The Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con 2 charging grip charges the Joy-Con 2 controllers attached to it. It is a powered controller holder, not a battery bank: its USB-C port is an input, and Nintendo does not document it as a charger for the Switch 2 console, a phone or other USB devices.
You can power the grip from a Switch 2 dock with Nintendo USB charging cable BEE-016, or connect a compatible 5 V, 1.5 A (7.5 W) power adapter directly to the grip. The original Switch Joy-Con charging grip is not compatible with Joy-Con 2.
What the Switch 2 charging grip actually does
The Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con 2 charging grip combines two functions in one accessory. It holds a left and right Joy-Con 2 as a single, two-handed controller, and it supplies power to those controllers while they are attached. Nintendo also specifies that the grip enables use of the controllers’ GL and GR buttons.

The grip provides a different arrangement for people who want to play with the controllers held like a conventional gamepad, or who need to charge them without leaving them attached to the console. The grip itself has no stated internal battery, so it must remain connected to an external power source during charging.

What it can charge—and what it cannot
Attached Joy-Con 2 controllers
Charging the attached Joy-Con 2 pair is the grip’s documented purpose. Slide each controller fully into its corresponding side of the grip, connect power to the grip’s USB-C port, and the controllers can charge while held together. The grip does not need to be attached to the console for this function; it needs a permitted power source.
Not the Switch 2 console or other USB devices
Nintendo describes the USB-C connector as the charging grip’s power input. The published documentation does not describe power output for charging a Switch 2 console, smartphone, earbuds, power bank or another USB accessory. Treating the grip as a general-purpose USB charger could leave the other device unpowered and is outside its specified use.
The grip also is not a portable battery. Unplugged, it cannot continue charging the controllers because Nintendo does not specify an internal battery or a stored-energy mode.

Original Joy-Con controllers
Original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with a Switch 2, but they cannot physically attach to the Switch 2 console. Nintendo says an original Switch console or a compatible Joy-Con charging grip or charging stand is required to charge them. That requirement is separate from Joy-Con 2 compatibility.
Two supported ways to provide power
Nintendo documents two connection methods. Choose one; the grip does not require both at the same time.
| Power route | What you connect | Important requirement | What it powers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Switch 2 dock | USB charging cable BEE-016 from the grip to a USB port on the Switch 2 dock | The dock must be connected to the Switch 2 AC adapter and the USB-C cable supplied with the console | Joy-Con 2 controllers attached to the grip |
| Direct adapter | A suitable USB cable from the grip to a compatible 5 V, 1.5 A (7.5 W) power adapter | The adapter must meet the stated 5 V, 1.5 A input specification | Joy-Con 2 controllers attached to the grip |
Using the Switch 2 dock
- Connect the Switch 2 dock to its AC adapter and to the console’s supplied USB-C cable as directed for normal dock operation.
- Attach both Joy-Con 2 controllers to the charging grip, checking that each controller is fully seated on the correct side.
- Plug Nintendo USB charging cable BEE-016 into the grip’s USB-C port.
- Connect the other end of BEE-016 to a USB port on the powered Switch 2 dock.
- Leave the grip connected while the controllers charge. You can use the attached pair as a two-handed controller during this arrangement.
If the dock is not itself receiving power, its USB port cannot provide the documented charging route. A cable connected to an unpowered dock is not equivalent to a complete dock setup.

Using a direct power adapter
- Attach the Joy-Con 2 controllers to the grip.
- Use a suitable USB cable to connect the grip’s USB-C port to a power adapter rated for 5 V and 1.5 A, which is 7.5 W.
- Connect the adapter to a mains outlet and keep the cable connected while charging.
The 5 V, 1.5 A figure is the grip’s documented input requirement for this direct-adapter method, specified in Nintendo’s 2025 product leaflet. It is not a published charging-time estimate, battery-capacity figure or efficiency measurement.

| Controller or accessory | Works with Switch 2? | Physical attachment | Charging implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Joy-Con 2 | Yes | Attaches to Switch 2 and to the Joy-Con 2 charging grip | Charges on the console or while attached to the powered charging grip |
| Original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con | Pairs wirelessly | Cannot attach to the Switch 2 console | Needs an original Switch console or a compatible Joy-Con charging grip or charging stand |
| Original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Charging Grip | It remains an accessory for original Joy-Con | Not compatible with Joy-Con 2 | Do not buy it as a Joy-Con 2 charging solution |
| Switch 2 Pro Controller and supported classic controllers | Supported through their own USB charging arrangements | Do not use the Joy-Con 2 grip as their charging interface | Nintendo documents USB charging from the Switch 2 dock as a separate path |
The key distinction is the controller generation, not merely the USB-C connector. A connector that looks similar does not make the original Joy-Con charging grip mechanically or electrically compatible with Joy-Con 2. Nintendo’s compatibility information explicitly lists the original grip as incompatible with Joy-Con 2.
How to set up a reliable charging routine
For a desk or television setup
The dock method keeps the charging point near the console. Route BEE-016 from the grip to the dock, then place the grip where the cable is not under tension. When you finish playing, leave the controllers seated in the grip and the grip connected to the dock. This avoids repeatedly sliding controllers on and off the console.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For charging away from the dock
The direct-adapter method is useful when the dock is packed away or located in another room. Use an adapter whose specification clearly states 5 V, 1.5 A (7.5 W) compatibility, and use a cable that fits the grip’s USB-C port securely. The grip still needs a continuous connection; it does not turn into a battery-powered charger when unplugged.
When you also own original Joy-Con
Keep the charging path for original Joy-Con separate. They can be paired wirelessly with Switch 2 for play, but they cannot be slid onto the console. Use an original Switch console or a charging grip or two-way charging stand identified as compatible with original Joy-Con. Do not substitute the Joy-Con 2 grip unless the accessory’s documentation specifically supports those older controllers.
Troubleshooting when the controllers are not charging
Check the controller fit first
- Remove and reinsert each Joy-Con 2, making sure the left and right controllers are on their matching sides.
- Check that no case, debris or obstruction prevents the controller rails from seating completely.
- Try charging with both controllers firmly attached; the grip’s charging function is specified for attached controllers.
Check the power path
- For dock charging, verify that the dock has its AC adapter and supplied USB-C connection attached, then reconnect BEE-016 at both ends.
- For direct charging, check the adapter label for 5 V and 1.5 A output and confirm that the cable is fully inserted into the grip’s USB-C port.
- Try the other documented route if available. A direct adapter test can distinguish a dock power problem from a grip or controller fit problem.
Do not diagnose by charging speed
Nintendo has not published a charging-time target, battery-capacity number, laboratory efficiency result or independent comparison with other grips in the cited support materials. A precise time estimate found elsewhere should not be treated as an official specification unless it identifies a separate, verifiable test.

What the published specifications leave unknown
The documented 7.5 W input tells you what the direct-adapter route must provide; it does not tell you how quickly a particular pair reaches full charge. Nintendo also does not state the grip’s conversion efficiency, controller battery condition, temperature limits or a pass-through output for another device. Those omissions matter when comparing accessories: the confirmed difference is the supported controller generation and connection method, not an advertised speed advantage.
Nintendo separately documents USB charging for the Switch 2 Pro Controller and several classic controllers from the Switch 2 dock. That is a different charging path. Those controllers should be connected according to their own instructions rather than routed through the Joy-Con 2 charging grip.
Safety around the grip’s magnets
Nintendo’s product leaflet warns that the Joy-Con 2 charging grip contains magnets. Keep it at least 15 cm (about 6 inches) from a pacemaker or other implanted medical device, and consult a doctor if you use such a device. This precaution applies while the grip and attached controllers are being handled or stored.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoosing the right charging accessory
If you own Joy-Con 2 and want a holder that charges them while they are joined as a two-handed controller, choose the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con 2 charging grip. Confirm that the listing identifies Joy-Con 2 rather than only “Nintendo Switch Joy-Con.” If you already own original Joy-Con, look for a charging grip or charging stand explicitly compatible with that generation instead.
- Need the dock route? Make sure you have USB charging cable BEE-016 and a normally powered Switch 2 dock.
- Need a standalone power point? Use a suitable cable and a 5 V, 1.5 A (7.5 W) adapter that meets the grip’s stated input requirement.
- Need to charge the console? Connect the console using its own dock or approved charging arrangement; the grip is not documented as a console charger.
- Need to charge a phone or another USB device? Use a charger designed to provide power output. The grip’s USB-C port is documented as an input for the grip.
The practical answer
A Switch 2 charging grip is best understood as a powered holder for Joy-Con 2. It charges the controllers that are physically attached to it, either from a powered Switch 2 dock through cable BEE-016 or from a compatible 5 V, 1.5 A (7.5 W) adapter connected directly to its USB-C input. It does not replace the console charger, a phone charger or a power bank, and the original Switch Joy-Con charging grip cannot be used with Joy-Con 2.
