Nobel Prize candidates are nominated by people qualified under the rules for the relevant prize; self-nominations are not accepted. Nobel Committees check nominations, assess candidates and may consult experts, then submit reports or recommendations to the prize-awarding institution. That institution—not nominators, experts or the public—makes the final decision. Nominee names and evaluation materials are confidential for 50 years.
Who can nominate someone for a Nobel Prize?
A nomination must come from someone eligible under the rules for that particular prize. Nobel Prize Outreach describes potential nominators as including academics, members of academies, previous laureates and parliamentarians, among others. The list is not a universal checklist: qualifications differ among prize categories, and the relevant rules determine who may submit a nomination.
For most prizes, eligible nominators receive invitations from the committee. The Peace Prize has a broader pool of people who may nominate without an invitation than the other prizes. That difference is one reason a general list of possible nominators should not be treated as exhaustive or applied to every category. A person considering a nomination needs to check the rules for the specific prize and year.

Self-nominations are not accepted
Candidates cannot nominate themselves. A nomination must be submitted by a qualified nominator, and it must meet the requirements for the prize concerned. Being prominent, having public support or being nominated by someone who is not qualified does not substitute for eligibility under those rules.
This also means that public campaigns, petitions or expressions of support should not be mistaken for a formal nomination. They may express admiration for a person or their work, but the official process depends on a nomination submitted by a qualified person under the relevant category’s rules.
More nominations do not establish a prediction
A nomination puts a candidate into the process for that year’s prize; it is not a public vote or a measure that can be converted into a reliable forecast. The official process descriptions explain how committees review candidates, but they do not provide a formula that predicts the winner from nomination totals. A person may be nominated more than once or in different years, but repeat nominations do not, by themselves, establish that the person is more likely to receive the prize.
Nomination totals are not a public scorecard for comparing candidates. Even if a number is claimed publicly, it does not show how the committee will assess the candidate or what the prize-awarding institution will decide. The evaluation has multiple stages, and the process does not publish a prediction formula based on how many nominators put forward a name.
What happens after a nomination is submitted?
The shared outline is a sequence of validation, assessment and a final institutional decision. Committees manage the evaluation and narrow the field; expert advisers may help them examine selected candidates. The exact procedures vary somewhat among prizes, so this outline describes the common structure rather than claiming that every committee follows identical steps.
- Check the nomination. The committee checks whether a nomination is valid, including whether it came from someone qualified to nominate for that prize. A candidate’s reputation or public support does not make an otherwise ineligible nomination valid.
- Compile and assess the nominations. The committee considers the eligible candidates and narrows the field as the evaluation proceeds. A nomination starts consideration for that year’s prize, but does not guarantee that a candidate will reach a later stage.
- Seek expert assessments where appropriate. Committees may ask domestic or foreign experts to assess finalists. Official pages for the Physics and Literature committees describe the use of expert assistance; the specific advice and procedure depend on the prize. Expert assessments contribute to the process but do not replace the prize-awarding institution’s final authority.
- Prepare a report or recommendation. After its assessment, the committee presents its work to the relevant prize-awarding institution. The committee carries out evaluation work and makes a report or recommendation; the final choice is made by the institution responsible for the prize.
- Make the award decision. The prize-awarding institution decides who receives the prize. The committee’s evaluation informs the process, but the institution makes the final choice.
These stages distinguish nomination from selection. Nominators put forward candidates; committees evaluate them; experts can contribute assessments; and the prize-awarding institution decides. A nomination is therefore not an endorsement that guarantees a place in a final shortlist or an award.

The stages also explain why it is misleading to treat the process as a simple popularity contest. A valid nomination is an initial entry into consideration, followed by committee work and, in some cases, specialist advice. The number of nominations alone does not disclose the committee’s assessment, and the committee’s work does not itself constitute the final award decision.
Who chooses the Nobel laureates?
The prize-awarding institution for the relevant category makes the final decision. Nobel Committees handle candidate evaluation and selection work, but the decision belongs to the institution rather than to the nominators, the advisers or the public. The public announcement comes after that decision.
The Nobel Foundation’s statutes state: “No appeals may be made against the decision of a prize-awarding body with regard to the award of a prize.” In practical terms, the selection decision is final under the stated rules; there is no appeal process through which a candidate or nominator can challenge the award outcome.
The process therefore has distinct roles: qualified nominators submit names, committees assess candidates and can consult experts, and the prize-awarding body selects the laureate. Neither a nomination nor an expert assessment is itself the award. The public learns the result through the announcement after the institution has decided.
Economic Sciences has a distinct origin
The Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel is presented at the same ceremony as the Nobel Prizes, but it has a distinct institutional origin. Sveriges Riksbank instituted it in 1968, and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awards it under special statutes that follow Nobel Prize rules where relevant. It should not be described as one of the original prizes established by Alfred Nobel’s will.

This distinction matters when describing who awards the prize and how its legal basis relates to the other categories. Its shared ceremony and connection to Nobel Prize rules do not erase the fact that it was instituted by Sveriges Riksbank and is governed by special statutes. When comparing categories, it is more accurate to identify the responsible institution and applicable rules than to assume every prize has the same institutional history.

When does the annual nomination and selection process happen?
The broad annual schedule runs from invitations in September to an announcement usually in early October. The deadline and statutory wording should be kept distinct: Nobel Prize Outreach’s Nobel Week 2025 media information gives 31 January as the submission deadline for that process cycle, while the Nobel Foundation statutes describe annual adjudication as embracing nominations submitted during the preceding twelve months up to 1 February.
| Stage | Usual timing | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Invitations | September | Committees send invitations to eligible nominators. The public process overview says nomination processes start in September. |
| Submission deadline | 31 January in the Nobel Week 2025 media information | Nominators submit candidates by the operational deadline stated for that cycle. |
| Statutory annual period | Up to 1 February, in the statutes’ wording | The statutes describe the nominations embraced by annual adjudication. This is close to, but not identical in wording to, the 31 January operational deadline. |
| Evaluation | February through early October | Committees check eligibility, compile nominations, narrow the field, seek expert assessments for finalists where appropriate and prepare reports. |
| Decision and announcement | Usually early October for the public announcement | The prize-awarding institution makes its decision; the announcement follows. |
The 31 January date is tied to the 2025 Nobel Week media information, not a promise that every future cycle will use the same published deadline. For a nomination in a particular year, the relevant prize’s current official instructions are the appropriate place to confirm the deadline and eligibility requirements.
The dates describe different parts of the schedule rather than a contradiction that can be collapsed into one phrase. September marks the start of the nomination process and invitations; 31 January is the operational submission deadline stated in the 2025 media information; and the statutes use 1 February as the upper limit in their description of the annual adjudication period. For practical purposes, nominators should follow the applicable year’s published instructions rather than infer a deadline from statutory wording alone.

Why are current nomination lists not public?
Nominee names are not disclosed until 50 years later. The confidentiality rule also covers more than names. Under the Nobel Foundation statutes, proposals, investigations and opinions may not be divulged, and materials used in evaluation and decision may not be made available until at least 50 years after the decision.
That means a claim that someone is a current nominee cannot be verified through an official public list. A nominator’s public statement or outside speculation does not turn a name into an official, publicly confirmed nomination. The confidentiality period protects the nomination and evaluation record, not merely the identity of the eventual laureate before the announcement.

The rule applies to the record of the process, including proposals and the material used to investigate and evaluate candidates. It is therefore not enough for a claim to sound plausible or to come from someone who says they submitted a name: that does not make an official current nominee list public. Readers should distinguish public commentary from information disclosed by an authorized official source.

The 50-year period is not a short embargo ending at the annual announcement. The statutes refer to at least 50 years after the decision for materials used in evaluation and decision, while Nobel Prize Outreach says nominee names cannot be revealed until 50 years later. Until then, the public cannot consult the confidential nomination file to confirm who was considered.
How the rules differ by prize
The common process does not mean every category has the same nominator pool, committee procedure or institutional basis. The distinctions below are the ones established in the official process material; they are not a complete category-by-category eligibility guide.
| Area | What the process establishes | What varies or needs checking |
|---|---|---|
| Nominators | Only qualified nominators may submit candidates; self-nominations are not accepted. | Eligibility is prize-specific. The Peace Prize allows a broader group to nominate without an invitation than the other prizes. |
| Committee assessment | Nobel Committees evaluate candidates, narrow the field and can use expert advisers. | Committee procedures may vary somewhat. Physics and Literature committee pages describe expert assistance, but no single identical procedure should be assumed for every category. |
| Final authority | The relevant prize-awarding institution makes the final award decision. | The responsible institution depends on the prize category. |
| Economic Sciences | The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awards the prize under special statutes that follow Nobel Prize rules where relevant. | It was instituted by Sveriges Riksbank in 1968 and is not one of the original prizes established by Alfred Nobel’s will. |
When comparing two prizes, the useful questions are who awards each one, which people qualify to nominate and whether an invitation is required, what committee or expert-assessment procedures are described, and what deadline applies in the relevant year. Shared features such as committee assessment and confidentiality do not make category-specific nomination rules interchangeable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What a nomination does—and does not—mean
A nomination is an entry into a confidential evaluation process, not a public contest in which the person with the most visible support wins. The committee checks the nomination and assesses the candidate alongside others. It may seek expert advice, then submits a report or recommendation to the institution that decides the award.
- It does mean: a qualified nominator has put forward the person for consideration for that year’s prize, subject to the rules and review process.
- It does not mean: the candidate has won, is guaranteed to be a finalist, or is ahead of other candidates by a publicly measurable score.
- It does not establish: an official public nomination record, because names and evaluation materials are kept confidential for 50 years.
For readers following a particular candidate, the most reliable public milestone is the official laureate announcement. Before then, statements about current nominees should be treated as unconfirmed unless they come from an official source authorized to disclose that information.

No. Self-nominations are not accepted. A candidate must be put forward by someone qualified under the rules for the relevant prize.
How are Nobel Prize winners chosen?
Nobel Committees check the validity of nominations, assess candidates, narrow the field and may consult experts. They submit reports or recommendations to the prize-awarding institution, which makes the final decision.

Nobel Prize Outreach says nominee names cannot be revealed until 50 years later. The Nobel Foundation statutes also restrict disclosure of proposals, investigations, opinions and materials used in evaluation and decision for at least 50 years after the decision.
When is the Nobel Prize nomination deadline?
The deadline depends on the relevant year’s instructions. Nobel Prize Outreach’s Nobel Week 2025 media information gives 31 January as the operational submission deadline for that cycle. The statutes separately describe annual adjudication as including nominations submitted up to 1 February.
Does getting more nominations make someone more likely to win?
Not according to any public prediction formula in the official process descriptions. Repeat nominations or a larger nomination total do not, by themselves, establish that a candidate is more likely to win.
