.” The game uses yellow, green, blue, and purple to identify the four categories, with yellow described as easiest and purple as trickiest. The colors communicate relative difficulty, not a points multiplier or a quantified difficulty score. NYT’s Connections help page explains the rules and examples.
There is exactly one solution to a puzzle, but the words are chosen so that some can plausibly fit more than one category. That overlap is intentional: four words may look like a convincing set while one or more of them actually belongs in another group. NYT says editors curate categories and words using the Oxford Dictionary. A successful submission removes those four words from the board and displays their category and color. A wrong submission uses one of your mistakes. Tom’s Guide’s how-to guide also describes the board and the four-mistake limit.

What counts as a score in Connections?
For ordinary play, think of your result as a set of separate measures rather than one universal number. The game’s official statistics focus on completion, wins, mistakes, and streaks. The help page does not describe an ordinary-play formula that awards points for each category or subtracts a fixed number of points for a wrong guess. A number you see in a community-made scoring system should not be mistaken for an official NYT score.

NYT defines its statistics as follows:
| Statistic | What it records | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Puzzles Completed | All puzzles completed, including solved puzzles and failures. | It is a count of completed attempts, not a count of wins. |
| Win Rate | Puzzles won by completing in fewer than four mistakes, divided by puzzles played. | A win can include one, two, or three mistakes; a zero-mistake solve is not required. |
| Current Streak | Consecutive daily wins, using the local-midnight boundary. | It measures a run of wins, not the number of puzzles solved in total. |
| Max Streak | Your longest run of consecutive daily wins. | It preserves your best streak even when the current one ends. |
| Perfect Puzzles | Puzzles solved with zero mistakes. | This is a narrower measure than winning: a puzzle with a mistake can still be a win. |
| Mistake Histogram | Puzzles grouped by the number of mistakes, from zero through four. | It shows the distribution of your attempts rather than reducing them to one rating. |
These definitions come from the NYT Help Center. In particular, “under four mistakes” means fewer than four, not four or fewer. Three mistakes can still result in a win if you finish the puzzle; the fourth exhausts the allowance and ends the game. That is why the histogram can include a four-mistake result even though that attempt does not qualify as a win under the official definition.
How mistakes work and when the game ends
A submitted set that is not one of the puzzle’s four groups counts as one mistake. The allowance is four. With the first three wrong submissions, the puzzle remains playable; if you make a fourth mistake before solving, the game ends without a win. The interface mechanics and four-mistake limit are described by Tom’s Guide, while NYT’s help page supplies the official win-rate definition.
This distinction matters when you evaluate a result. “I solved it” and “I solved it perfectly” are different outcomes, and a solve after one, two, or three mistakes still meets the win-rate threshold. By contrast, a run that ends at the fourth mistake is not a win. Your mistake count also has value beyond the win/loss distinction because the histogram preserves how close or clean your attempts were.

The available official definitions do not say that the game deducts ordinary points for mistakes or assigns a point value to yellow, green, blue, or purple. A player may choose to describe a performance as a personal score, such as “three mistakes” or “a perfect solve,” but those labels describe the attempt; they are not a shared numerical total. When comparing two results, keep the measures separate: completion, mistake count, whether it was a win, streak status, and any Bot rating describe different things.
How to reduce avoidable mistakes
A wrong guess costs part of a finite allowance, so it is useful to treat a proposed group as a hypothesis rather than submit the first appealing pattern. Because NYT deliberately includes words that can plausibly fit multiple categories, recognition alone is not enough; the stronger test is whether the four words form a defensible connection and whether the remaining board can still be divided into three coherent groups.
- Scan all 16 words before submitting. Look for obvious shared meanings, phrases, word forms, or other patterns, but do not assume the first four apparent matches are a correct category. The official examples include both a semantic group and a wordplay group, so consider more than one kind of connection.
- Check ambiguous words against the full board. If a word appears to fit two possible sets, hold it back and examine what each choice would leave behind. The puzzle’s deliberately overlapping possibilities make this a useful way to detect a red herring.
- Test the remaining board, not just the proposed set. A plausible group should make it possible to account for the other 12 words as three groups of four. If accepting one word leaves several other words without a reasonable home, reconsider the choice before submitting.
- Spend a mistake only when the likely benefit justifies it. A wrong submission consumes one of four attempts, so a speculative guess can reduce your room to recover. If the connection is still unclear, continue comparing candidate groupings rather than treating a guess as a harmless test.
- Use the category and color after a correct solve as information. The group is removed and its category/color is shown, reducing the board and confirming one part of the puzzle. That can help you reason about the remaining words, but the color should not be treated as a score bonus.
Some how-to coverage reports that the interface may indicate when a wrong set is close, but the NYT help page cited here does not document the exact behavior or wording of that notification. Do not depend on a particular “close” message or assume it will identify which word is misplaced; make decisions from the board and the rules rather than from an unverified interface phrase.

What Connections Bot scores mean
Connections Bot is a separate feature from the game’s ordinary statistics. NYT says the Bot provides a skill score and a solution-uniqueness rating, along with category difficulty and order, common mistakes, and guess-by-guess feedback. Those measures analyze a player’s solution in ways that the basic win rate and mistake histogram do not. A Bot rating should therefore not be substituted for the ordinary result or described as the game’s universal score.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAccess to the Bot is limited to All Access, Home Delivery, and Games subscribers, according to the NYT Help Center. If you are comparing results with another player, first establish whether you mean the number of mistakes, a win, a streak, or a Bot measure such as skill or solution uniqueness. Each answers a different question: how many errors occurred, whether the puzzle was completed within the limit, whether wins were consecutive, or how the Bot evaluates the solution.
When the daily puzzle resets and how streaks work
The daily puzzle releases at midnight in the player’s timezone. NYT says a puzzle must be solved before local midnight to count toward the current streak; finishing after midnight breaks the streak and starts a new one. This local-time boundary can make streak tracking differ from a simple count of puzzles played or completed. The rule and statistic definitions are on the official help page.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →That separation makes archive play useful for practice without treating it as another day in a live streak. It also means a player should not assume every archive result changes every statistic: NYT says selected stats are affected, while streaks are excluded. The completed-puzzle restriction prevents repeating an already-finished archive entry to produce a different result for that same puzzle.

Why Connections can feel harder than simple word matching
Connections is a classification task with a built-in ambiguity problem: the words can suggest several plausible relationships, but only one arrangement is the intended solution. This design can reward slowing down and checking how a choice affects the rest of the board, rather than simply spotting any four related words. The categories also range from direct semantic links to wordplay, so recognizing one kind of association does not guarantee that the other groups will be equally obvious.
A 2024 research paper by Angel Yahir Loredo Lopez, Tyler McDonald, and Ali Emami describes a dataset of 358 Connections puzzles collected from the game’s debut on June 12, 2023, through June 3, 2024. The paper, “NYT-Connections: A Deceptively Simple Text Classification Task that Stumps System-1 Thinkers”, treats the game as a word-grouping task that can tempt quick but misleading associations. Its 358-puzzle figure describes that study’s dataset; it is not NYT’s official count of all puzzles and says nothing about the average player’s performance.
Quick way to interpret your result
- Four mistakes: the allowance is exhausted and the attempt is a loss.
- Zero to three mistakes and solved: the puzzle is completed within the official win-rate threshold.
- Zero mistakes: the result also qualifies as a perfect puzzle.
- A run of daily wins: tracked as a streak, with the player’s local midnight determining the day boundary.
- Bot feedback: a separate subscriber feature, not an ordinary-play points formula.
So if someone asks for your “Connections score,” clarify which result they mean. The game’s ordinary record is based on wins, mistakes, completion, and streaks; the Bot adds its own evaluations for eligible subscribers. There is no single official points total in the NYT help material that combines all of those into one number.
