Modern nuclear forensics can test whether uranium metal fits a claimed history by combining isotope ratios, trace elements and age measurements. Analyses of samples linked to Germany’s wartime nuclear program found natural uranium and no evidence of substantial neutron irradiation. Those results help trace the material; they do not show that the program achieved a self-sustaining reactor or produced a nuclear weapon.
What scientists examined
Mayer and colleagues analyzed three materials: powder from a uranium cube provided by Germany’s Federal Office for Radiation Protection, a metal slice from a cube at the Atomkeller Museum in Haigerloch, and pieces of the Wirtz uranium plate. They compared their signatures with uranium yellowcake associated with Otto Hahn’s laboratory and uranium ores or concentrates from Joachimsthal/Jáchymov and Shinkolobwe. The 2015 study describes the samples and methods.
The team asked several distinct questions: Was the uranium enriched in uranium-235? Had it been exposed to neutrons? When was it last chemically separated? And which ore sources might match its elemental signatures? No single test answers all of these. The researchers combined uranium isotope ratios, plutonium and thorium measurements, strontium isotope ratios, rare-earth-element patterns and age-dating techniques, using methods that included mass spectrometry and alpha spectrometry.
What the measurements show
The uranium was natural, not enriched
The tested metal had the isotopic composition of natural uranium, not uranium enriched in uranium-235. This finding describes the analyzed material; it should not be generalized automatically to every surviving cube.

The samples showed no significant neutron exposure
The measured uranium isotope and plutonium signatures did not indicate substantial neutron irradiation. The samples therefore do not document a sustained chain reaction in the uranium they represent. That is a conclusion about the tested material, not a complete account of every experiment or component in the broader wartime program.
The ore signatures point toward Joachimsthal/Jáchymov
Trace-element patterns and strontium isotope comparisons were consistent with uranium ore from Joachimsthal/Jáchymov, in what is now the Czech Republic. This is a provenance inference based on the studied samples and comparison materials—not proof that all cubes came from that source.

Age measurements fit the wartime history
The age analysis was consistent with the production history described in the paper and supported the authenticity of the examined metal as material associated with German uranium projects of the 1940s. It does not establish a custody history for every cube.

A cube’s appearance or label alone cannot establish where its uranium came from or what happened to it. Forensic analysis combines independent signatures, each suited to a different question. Isotope ratios can characterize uranium and reveal changes associated with enrichment or irradiation; trace elements and strontium isotopes can help compare material with candidate ore sources; age measurements can test whether its chemical history fits a proposed period.

The strength of a conclusion depends on what was sampled and what the measurement can establish. A bulk metal sample and flakes from a surface are not interchangeable evidence, and a match to a likely ore source is not the same as a documented chain of custody. For that reason, conclusions should remain tied to the specific cube or material that was analyzed.
What a later cube investigation adds—and what it does not
A separate investigation reported in 2021 used radiochronometry on another cube. According to the EurekAlert announcement and Chemistry World’s report, researchers detected styrene in flakes taken from surface layers and interpreted the result as indicating that the cube had at some point been part of Diebner’s program.

That reported interpretation is evidence from a separate sample and analysis, not a complete provenance chain. The reported finding does not establish that styrene uniquely identifies a cube, nor does it make the results from different cubes interchangeable.

What the cubes say about the wartime reactor effort
The Haigerloch machine was an experimental uranium-and-heavy-water reactor design, not a nuclear weapon. A 2024 historical review describes the effort as technically serious for its time but far from producing significant plutonium. It identifies limited heavy-water effectiveness, shortages of heavy water and uranium fuel, and lack of time among the constraints.

The forensic findings fit the picture of a program that did not produce evidence of a sustained chain reaction in the tested uranium. They do not independently explain why the broader effort failed, prove that an operational reactor was achieved, or show that Germany built a bomb. Historical accounts should distinguish documented experiments and resource limits from simplified claims that the scientists either deliberately sabotaged the project or came close to a weapon.
