A fission reactor could support a spacecraft in two different ways: nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP) uses reactor heat to make thrust, while nuclear electric propulsion (NEP) converts reactor heat into electricity for an electric thruster. NTP offers relatively high thrust; NEP produces lower thrust but can accelerate for long periods using propellant efficiently. Either architecture can also provide electricity for spacecraft systems and science instruments when solar power is impractical.

These are proposed and developing capabilities, not evidence that a fission-powered spacecraft has already flown. NASA has reported a relevant ground test and described future mission plans, but a ground-tested reactor and a planned flight demonstration are not the same as an operational deep-space mission.

How could a nuclear reactor power a spacecraft?

Fission is the spacecraft’s energy source, not a complete propulsion system by itself. In a reactor, fission releases heat. The spacecraft’s other equipment determines whether that energy becomes thrust, electricity for instruments and communications, or both. The full design can include heat-transfer hardware, a propellant supply, an engine or thruster, power-conversion equipment, radiators, shielding and the spacecraft bus.

The choice of architecture matters because heat can be used in two fundamentally different ways. Nuclear thermal propulsion transfers reactor heat directly to propellant. Nuclear electric propulsion first turns reactor heat into electricity and then uses that electricity to accelerate propellant. A reactor therefore does not make NTP and NEP interchangeable: they have different thrust profiles, hardware demands and mission uses.

What is the difference between NTP and NEP?

Feature Nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP) Nuclear electric propulsion (NEP)
How energy produces thrust Reactor heat warms a flowing propellant, which expands through a rocket nozzle. Reactor heat is converted into electricity that powers an electric thruster.
Thrust profile Relatively high thrust. Low thrust applied over extended periods.
Propellant efficiency NASA describes it as about twice as propellant-efficient as chemical rockets in its overview; specific performance depends on the design and mission. Very high propellant efficiency in NASA’s overview; the spacecraft builds velocity through prolonged acceleration rather than a short, powerful burn.
Typical mission appeal Substantial thrust and the possibility of reducing trip time on selected mission profiles. Efficient, sustained acceleration, potential payload and trajectory flexibility, and electricity for spacecraft systems.
Major system demands A high-temperature reactor and propellant system, with benefits shaped by vehicle and mission design. Long thrust duration, plus power conversion, radiators and electric-thruster hardware.

This is a qualitative comparison, not a universal ranking. Specific impulse, payload, trip time and trajectory depend on the reactor and propulsion design, the spacecraft’s mass, the route and the time allowed for the mission. NASA describes NEP specific impulse in the range of 2,000–8,000 seconds in a 2023 technical showcase paper by Kurt A. Polzin and Michael G. Houts. That is a study range, not a specification for every NEP system.

NTP: heat goes straight to the propellant

In an NTP engine, propellant flows through a reactor and takes up heat. NASA materials commonly discuss hydrogen as the propellant. The hot gas then expands through a nozzle to produce thrust. The defining feature is the direct thermal path: reactor heat raises the propellant’s energy, and the nozzle turns the expanding gas into a directed exhaust.

NASA characterizes NTP as a higher-thrust option than electric propulsion and says its overview system is about twice as propellant-efficient as chemical rockets. That broad comparison should not be mistaken for a promised trip time or payload. Those outcomes depend on a specific vehicle, mission and operating profile, and the high-temperature reactor and propellant system must be considered as part of the whole spacecraft.

NEP: reactor heat becomes electricity first

NEP uses a heat-to-electricity conversion system to power an electric thruster. The thruster ionizes and accelerates a gaseous propellant. Because the thrust is low compared with NTP, NEP is not about delivering one short, powerful push; its approach is to apply thrust for a long time and accumulate velocity gradually.

This trades thrust for propellant efficiency and time. NEP may suit missions where long-duration acceleration and payload or trajectory options matter more than a brief high-thrust burn. The system also has to support its conversion equipment, thruster and radiators, rather than treating reactor output as electricity that is available without supporting hardware.

Why add a reactor to a long-duration mission?

Power when sunlight is limited

A reactor can generate electricity for spacecraft functions as well as support propulsion. NASA notes that solar power becomes impractical farther from the Sun. A nuclear-electric power system could therefore provide power for instruments, communications and other spacecraft needs in distant or low-light environments. The value is not limited to moving the spacecraft: electrical capacity can influence which instruments can operate and how much science and communication hardware a mission can support.

That benefit is conditional, not automatic. The spacecraft must still carry and integrate the reactor, conversion equipment, radiators and other supporting systems. Whether a mission can devote power and mass to particular instruments depends on its overall design. The relevant question is not simply whether a reactor can generate electricity, but whether the complete power system makes a useful mission possible.

Propulsion choices can affect payload and trajectory

NASA’s 2023 technical showcase describes modeled comparisons in which NTP or NEP can change payload and trajectory options. For selected Jupiter or Uranus mission cases, the authors estimate roughly 2.4–3.6 times more delivered payload with NTP than with a chemical-propulsion baseline. This is a mission-analysis result, not a flight measurement or a multiplier that applies to every destination. It depends on the modeled mission and its assumptions, including trip-time constraints.

That qualification matters when interpreting claims about faster journeys or larger payloads. A propulsion architecture may improve a particular mission analysis without being the best choice for another route. NTP and NEP also achieve their effects differently: one uses reactor heat directly for relatively high thrust; the other accepts low thrust in exchange for efficient, extended acceleration. No general claim that fission propulsion will get a spacecraft to Mars faster follows from the cited Jupiter and Uranus comparisons.

What has been tested, and what is still planned?

KRUSTY was a ground test, not a spacecraft flight

NASA and the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration conducted the Kilopower Reactor Using Stirling Technology (KRUSTY) experiment at the Nevada National Security Site. NASA reported a 28-hour full-power ground test that simulated startup, power ramp-up, steady operation and shutdown. The test also simulated conditions including reduced power, failed engines and failed heat pipes.

This is evidence that a small fission system completed a ground test under those conditions. It does not establish that a reactor has already supplied power to a spacecraft in flight. In a 2018 release, NASA described the Kilopower concept as capable of up to 10 kilowatts electric for at least 10 years. Those figures describe the capability NASA attributed to the concept at the time; they are not a record of ten years of space operation.

Space Reactor-1 Freedom is a planned flight demonstration

NASA’s current mission page describes Space Reactor-1 Freedom (SR-1) as a planned nuclear-electric propulsion pathfinder, with a target launch in 2028. The page lists a 20-kilowatt-electric closed Brayton conversion system, a spacecraft bus generating 48 kilowatts electric and a 12-kilowatt Hall thruster. These are published planned-vehicle values, not flight results. NASA’s October 8, 2026 news release also presents SR-1 as a future 2028 milestone; schedules and plans can change.

The figures identify different parts of the planned vehicle. They should be reported as NASA lists them, not treated as measured output or combined into a new performance claim. A planned demonstration can mark progress toward a flight system, but it cannot establish in advance how a completed spacecraft will perform on a mission.

Lunar fission surface power is a separate application

NASA says it is working with the Department of Energy and industry on a 40-kilowatt-class fission surface-power system for the Moon, targeted for the early 2030s. Its stated purpose is continuous power for lunar operations through periods or in locations with little sunlight. This is a surface-power project, not a spacecraft propulsion engine. It shares the use of fission energy with propulsion systems, but a lunar surface power plant should not be described as an engine for an interplanetary spacecraft.

What are the safety and engineering constraints?

A flight system has to manage the reactor alongside launch conditions, operation in space, heat and radiation. NASA identifies operating temperatures at or above 1,700 °F for nuclear-electric systems and 4,800 °F for nuclear-thermal systems. Those are agency-stated system thresholds, not a complete thermal specification for every proposed design. The figures help explain why high-temperature materials and the full thermal architecture are central engineering concerns.

Safety plans are specific to a system and mission. NASA says nuclear propulsion systems would not be activated until the spacecraft was far enough from Earth to guarantee safe operation, and that spacecraft would be placed in orbits with decay times long enough for radioactivity to fall to safe limits. A separate environmental assessment for the DRACO mission describes approaches including preventing inadvertent criticality before operation and using a sufficiently high test orbit. These are agency-described design measures for the configurations at issue, not proof that risk is zero or that every future mission will use identical procedures.

The operational sequence and the spacecraft’s path are therefore part of the safety case, not details that can be separated from the reactor. A design must account for when a reactor is activated and how the mission manages its orbit. Those choices have to be assessed for the mission configuration in question; the existence of a safety plan does not justify making a blanket claim that all nuclear propulsion systems have the same risk profile.

What can be concluded today?

Fission could give long-duration spacecraft a source of energy for propulsion and onboard electricity, but the two propulsion paths solve different problems. NTP uses heat directly for relatively high thrust; NEP converts heat to electricity for efficient, sustained, low-thrust acceleration. Both approaches require a spacecraft designed around the reactor and its supporting systems.

The evidence described by NASA spans a ground-tested small reactor system, published mission analyses and planned future demonstrations. KRUSTY’s test is not a flight deployment; SR-1 Freedom and lunar surface power remain plans with target dates. Claims about payload or mission advantages should stay tied to the modeled cases that support them, rather than being treated as guaranteed outcomes for every destination.
