No Man’s Sky does not store a hand-built level for every planet. It uses deterministic procedural generation: a planet seed feeds rules, and the game turns the result into terrain, materials, life, structures and simulations as you approach. Artists define the visual vocabulary and constraints; algorithms vary and assemble those pieces.

That design explains both the game’s enormous scale and its performance demands. The same seed-driven universe can be resolved consistently across visits and platforms, but generating and rendering nearby objects at runtime requires more computation than displaying a completely static level.

The short version: a seed is an instruction, not a planet file

Every planet has a single random seed that defines its generated content. Sean Murray, founder of Hello Games, described it this way: “The cool thing is that every planet has a single number, a random seed, that defines everything about that planet.” He also said that a single seed can generate “every blade of grass, tree, flower, creature.”

The seed is therefore not a compressed, hand-authored map waiting on the disk. It is deterministic input to a collection of generation rules. Given the same relevant inputs and location, those rules can produce the same broad terrain shapes and the same categories and placement of content for different players or different visits. The game stores the machinery and building blocks needed to calculate the result rather than a separate finished level for every possible world.

“Deterministic” does not mean that every visible detail is permanently simulated everywhere. It means the generator can resolve a location predictably when the game needs it. Local simulation, platform settings and later updates can still affect what is rendered or how systems behave around the player.

What happens between a seed and a playable landscape?

Hello Games’ GDC description presents the production chain as voxel-based world generation → polygonization → texturing → population → simulation. Each stage answers a different technical problem.

Stage What it contributes Why it matters in play
Voxel-based world generation Builds a volumetric representation of the ground and other terrain information from deterministic inputs. Volumes can describe caves, cliffs and uneven surfaces rather than only flat, pre-modeled meshes.
Polygonization Converts the volumetric representation into polygon surfaces the renderer can draw. Turns mathematical terrain into visible, interactable ground as the player nears it.
Texturing Assigns materials and surface appearance to the generated geometry. Distinguishes rock, soil, vegetation and other environmental surfaces.
Population Places flora, fauna, structures and other content according to the rules. Makes a bare landform into an explorable ecosystem with points of interest.
Simulation Runs behaviors and continuing systems for the generated world. Controls interactions and activity after the content exists near the player.

The public session description does not disclose every algorithm or parameter. It does not establish a particular noise function, chunk dimension, seed encoding or complete memory budget, so those details should not be treated as official specifications.

Why voxels are useful

A voxel representation describes space as a volume instead of starting with a fixed artist-made surface. That gives the generator a basis for terrain that can include substantial changes in elevation and underground forms. Polygonization is the conversion step that makes this volumetric description suitable for a conventional real-time graphics pipeline.

Why the stages are separated

Separating shape, surface, content and behavior lets the same underlying terrain rules support many visual outcomes. A generated mountain can receive different materials, life and weather conditions without requiring a unique hand-modeled level. It also gives the engine a way to prioritize work: geometry, materials and nearby simulation can be prepared as the player moves.

Generation occurs while you explore

No Man’s Sky is designed to carry you from space toward a planet and into populated terrain without a conventional level-loading transition. The game must prepare the world ahead of and around the player quickly enough to preserve that continuous journey.

Murray explained that when a player walks around a planet or looks at a tree or leaf, “the computer is having some element of generation there to create that thing that’s in front of them.” This is why a generated tree is more expensive to create and render than an equivalent object in a fully static game: the system is doing computation, selecting or constructing content, and then drawing it while the game is running.

What is likely to be calculated locally

  • Terrain shape and the visible surface near the player.
  • Materials and environmental appearance for that surface.
  • Placement of plants, animals, structures and other population elements.
  • Weather, atmospheric effects and nearby behavior that need active simulation.

The exact scheduling, caching and subdivision strategy is not publicly specified. It is more accurate to say that the engine resolves and streams needed results as you move than to claim that an entire planet is generated in one operation.

How can the game have so many planets?

A conventional game might ship a finite set of authored maps, with storage devoted to geometry, textures, object placement and scripted encounters for each one. Procedural generation changes the storage problem. The game can keep a generator, deterministic inputs and reusable content patterns, then compute a particular result when required.

In a 2014 design post, Murray illustrated the scale with a 64-bit space of 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 possible planets. He also used the thought experiment of 585 billion years to discover them all at one planet per second. Those figures describe the design scale he published in 2014. They are not a claim that every one of those worlds has been visited, nor a guarantee that the current implementation is unchanged.

The important distinction is between possible outputs and stored files. The game does not need one planet-sized installation for every possible output because most of those outputs have never been requested. A seed and rules can represent a vast addressable space compactly, while only the local result needed for play is calculated and retained temporarily.

Does everyone see the same planet?

The deterministic design is intended to make the universe consistent. Murray said Xbox, PlayStation, PC and Switch can show the same terrain shapes and trees in the same places, while also acknowledging that there are some platform differences.

That means a location can be shared as a common reference: players can identify a planet and expect its major generated geography and vegetation to correspond. It does not mean that every pixel, effect or simulation state must match across hardware. Differences in graphics settings, performance budgets, update versions and platform-specific implementation can change detail, effects or how much activity is simulated nearby.

Consistency target What to expect
Seed-driven terrain and major placement Designed to resolve to the same broad shapes and locations across supported platforms.
Rendering quality Can vary with hardware, graphics settings and platform capabilities.
Atmospheric and weather effects May differ in fidelity or presentation when a platform has a different performance budget.
Nearby simulation Can be constrained by available CPU, memory and graphics resources.

What artists contribute to a procedural universe

Procedural does not mean “designed without artists.” Hello Games says the game is procedurally generated but still aims for a recognizable style “like a science fiction book cover come to life.” The studio credits its art team with establishing that identity.

Artists and designers supply authored assets, patterns and constraints: examples of spaceship design, creature types, materials, environmental motifs and rules about how those elements can combine. The generator then varies and assembles them across seeds and locations. Murray has described these authored patterns as useful “sparks” for the technology.

This collaboration solves a central procedural-design problem. Pure randomness tends to produce results that are technically different but aesthetically incoherent. A controlled vocabulary gives the generator boundaries, while variation prevents every landscape from looking like the same hand-built scene repeated.

Why performance differs between computers and consoles

Procedural generation moves part of the workload from storage into runtime computation. The engine must generate or resolve content, convert terrain into renderable geometry, apply materials, populate the scene and simulate nearby systems while also maintaining normal gameplay.

On a faster system, that work may complete with higher-resolution geometry, denser effects or more active objects. On a lower-power device, the same deterministic universe can remain recognizable while reducing visual fidelity, simulation scope or update speed. The relevant trade-offs are not simply “procedural versus non-procedural”; they are how much generation work can be performed, how much memory can hold nearby results, and how many effects can be rendered at once.

  • CPU capacity: affects rule evaluation, population and simulation.
  • GPU capacity: affects polygon rendering, materials, lighting and effects.
  • Memory: limits how much generated geometry, texture data and active simulation can remain available.
  • Storage and streaming: influence how quickly fixed assets and cached data can be supplied to the runtime pipeline.

The same seed does not guarantee identical frame rates. It guarantees a repeatable basis for generation; performance depends on the platform doing the work.

When the generator’s rules, assets or environmental systems are extended, familiar planets can present new kinds of detail without abandoning the seed-driven model. An update can change the vocabulary and behavior available to the pipeline even though the broader method—deterministic inputs producing content as needed—remains in place.

Common misconceptions, clarified

“Every planet is a prebuilt map compressed into a seed.”

No. The seed is an input to rules and content building blocks. It allows repeatable generation; it is not a substitute for a complete authored level file.

“Procedural means the developers did not design anything.”

No. Artists define the recognizable science-fiction style, assets, patterns and constraints that the algorithms combine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“If two platforms use the same seed, every visual detail must be identical.”

No. The intended terrain and major placements can match while rendering quality, effects and nearby simulation differ with platform capabilities.

“The whole planet is generated before you land.”

The evidence supports generation as you explore. The engine creates or resolves elements in the player’s surroundings rather than requiring every possible detail to be built and stored in advance.

What this design means for explorers

  • You can revisit a location and expect its seed-driven identity to remain recognizable.
  • Coordinates and planet references are meaningful because the generator is deterministic.
  • A visually simple scene may still involve substantial runtime work behind the frame.
  • Seamless travel is possible because generation, polygonization, texturing, population and simulation are coordinated as the player approaches.
  • Major updates can expand the kinds of environments and effects the generator produces.

The result is a compromise: an enormous range of possible worlds and a coherent shared universe, purchased with ongoing computation and platform-dependent limits on detail.
