In brief: A Nintendo Switch eShop sale is a temporary, title-specific price shown on the game’s store page. You can pay that price with eShop funds and, when the title qualifies, reduce the balance with existing Gold Points. Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers are no longer sold: purchases ended at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time on January 30, 2026, but an unexpired voucher set can still cover eligible games for 12 months after its purchase. The best option depends on the live price, your points’ expiration dates, the voucher catalog, your account region, and whether the game is for Switch or Switch 2.

How a Nintendo Switch eShop sale works

Sales are not a separate checkout system. Nintendo changes the price of a particular digital title for a stated promotion period, and the eShop page for that title displays the price and payment choices available in your country. Prices, dates and even eligibility can differ by country, currency, publisher and promotion.

Check the game’s own purchase page

Open the game in Nintendo eShop and read the purchase panel rather than relying on a sale list or a third-party price. Nintendo’s purchase guide shows that the choices depend on the title’s release status and eligibility:

  • A released game may show a direct download purchase.
  • An unreleased game may show a pre-order option instead.
  • An eligible game may show a Nintendo Switch Game Voucher redemption option.
  • Eligible digital content may allow Gold Points to be applied at checkout.

The page also establishes the currency and account region being used. A discount advertised in one country does not guarantee the same price or dates in another.

What happens at checkout

  1. Select the sale-priced game or DLC and continue to payment.
  2. If Gold Points are available for that item, choose how many points to apply. The eShop shows the points’ value and the remaining balance.
  3. Pay the remainder with eShop funds or another payment method offered for your account.
  4. Review the final total, title, edition and region before confirming. A sale can end while you are comparing options.

Gold Points reduce an eligible purchase balance; they are not a separate sale price. A voucher redemption is different: it exchanges one voucher for one eligible game and generally does not receive an additional sale or promotion discount.

Gold Points: what still works in 2026

Nintendo stopped awarding Gold Points for digital-content purchases at 9:30 p.m. PDT on March 24, 2025. The former 5% earning rate is historical information, not a current benefit for buying a digital Switch game or DLC. Points you already have can still be spent on eligible content until each batch expires.

Eligible uses

Existing points can generally be applied to eligible digital games and DLC. Nintendo also lists Nintendo Switch Online membership as an eligible use where that option is available for the account. They cannot be used for passes, automatic renewals, in-game items or virtual currency. The eShop identifies whether the particular item accepts points before payment.

How expiration is calculated

Each batch remains valid through the last day of the month 12 months after it was earned. For example, points earned on March 24 expire on March 31 of the following year. Nintendo has illustrated the rule with a March 24, 2026 earning date and a March 31, 2027 expiration; because digital purchases no longer earn points after March 24, 2025, apply the same month-end calculation to points you actually hold from an earlier qualifying source.

Check the Gold Points balance screen for the individual expiration dates. Spending points that expire sooner prevents a later-expiring balance from being used first by accident.

$50 Nintendo eShop Gift Card [Digital Code]
  • This item can be redeemed on eShop only. This item cannot be redeemed on the Wii Shop
  • The perfect gift for anyone who loves to play—including you. Choose from over 1,000 new, classic and indie games – delivered directly to your Nintendo Switch, Wii U or Nintendo 3DS family of systems.
  • Nintendo eShop Digital Cards are redeemable only through the Nintendo eShop on the Nintendo Switch, Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS family of systems.
  • Digital Card balances can be shared across Nintendo Switch, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family of systems, but may only be used on a single Nintendo eShop account.

Region and account restrictions

  • Points are tied to the currency region in which they were earned and cannot be transferred to another Nintendo Account.
  • They cannot be exchanged for cash or another currency.
  • Changing the Nintendo Account country to one that uses a different currency makes the points unavailable in that country.

If you change regions, do not assume a previously displayed balance will be usable until you return to the original currency region.

How to decide whether to spend Gold Points during a sale

Compare the live sale price with the value of the points that would expire before you are likely to make another eligible purchase. There is no new earning opportunity to replace spent points, so using them on a title you already want is usually more practical than preserving them indefinitely.

Use points when

  • The game or DLC accepts points and the balance has an approaching expiration date.
  • The sale price is already the lowest price you have found, so the points provide an additional checkout reduction.
  • You need to use a small remaining balance and the item’s final price is high enough to consume it.

Save points when

  • The item is not eligible, such as a pass, auto-renewal, in-game purchase or virtual currency.
  • A more expensive eligible game you genuinely plan to buy is likely to arrive before the points expire.
  • Using points now would force you to buy a title you do not want simply to avoid losing them.

The eShop shows the reduced balance before confirmation. Treat that final screen as the authoritative amount; point values and eligible products can vary by region.

Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers: availability and rules

Nintendo ended Game Voucher sales at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time on January 30, 2026. There is no current way to purchase a new set. A set bought by the deadline remains usable for 12 months from its purchase date, so the relevant expiration date is the date on the original transaction, not the date you first redeem one voucher.

Requirements for redemption

  • You need an active, paid Nintendo Switch Online membership when redeeming a voucher.
  • The voucher is tied to the Nintendo Account that purchased the set and cannot be transferred to another account.
  • Redeem it in the region in which it was purchased.
  • One voucher covers one game from Nintendo’s eligible catalog.
  • Switch 2-exclusive games are excluded, even if another Switch title appears in the catalog.

Vouchers cannot be returned, have no cash value and cannot be exchanged. Nintendo says they generally cannot be combined with another sale or promotion unless Nintendo specifically allows it.

Which voucher is used first

If your account has more than one unredeemed voucher, Nintendo uses the voucher that expires soonest. Before confirming a redemption, verify that the game is eligible and that the voucher will still be valid on the redemption date.

When a voucher is cheaper than paying a sale price

The original value proposition was buying a pair of vouchers for less than the regular prices of two eligible games. To test it, add the regular prices of the two games you would actually redeem and compare that total with what you paid for the voucher pair. Nintendo describes the promotional value as requiring both vouchers to be used on eligible games whose cumulative regular price exceeds the pair’s purchase price.

Option What determines your cost Important limitation
Live eShop sale The temporary price on the title page in your account’s country and currency The offer can end or differ by region and publisher
Gold Points Your existing point balance applied to eligible digital content Points expire, are region-limited and cannot pay for excluded items
Legacy Game Voucher The pair’s purchase price allocated across two eligible redemptions Sales generally do not stack; vouchers expire 12 months after purchase

A practical comparison example

Suppose a legacy voucher pair cost less than the regular prices of two games you planned to buy. If both games are still eligible and neither voucher is near expiration, redeeming them can preserve the intended discount. If one of those games is currently on sale for less than the voucher pair’s effective per-game cost, paying cash for the sale is cheaper and keeps the voucher for another eligible game. Do this comparison with the current eShop prices immediately before redemption; a regular-price comparison can overstate the benefit during a deep sale.

Why redeeming one voucher can reduce flexibility

A voucher set is most valuable when both redemptions are used on games with high combined regular prices. Redeeming one for a low-priced title may leave the second voucher with little opportunity to outperform future sales. Conversely, waiting too long risks expiration. Check the catalog, current sale prices and remaining validity together rather than treating a voucher as an automatic discount.

Switch versus Switch 2 considerations

Platform eligibility matters separately from price. A voucher cannot redeem a Switch 2-exclusive game. A title that runs on Switch and is listed in the eligible catalog may still be redeemable, but the purchase page is the final authority for your account and region. Do not infer voucher eligibility from a game’s franchise, physical edition or compatibility label alone.

Funding an eShop purchase

If your account needs more funds after applying points, you can add money through an accepted payment method or a Nintendo eShop gift card. Nintendo’s published brochure lists €15, €25 and €50 card denominations. Denominations, delivery type, currency and availability depend on the reader’s country and the seller, so confirm those details before purchasing a card. A card must match the account’s region and currency requirements; it does not bypass a title’s sale, point or voucher eligibility rules.

Common problems and fixes

“I cannot earn Gold Points on my new digital purchase.”

That is expected. Digital-content earning ended on March 24, 2025. You can only spend an existing balance on items that still accept points.

“My Gold Points disappeared after changing countries.”

Points are currency-region limited. Changing the Nintendo Account country to a different currency makes them unavailable there. Return to the original currency region only if doing so complies with Nintendo’s account rules, and check the balance again.

“The game is on sale, but I cannot redeem a voucher.”

Check four conditions: the voucher has not passed its 12-month expiration, the game is in the eligible catalog, the game is not Switch 2-exclusive, and your paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is active. Also verify that the voucher was purchased in the same region in which you are trying to redeem it.

“The voucher costs more than the sale.”

Do not redeem it automatically. Compare the current cash sale price with the voucher pair’s effective per-game cost and consider whether another eligible game can provide better value before the voucher expires. Voucher redemptions generally cannot receive the sale price as an additional discount.

“I have two vouchers with different dates.”

Nintendo uses the closest-expiring voucher first. Confirm the displayed expiration and the selected game before completing the redemption.

A checkout checklist

  • Confirm the title, edition, platform and account region on the live eShop page.
  • Record the sale price and promotion end date.
  • Check whether the item accepts Gold Points and review the expiration dates of your balance.
  • If using a legacy voucher, confirm the set’s purchase date, catalog eligibility, Switch-versus-Switch-2 status and your paid Nintendo Switch Online membership.
  • Compare the cash sale price with the voucher’s effective value before selecting redeem.
  • Review the final total and payment method before confirming; completed voucher redemptions are not transferable or refundable.

What changed, at a glance

Feature Current position Expiration or timing rule
eShop sale pricing Available only when a publisher’s promotion is live for the title and region Ends according to the offer shown on the title page
Gold Point earning on digital content Discontinued March 24, 2025 at 9:30 p.m. PDT Existing points last until the last day of the month 12 months after earning
Gold Point spending Still available for eligible digital games, DLC and, where offered, Nintendo Switch Online membership Not valid for passes, auto-renewals, in-game items or virtual currency
Game Voucher purchases Ended January 30, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time Sets bought by the deadline last 12 months from purchase
Game Voucher redemption One eligible game per voucher, with an active paid Nintendo Switch Online membership Region-bound, account-bound and unavailable for Switch 2-exclusive games

The safest way to minimize your cost is to use the title’s live purchase page as the decision point: apply expiring Gold Points when the item qualifies, reserve a legacy voucher for an eligible game whose current cash price does not beat its effective value, and verify region, platform, membership and expiration before confirming.
