Nintendo Switch eShop discounts are store promotions applied to selected digital games or downloadable content for a limited time. They are separate from My Nintendo Gold Point redemptions, Nintendo eShop Cards, and purchase-linked promotional download codes. To know what you will actually pay, check the title’s price and sale end date in your own country’s Nintendo eShop, then confirm whether you are using a sale price, eligible existing points, or money added to your account.
What a Nintendo Switch eShop sale actually is
Nintendo says digital software is often discounted through Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Store. A sale changes the price displayed for an eligible title during the promotion. It does not mean every game is discounted, that the same promotion appears in every country, or that a sale is active whenever you visit the store.

Open the game’s product page while signed in to the Nintendo Account and region you will use for the purchase. The page shows the price available to that account and, when applicable, the promotion’s end date. Prices, currencies, eligible products and end times can differ by regional storefront, so a price seen in another country is not a reliable guide to your checkout total.

The four ways a purchase can look cheaper
These mechanisms are easy to confuse, but they affect a transaction differently.
| Mechanism | What it changes | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| eShop sale price | The store lists an eligible game or DLC at a promotional price for a limited period. | Your regional product page, final price and sale end date. |
| My Nintendo Gold Points | Previously earned points can cover value toward an eligible digital game or DLC; you pay any remainder. | Point balance, product eligibility, currency rules and expiration date. |
| Nintendo eShop Card | Adds funds to the account or purchase; it does not by itself lower the listed game price. | That the card is valid for your country and account currency. |
| Purchase-linked promotional download code | Provides a code associated with a qualifying purchase or offer, rather than a universal discount on any title. | The purchasing account’s history and receipt email, plus the offer’s own terms. |
Do not assume that points, a code or another offer automatically combines with a sale. The applicable regional terms decide whether mechanisms can be used together.
How to decide whether a sale is worth buying
1. Start with the correct storefront
Use the Nintendo Account and country setting associated with the Switch system or Nintendo Store account that will complete the transaction. Currency, taxes, payment methods, title availability and promotional terms are regional. A sale advertised for one country may not exist, may end at a different time, or may show a different price in another storefront.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2. Read the product page, not just a banner
Check the current price for the exact edition you want, whether the item is a full game or DLC, and the date and time the promotion ends when the store supplies one. A banner can advertise a campaign while individual titles have different eligibility or end dates.
3. Calculate the amount you will fund
Record the sale price in your local currency. Then decide whether an eligible Gold Point balance will cover part of it. If points do not cover the full amount, the checkout must use available account funds or another supported payment method for the remainder.
4. Check the purchase terms before confirming
Digital purchases can be subject to final-sale rules. Nintendo’s cited Americas web-purchase FAQ says sales are final, with a limited exception allowing a preorder cancellation before payment is processed and up to seven days before the game’s release. Those terms are specific to the cited Americas guidance; check the rules shown for your own country before paying.
Can you still earn My Nintendo Gold Points?
No. Nintendo announced that new Gold Points would stop being awarded at 9:30 p.m. PDT on March 24, 2025. The change applies to digital purchases, and physical games released after that date also no longer earn points. Do not treat an older explanation of a percentage earning rate as a current benefit.

$50 Nintendo eShop Gift Card [Digital Code]
- This item can be redeemed on eShop only. This item cannot be redeemed on the Wii Shop
- The perfect gift for anyone who loves to play—including you. Choose from over 1,000 new, classic and indie games – delivered directly to your Nintendo Switch, Wii U or Nintendo 3DS family of systems.
- Nintendo eShop Digital Cards are redeemable only through the Nintendo eShop on the Nintendo Switch, Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS family of systems.
- Digital Card balances can be shared across Nintendo Switch, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family of systems, but may only be used on a single Nintendo eShop account.
Previously earned points did not become permanently available. Nintendo’s notice says they remain valid for 12 months after issuance, subject to the program terms. By 2026, a balance may therefore contain points with different expiration dates or no usable points at all. Check the balance and expiration information in your My Nintendo account before relying on it.
How Gold Points can reduce an eligible purchase
Eligibility comes first
Nintendo says Gold Points can be redeemed toward eligible digital games and DLC. Eligibility is a product rule, not a guarantee that every eShop item accepts points. A title can be on sale and still have separate rules governing point redemption.
Currency and country restrictions
The redemption value depends on the currency in which the points were earned. Nintendo also says points can be used only in countries that use the same currency as the country where those points were earned. Moving an account or shopping in a different currency does not automatically make the balance transferable.

Applying points at checkout
- Sign in to the Nintendo Account holding the points and select the eligible digital game or DLC.
- At checkout, review the available Gold Point balance and choose the point-redemption option if it is offered for that product and region.
- Confirm how much value the points contribute and how much remains to pay.
- Use available account funds or another supported payment method for the remainder, then review the final total before confirming.
The checkout screen is the practical test of eligibility. If the points option is absent, do not assume that refreshing, changing payment methods or buying an eShop Card will make the title eligible.
Can points be used on a sale game?
Possibly, but the available material does not establish a universal stacking rule. A sale price and point redemption are different mechanisms, and product, account, currency and regional terms control whether they can be used together. Check the checkout total and the terms for that title rather than assuming every discounted game accepts points or that every point balance can be applied to a sale.
Do Nintendo eShop Cards give you a discount?
No. An eShop Card is a funding method. Nintendo’s purchase guidance lists eShop Cards among the ways to add money for a purchase, but it does not say that loading a card reduces a game’s listed price.
A card can still be useful when you want to set aside a fixed amount, do not want to use another payment method, or need funds to cover the portion left after an eligible point redemption. The economic benefit comes from the sale or points, if either applies—not from the card itself.

Where to find a purchase-linked promotional download code
Some Nintendo eShop purchases include a promotional download code tied to that particular purchase. This is different from a general discount code that can be entered for any game.
Nintendo says to look in two places:
- The Nintendo Account purchase history for the account that made the purchase.
- The receipt email sent for that transaction.
Account activity history can reach back two years under Nintendo’s support instructions. Search the purchasing account, not a different family member’s account, and check the email address associated with that transaction. A code may have its own product, region, redemption or expiration conditions, so read the offer details before attempting to redeem it.
If the code is missing
- Confirm that the transaction completed rather than remaining pending or canceled.
- Open the purchase history for the exact Nintendo Account used at checkout.
- Search the receipt mailbox, including spam or filtered folders.
- Check whether the purchase qualified for the promotion and whether the code is limited to a particular region.
- Contact Nintendo support with the transaction details if the offer terms say a code should have been supplied.
What direct Nintendo purchases cover in the Americas
Nintendo’s cited North American web-purchase FAQ covers digital purchases on Nintendo.com in these countries:
- Argentina
- Brazil
- Canada
- Chile
- Colombia
- Mexico
- Peru
- United States
The same FAQ requires a Nintendo Account and says the account must previously have accessed Nintendo eShop on a Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch system. These requirements and country listings come from the Americas guidance and should not be generalized to every region.
The FAQ also states that sales are final, while describing the limited preorder cancellation exception before payment is processed and up to seven days before release. Local consumer and transaction rules may differ elsewhere, so use the terms displayed for your storefront as the controlling information.

When more than one purchase route is available, compare the routes using the same criteria:
- Final regional price: Use the amount displayed in your currency at checkout, not a foreign listing or an old screenshot.
- Mechanism: Identify whether the reduction is a sale, existing points or another promotion.
- Eligibility: Check the game or DLC, account and currency restrictions.
- Seller and delivery: Distinguish a direct Nintendo purchase from a retailer-issued code, which may have separate delivery and redemption conditions.
- Refund and cancellation terms: Review the rules before confirming, especially for preorders.
- Promotion conditions: Verify any stated qualifying purchase, code location, expiration or regional limitation.
This checklist prevents a common mistake: treating an account balance or a promotional code as if it were an additional percentage discount. Only the terms attached to the transaction establish the saving.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Expecting every game to be discounted
Sales are title-specific and regional. Open the product page for the exact game and confirm the end date instead of relying on a general sale announcement.

New Gold Points stopped being awarded at the March 24, 2025 cutoff. Check the existing balance and each point’s 12-month validity period instead.
Assuming an eShop Card is cheaper money
The card adds funds; it does not establish a lower game price. Compare the listed game price and checkout total separately from the funding source.
Trying a generic coupon code
Nintendo says there are currently no discount codes for Nintendo Store purchases. A code you receive may be a purchase-linked promotional download code, not a universal coupon.
Using points earned in another currency
Points are restricted to countries using the same currency as the country where they were earned. Verify the currency relationship before planning the purchase.
Checking the wrong account for a code or balance
Purchase-linked codes appear in the purchasing account’s history and receipt email. Gold Points also belong to the account that earned them; switching profiles can make a valid balance or code appear missing.
Bottom line for a sale-day decision
Check the regional eShop listing first, record the sale price and end date, and then inspect your existing Gold Point balance. A qualifying balance may reduce an eligible digital game or DLC, but only under the same-currency and product rules; new purchases no longer earn Gold Points. An eShop Card funds the transaction rather than discounting it, and any promotional download code is tied to the qualifying purchase and found in the purchasing account’s history or receipt email. Confirm the final checkout total and your region’s cancellation terms before you select Buy.
