NMR thermometry can map temperature differences inside a chemical reactor, including regions that are hard to inspect through opaque reactor walls. It is not one universal thermometer: some methods measure a temperature-sensitive sample placed in the reactor, while others measure the gas phase directly. The usable temperature range and spatial detail depend on the particular method and reactor setup.
Why measure temperature inside a reactor?
A reactor can contain hotter and colder regions even when a sensor on its outside reports one temperature. Those internal differences can matter to chemical engineers assessing reactor performance. A 2013 Chemistry World report described NMR thermometry as a non-invasive way to examine hot and cold spots in reactors and support reactor improvement: NMR thermometer takes reactor’s temperature.
NMR—nuclear magnetic resonance—can provide temperature information from within an NMR-compatible experimental arrangement. The key distinction is what generates the temperature signal: a thermometer material placed in the reactor, or the gas being studied.
How an ethylene-glycol capillary measures temperature
In the University of Bremen dissertation method, fused glass capillaries filled with ethylene glycol were placed to measure temperatures along the axis and near the wall of monolithic catalysts. The separation between two ethylene-glycol NMR signals changes linearly with temperature in this implementation. By using capillaries as multipoint thermometers, the experiment could measure multiple locations and acquire temperature information alongside magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The dissertation reports a measurement range up to 165 °C for this particular capillary implementation. That figure is not a general limit for NMR thermometry. Because the capillary conducts heat, it can alter the temperature profile it is meant to measure; the study checked for distortion under a steep temperature gradient before use. The dissertation material is available through the University of Bremen repository.
How direct gas-phase NMR thermometry differs
A separate approach measures gas-phase temperature directly rather than relying on ethylene glycol inside a capillary. A 2022 Chemical Engineering Journal paper reports spatially resolved direct gas-phase thermometry in chemical reactors, including in-situ measurements above 350 °C. The study also reports comparing its approach with diffusion-coefficient-based NMR thermometry and measuring temperature and density simultaneously. Its abstract discusses potential use in heterogeneous gas-phase reactions; it does not establish compatibility with every reactor or reaction.

These reported capabilities belong to that study, not to NMR thermometry as a whole. See the paper’s abstract and publication details for the method and its scope.

Compare the methods by what they measure
| Question | Ethylene-glycol capillary method | Direct gas-phase study |
|---|---|---|
| What provides the temperature signal? | Ethylene glycol inside a fused glass capillary, as described in the University of Bremen dissertation. | The gas phase, as reported in the 2022 Chemical Engineering Journal paper. |
| What spatial information is reported? | Multipoint measurements using capillaries in the described setup, including along the catalyst axis and wall region. | Spatially resolved measurements, according to the paper’s abstract. |
| What temperature capability is reported? | Up to 165 °C for this dissertation’s implementation. | In-situ gas-phase measurements exceeding 350 °C in the 2022 study. |
| What integration details are established? | Used with MRSI in the reactor experiment; capillary heat conduction was considered. | An NMR-compatible reactor arrangement; the abstract does not provide all experimental details. |
| What should not be inferred? | That 165 °C is a universal NMR thermometry ceiling or that the capillary leaves every temperature profile unchanged. | That every reactor or reaction can be measured this way. |
What to check when evaluating a reactor thermometry setup
- Measurement target: Determine whether the method measures a thermometer sample or the reactor’s gas phase.
- Spatial resolution: Check whether it yields a single reading, multipoint readings, or spatially resolved data.
- Demonstrated range: Treat a temperature limit or capability as specific to the reported study and hardware, not as a general property of NMR.
- Reactor and instrument fit: Confirm how the measurement hardware fits the reactor and NMR system. A method demonstrated in one arrangement is not automatically transferable to another.
- Measurement disturbance: For an inserted probe such as a capillary, consider whether the probe itself conducts heat and affects the profile.
Why a standard NMR thermometer is not the same thing
“NMR thermometer” can also refer to a sample-temperature measurement and control system for an NMR instrument, rather than a method for mapping reactor hot spots. Bruker’s 2012 announcement for its AVANCE III HD system describes measuring the chemical-shift difference between two deuterium resonances; one signal supports field stabilization, while the difference is used with SmartVT for temperature measurement and control. Bruker claimed up to 50% faster online regulation and up to a factor-five improvement in signal-frequency accuracy for that system. Those are vendor-reported performance claims, not independent validation or evidence that this system was used in the reactor studies described above. The announcement is available from Bruker.
