Nintendo Switch eShop discounts are temporary, region-specific offers on selected digital games and downloadable content. The price, eligible product and end date depend on the Nintendo Account country setting and the live listing in that country’s store. A digital purchase is associated with the Nintendo Account that paid for it; it is not a transferable copy that can be moved to another account.
On current Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 systems, Nintendo manages digital access through virtual game cards. A purchasing account can have up to two consoles that load those cards. When a card is loaded on a console, any user on that console can play the game, including offline. A different console may allow the purchasing account to play under Nintendo’s online conditions, but other profiles on that console cannot use the title.

What a Nintendo eShop discount actually means
A discount is an offer attached to one product, one Nintendo eShop region and one promotion period. Nintendo regularly runs sales through Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Store, but it does not promise a fixed calendar, discount percentage or price for a particular game. A title can be discounted in one country and full-price in another, or have a different end date.

Nintendo eShop follows the account’s country setting, so a price seen on a different country’s website may not apply to your account. The listing should be treated as the authority for the current price, currency, eligible edition, included content and sale end date.

How to check a sale before paying
- Open Nintendo eShop on the intended Switch or Switch 2 console, or use Nintendo’s store for the same Nintendo Account country.
- Open the game’s product page and confirm the exact edition. Deluxe, bundle and standard editions can have different prices and downloadable content.
- Check the displayed sale price and the promotion’s end date. Do not rely on an old screenshot, search result or social-media post.
- Confirm that the account country and currency are correct, especially if the console or account has recently been changed.
- Review the download size, required storage and any stated internet requirement before completing payment.
Nintendo’s discount-code guidance also matters: discount codes are currently unavailable for Nintendo Store purchases. A sale shown directly on a product page is therefore different from assuming that a separate code will reduce the price.
Why old sale percentages can mislead
Nintendo has advertised individual campaigns with language such as “Save up to 50% on select digital games & earn 5% in Gold Points* for your next purchase!” That wording belonged to a 2021 promotion. It demonstrates that a campaign can combine a temporary price reduction with reward terms; it is not a current discount promise or an average saving for Switch games.
What you receive when you buy a digital game
The practical meaning of “ownership” is account-based access. The Nintendo Account that completes the transaction is the account associated with the digital game or DLC. The purchase does not become an account-to-account asset that you can transfer to another person’s Nintendo Account.
Nintendo’s current Switch and Switch 2 guidance presents purchases as virtual game cards. The account can load a virtual game card on linked consoles, and the loading status determines who can play locally. Nintendo Support states: “A Nintendo Account can have up to two consoles that can load virtual game cards—when a virtual game card is loaded, any user account on the console can play it.”
How virtual game cards determine access
There are two different access situations. They should not be confused with unrestricted simultaneous sharing.

| Console situation | Who can play | Internet and profile conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Virtual game card loaded on one of the account’s linked consoles | Any user account on that console | The game can be played offline after it is loaded, subject to the normal console and software requirements. |
| Console cannot load the virtual game card under Nintendo’s specified conditions | The purchasing Nintendo Account | The console must be online for the account-based play; other users on that console cannot play the game. |
A Nintendo Account can link up to two consoles that load virtual game cards. This limit is about consoles that can load the cards, not a promise that the same purchase can be freely played by every profile on every console at the same time.
Example: one household, two consoles
Suppose the buyer loads a digital game’s virtual game card on the family’s main Switch. The buyer, a parent’s profile and a child’s profile on that console can play it, including when the console is offline. If the buyer also uses a second console that cannot load the card for that session, the buyer’s purchasing account may be able to start the game while online. A different profile on that second console cannot use the buyer’s purchase under that arrangement.

Example: moving access to another console
If you want another console’s profiles to use the game, the relevant virtual game card must be loaded on that console and it must be one of the consoles permitted by Nintendo’s account rules. Moving or loading the card changes where local multi-user access is available; it does not change which Nintendo Account bought the game.
Using digital games with family profiles
Before buying for a household, decide which console should provide shared access. Put the virtual game card on that console if multiple profiles need to play. If the purchasing account is the only profile that needs the game on another console, Nintendo’s online account-based option may work, but it requires the purchasing account to meet the online conditions and does not extend access to other users there.
- Shared console: load the virtual game card there so every user on that console can play.
- Personal secondary console: use the purchasing account under Nintendo’s stated online conditions when the card cannot be loaded there.
- Separate Nintendo Accounts: do not expect the purchase to transfer between accounts.
- Two-console planning: keep track of which consoles are linked and where each virtual game card is loaded.
Gold Points: a possible reduction, not a permanent discount
Eligible digital game and DLC purchases can use My Nintendo Gold Points toward payment. The value available to you depends on the points already in the account and the product’s eligibility at the time of purchase. Gold Points are separate from an eShop sale price: a game may be on sale, accept points, do both or do neither.

Existing points expire on the last day of the month 12 months after they are earned. For example, points earned during April expire on the last day of April in the following year. Check the My Nintendo points history and current balance rather than assuming that an older balance is still available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsNintendo has announced the discontinuation of earning Gold Points. That change affects whether new purchases generate points; it does not automatically erase points that have already been credited before their expiration date. Because eligibility and balances can depend on the account and the date, verify the current rules in My Nintendo before applying points.
Adding funds with an eShop card
Nintendo eShop cards add funds to a Nintendo Account for digital purchases. They can be useful when the account already has a balance or when someone is giving spending credit instead of a specific game. The card’s territory and redemption terms still matter: do not assume that a card bought in one country works in another country’s store. Confirm the card’s region, currency and validity before purchase and redemption.
Refunds and accidental purchases
For the United States, Nintendo’s digital-products policy says payments are final and non-refundable except when Nintendo authorizes an exception or applicable law requires one. A discounted price, an accidental purchase or downloading the game does not by itself create a guaranteed refund right.
This is a United States policy statement, not a universal rule for every territory. If your Nintendo Account is registered elsewhere, read the Nintendo terms that apply to that country or region. Contacting support may be appropriate when Nintendo’s policy identifies an authorized exception, but do not treat support contact as a promise that a refund will be approved.

Checks to make before confirming an eShop purchase
- Title and edition: verify the exact game, bundle, language and included DLC.
- Account: confirm that the Nintendo Account shown at checkout is the account that should retain the purchase.
- Country and currency: make sure the store matches the account’s country setting.
- Sale terms: record the displayed price and end date if you are deciding whether to buy now.
- Storage: check the download requirement and available console or microSD storage.
- Console plan: decide whether one profile, multiple profiles on one console or profiles on more than one console need access.
- Payment and recovery: remember that United States digital payments are generally final, subject to Nintendo-authorized exceptions and applicable law.
Digital purchase versus adding prepaid funds
These are different transactions. Buying a game immediately associates that title with the Nintendo Account used at checkout. Redeeming an eShop card adds a balance first; the account holder then chooses which eligible digital products to buy. Neither method changes the virtual game-card rules or turns a purchase into a transferable license.
| Choice | What happens immediately | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Buy a discounted digital game | The selected game is associated with the purchasing Nintendo Account, and its access follows virtual game-card rules. | Live regional price, edition, sale end date, storage and console-sharing needs. |
| Redeem an eShop card | Funds are added to the Nintendo Account for later digital purchases. | Country or region, currency, redemption validity and the account receiving the balance. |
Common problems and the right explanation
“The game is on sale, but my price is different.”
Check the Nintendo Account country and the live eShop listing. Promotions are selected, time-limited and region-specific; a listing from another country or an expired campaign does not establish your price.
“My other profile cannot play the game.”
Check whether the virtual game card is loaded on that console. Other profiles can play when the card is loaded there. If the console is using the purchasing account’s online access because it cannot load the card, Nintendo’s guidance limits play to the purchasing account.
“Can I give the game to another Nintendo Account?”
The purchase remains associated with the account that bought it. You can arrange access for users on a console where the virtual game card is loaded, but that is not a transfer of ownership to another account.
“Can I get my money back because I bought the wrong game?”
For a United States account, Nintendo describes digital payments as final unless an authorized exception or applicable law applies. Readers in other regions must use their local Nintendo terms.
Bottom line for buying during a sale
Use the live Nintendo eShop listing for your account’s country, and treat the displayed price and end date as the only reliable current offer details. Buy on the Nintendo Account that should retain the purchase. Plan console access before paying: load the virtual game card on one of up to two eligible consoles when multiple profiles need offline access, and do not assume that online account-based use on another console enables family sharing there. Apply Gold Points only after checking their balance, eligibility and expiration, and regard refunds as jurisdiction-specific rather than guaranteed.
