Use an NJ TRANSIT timetable to plan the trip, then use DepartureVision, System Status, and trip alerts to check what is actually happening. The timetable answers which trains are scheduled between two stations on the applicable weekday or weekend. DepartureVision shows the latest departure-board information for a station, including listed times and tracks. The NJ TRANSIT app combines schedules, trip planning, real-time arrivals and departures, alerts, and (with an account) ticket management.
These tools complement one another rather than replacing one another. NJ TRANSIT does not publish a systemwide latency figure or an accuracy guarantee for estimated arrivals, so an “estimated” time should be treated as current operational information, not a promise.

Confusing these views is the main reason a rider can see a train in a timetable but not find it on the live board, or see a different time in the app. A timetable is a plan; the live tools reflect the latest information available to NJ TRANSIT.

How to read an NJ TRANSIT timetable
Choose the correct day type
NJ TRANSIT publishes station-to-station train and light-rail schedules for the current weekday or weekend. Start by selecting the day category that matches the date of travel. A weekday timetable should not be assumed to apply on Saturday, Sunday, or a holiday unless NJ TRANSIT presents that date under the same schedule type.
Set the origin and destination
Enter or select the station where you will board and the station where you will leave. The resulting schedule is organized around that station pair and the trains that serve it. If your journey involves a transfer, use the itinerary-planning function to see the proposed sequence rather than reading one station pair as if it represented the entire journey.
Interpret scheduled times as a baseline
The times in a timetable are scheduled departures and arrivals. They are useful for deciding which service you intend to take, estimating when to leave for the station, and comparing earlier or later options. They do not by themselves show a delay that developed after the timetable was published.
Check the service pattern, not just the clock time
Before committing to a train, verify that the listed service serves your destination. NJ TRANSIT’s live train view can show the stations served by an individual train, which is useful when several trains depart around the same time or when a route has different stopping patterns.

How DepartureVision differs from a timetable
DepartureVision is a station-based departure screen. NJ TRANSIT describes it as a way to view train departure screens, including arrival and departure times and track assignments, on a web-enabled mobile device or desktop computer.
What you see on the station screen
- The station’s currently listed train departures.
- Arrival or departure times associated with each listed train.
- The track assignment shown by NJ TRANSIT.
Selecting an individual train can provide the stations it serves. Commuter guidance also describes stop-by-stop estimated arrivals and track information, so opening the train record is more informative than relying only on the first line of the station board.
Why the board can differ from your printed plan
A timetable may show the scheduled time for a train, while DepartureVision reflects a later operational update. A delay, a changed track, a service adjustment, or the fact that a train has already departed can make the two views look different. Use the timetable to identify the service you want; use the station board immediately before boarding to check its current listing.

What does not require sign-in
Schedule browsing and trip planning are available without an account. That makes the app useful for a quick departure check or for planning a journey before deciding whether to create a login.
What does require an account
NJ TRANSIT’s app guidance says an account is required for ticket purchasing, ticket storage, and ticket management. If you only need timetable or real-time information, sign-in is not required; if you need to buy or manage tickets in the app, create or use the required account.
A practical app workflow
- Open the trip-planning or schedule function.
- Choose the origin and destination stations.
- Select the applicable weekday or weekend service.
- Review the proposed trains and scheduled times.
- Before leaving, open the real-time arrivals or departures for your boarding station.
- Open the selected train, when available, to inspect its stops, estimates, and displayed track.
- Check System Status and any relevant alerts for conditions that could affect the trip.

How to check a train in real time
Before leaving home
- Plan the trip with the station-to-station schedule for the correct day type.
- Record the planned departure time and the train’s destination or service pattern.
- Open DepartureVision or the app’s real-time departure view for the boarding station.
- Compare the live listing with the scheduled train. Look for a changed time, a displayed track, or an operational note.
- Open the train listing to inspect intermediate stops and estimated arrivals when that information is available.
- Review System Status for network-wide disruptions and My Transit Alerts for notifications tied to your selected trips.
At the station
Check the station-based departure information again, because the displayed track or estimate may have changed since you planned the trip. Follow the station’s posted instructions if the live information conflicts with an older screenshot, saved timetable, or message from another rider. A displayed track is the current listing, but NJ TRANSIT does not publish a blanket guarantee that a track or estimate cannot change.

Use the selected train’s stop-by-stop estimates to judge when to prepare to exit. If Arrival Alerts are enabled, the app can notify you when the train comes within one-quarter mile of your destination and again when it arrives. Keep the app’s notifications enabled if you depend on those notices.

How NJ TRANSIT alerts work
My Transit Alerts: targeted notifications
My Transit Alerts is designed for trips or lines you select. It is the more focused option when you want notifications connected to your own travel plans rather than every condition on the system. NJ TRANSIT documents app delivery and also describes text and email alert options.
System Status: broad awareness
System Status is the app’s broader service view. Use it when you want to know whether a network-level or major service condition could affect a journey, including one you have not saved as a personalized alert.
Delay thresholds are not one universal number
NJ TRANSIT’s official information pages describe delay-alert timing differently. The Stay Connected page identifies delays of 15 minutes or more as an alert category, while a separate commuter page presents a different delay window. Because those descriptions do not establish one universal threshold for every alert configuration, rely on the current alert setup and live service information instead of assuming that an alert will always arrive at a particular minute mark.

What “real-time” does—and does not—promise
“Real-time” indicates that the app or DepartureVision is intended to present current operational information, such as a listed departure, track, or estimated arrival. The official material does not publish a systemwide update-latency figure, an accuracy percentage, or a guarantee that an estimated arrival will match the eventual arrival.

- Do not assume an estimate refreshes every fixed number of seconds.
- Do not treat an estimated arrival as a guaranteed arrival time.
- Do not assume a displayed track is permanently fixed.
- Do not infer that a missing alert means service is on time; check the station view and System Status.
These limits matter most when making a tight connection, deciding when to leave home, or meeting someone at a station. Build reasonable time into the plan and recheck the live view as the departure approaches.
Troubleshooting common schedule and alert problems
The timetable shows a train, but DepartureVision does not
Confirm that you selected the correct station and the correct weekday or weekend schedule. Then check whether the train’s scheduled departure has already passed, whether the live board is showing a different service period, or whether a service adjustment is posted in System Status. The timetable remains the planned reference; the live board is the better source for the station’s current departures.
The track changed
Refresh the station-based departure view and check the station’s current display. Track assignments can be updated operationally, so use the latest listing rather than a saved itinerary or earlier screenshot.

The estimated arrival is missing or looks different
Open the individual train listing, verify the train and destination, and check again later. An estimate is operational information, not a published accuracy guarantee. If the wider service may be affected, review System Status and relevant alerts.
You received no personalized notification
Verify that the trip or line is selected in My Transit Alerts, that app notifications are permitted on the device, and that you are checking the current alert configuration. Since NJ TRANSIT’s pages describe differing delay windows, absence of a message should not be interpreted as proof that no delay exists.
You want to plan but do not want an account
Use the app or schedule pages for timetable viewing and trip planning without signing in. An account becomes necessary when you want to purchase, store, or manage tickets in the app.
A reliable decision sequence for every trip
- Plan: select origin, destination, and the correct weekday or weekend schedule.
- Identify: note the train’s scheduled departure, destination, and any transfer shown by the itinerary.
- Verify: check DepartureVision or the app for the boarding station’s current departure and track.
- Investigate: open the train to review its stops and estimated arrivals.
- Broaden: read System Status for network-wide conditions.
- Personalize: enable My Transit Alerts for selected trips or lines when you want notifications.
- Monitor: check again at the station and during the ride, especially when a connection or arrival time matters.
This sequence separates scheduled information from changing operational information without requiring a separate tool for every question.
