Nintendo Store exclusives are merchandise and hardware that Nintendo marks as exclusive in its own store catalog; the label describes where Nintendo currently offers the item, not a promise of permanent stock. My Nintendo Platinum Points can be earned from missions and exchanged for physical rewards, while Gold Points are legacy credit for eligible digital purchases. Nintendo stopped awarding new Gold Points on March 24, 2025, at 9:30 p.m. PDT. Existing Gold Points last 12 months from issuance. For a digital preorder, Nintendo normally charges up to seven days before release, applies eligible Gold Points held at that time, and cancels the preorder if payment fails.
What “Nintendo Store exclusive” means
Nintendo’s catalog has a section labeled Nintendo Stores exclusives. Items in that section include physical merchandise and hardware, with filters that can include Nintendo Switch 2 products. The catalog is the authoritative place to check an item’s current price, release timing, stock status and exclusive designation.

“Exclusive” is therefore a store-availability designation. It does not mean that Nintendo will keep the product in stock permanently, that every country receives the same item, or that an item can never appear through another sales channel later. Nintendo’s catalog uses statuses such as “coming soon,” and availability can change as inventory and sale periods change.

- Open the Nintendo Store catalog and select the Nintendo Stores exclusives category.
- Use the available product filters, including the Nintendo Switch 2 filter when relevant.
- Read the individual product page rather than relying on a search result or an older announcement. Confirm the displayed exclusive label, price, release or shipping information and stock status.
- Check the store serving your Nintendo Account’s country. A product shown in one regional store may have different shipping eligibility, currency or availability elsewhere.
If a page says “coming soon,” treat that as a status, not as a guaranteed delivery date. If an item disappears, the listing may have reached the end of its availability window or sold through its current stock; some rewards and merchandise return later, but Nintendo does not promise a regular restock schedule.

How My Nintendo points are organized
My Nintendo is a free rewards program connected to a Nintendo Account. Members complete missions and other qualifying activities, then redeem points through the My Nintendo website. The two point currencies have different purposes and should not be treated as interchangeable.
| Point type | How it is earned | What it can buy | Important timing or regional rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Platinum Points | Missions and other activities listed in My Nintendo | Physical My Nintendo rewards ordered through Nintendo Store, application items, sweepstakes entries, smart-device or PC downloads and profile-related rewards | Each reward has its own point cost, availability period and redemption conditions |
| Gold Points | Previously awarded for eligible purchases under Nintendo’s former program rules | Discounts on eligible digital games and downloadable content at checkout | No new Gold Points have been awarded since March 24, 2025, at 9:30 p.m. PDT; existing points expire 12 months after issuance and remain tied to their earning currency country |
Point balances and expiration dates are account-specific. Sign in to My Nintendo before planning a redemption so you can see the actual balance, the dates attached to Gold Points and the rewards available in your region.
Using Platinum Points for physical rewards
Platinum Points are the route for My Nintendo merchandise rewards. A reward page states the required number of points and the conditions for ordering it through the applicable Nintendo Store. Costs are not universal: one item may require a different number of points from another, and the catalog can change without a fixed update calendar.

- Sign in to the Nintendo Account associated with your My Nintendo balance.
- Open the My Nintendo rewards catalog and select the physical item you want.
- Check the item’s Platinum Point cost, expiration or end-of-availability date, stock notice, shipping eligibility and any order limits.
- Choose the redemption option and follow Nintendo Store checkout instructions. The points are deducted according to the reward page’s terms.
- Save the order confirmation and monitor the shipping information supplied by the regional store.
A reward can be unavailable even when your account has enough points. Nintendo says rewards are offered for a set period and may disappear when that period ends; some return later, while others do not. The lineup is updated regularly without a published fixed schedule. Always use the current reward page’s expiration and stock information instead of an old list or screenshot.
What Platinum Points do not imply
- They are not a cash balance and cannot automatically be substituted for Gold Points at digital checkout.
- Having enough points does not guarantee that a physical item is in stock or shippable to your address.
- Point requirements, shipping rules and eligibility can differ by the Nintendo Store serving your country.
Gold Points after the 2025 cutoff
Nintendo’s dated notice states: “Beginning at 9:30 p.m. PDT on 3/24/2025, users will no longer be able to earn My Nintendo Gold Points.” This ended new Gold Point awards for the activities covered by the former program, including digital purchases, physical games purchased after the cutoff, purchases funded with Nintendo eShop cards and purchases at Nintendo New York.
Gold Points earned before the change remain usable for 12 months after their issuance. They are therefore spend-down credit from earlier eligible activity, not an ongoing cashback benefit on new purchases. Check each point lot’s expiration date before waiting for a future game or preorder.

Where Gold Points can be used
Eligible Gold Points can be applied during checkout for qualifying digital games and downloadable content. Nintendo’s redemption guidance excludes passes, auto-renewals, in-game items and virtual currency. The checkout page determines whether a particular product qualifies; do not assume that every digital charge can use points.
Gold Points are also currency-region specific. Points remain associated with the currency country in which they were earned. Changing the Nintendo Account country can leave the points visible in the account while making them unavailable in a country that uses a different currency. If you plan to change countries, spend or verify the points first and review Nintendo’s country-change requirements.
How a digital Nintendo preorder works
A digital preorder is not charged on the day you place it. Nintendo’s support guidance says payment is collected up to seven days before the release date. The exact collection moment can therefore vary with the title’s scheduled launch and Nintendo’s processing.
Timeline from preorder to play
- Place the preorder. Confirm that the Nintendo Account, console and payment method are the ones you intend to use. Review the product’s release date and any regional restrictions.
- Wait for the collection window. Nintendo attempts to charge up to seven days before release. Gold Points available in the account at collection can be applied.
- Understand the point rule. For a digital preorder, Nintendo uses all available eligible Gold Points up to the purchase total. You cannot choose a custom smaller number of points for that preorder.
- Complete payment. After successful collection, the title can preload to the console if sufficient storage is available. Check free space before the collection date.
- Launch on release day. The preloaded data remains locked until release. At launch, a small update unlocks the game for play, subject to the console’s connection and any required update.
If payment fails
Nintendo says a failed payment cancels the preorder and the game does not preload. Keep the payment method current, make sure the account can authorize the charge and leave enough time to correct a problem before the collection attempt. If a cancellation occurs, you must purchase the title again if it is still available; the canceled preorder will not silently retry as a completed order.
Storage and network checks
- Verify free internal or compatible expansion storage before the preload window.
- Keep the console connected to the internet so the preorder can download and receive the release update.
- Do not treat a downloaded, locked icon as proof that payment succeeded; confirm the completed transaction in your account records.
Preordering with a Nintendo Switch Game Voucher
Game Voucher preorders follow a separate redemption path. Nintendo’s purchase instructions state that a voucher is not redeemed when you first place the preorder. Redemption occurs when preorder payment is collected, no earlier than seven days before release.
The voucher must still be valid at launch. If it expires before the game’s release, it cannot be used for that preorder, so check the voucher’s expiration date against the title’s scheduled launch before committing it. This timing is different from using an ordinary payment method and should be considered when a release date is far away or has changed.

Gold Points versus Platinum Points: which route fits?
| Question | Use Gold Points | Use Platinum Points |
|---|---|---|
| How did the balance originate? | Eligible purchase-linked awards from before the March 24, 2025 cutoff | Missions and other My Nintendo activities |
| What is the normal benefit? | Discount on an eligible digital game or DLC | Physical Nintendo Store reward or another catalog reward |
| What is the main timing risk? | Each balance expires 12 months after issuance | The selected item has its own availability and expiration window |
| What is the main regional risk? | The earning currency country must match the redemption currency conditions | Reward inventory, shipping and eligibility depend on the local Nintendo Store |
| Can new purchases increase the balance? | No new Gold Points are awarded under the post-cutoff rules | New points can be earned only through missions and activities that My Nintendo currently lists |
Choose Gold Points when you have an eligible digital purchase and an expiration date that makes waiting risky. Choose Platinum Points when a specific physical reward is available in your regional catalog and you are comfortable with its stock and shipping terms.
Regional, account and availability limits
Your Nintendo Account country affects more than the currency displayed at checkout. Gold Point usability follows the currency country where the points were earned. Physical reward access depends on the Nintendo Store that serves your location, including its shipping coverage and local inventory.
- Use the account country and store region that match your normal purchasing and shipping location.
- Before changing the account country, check outstanding Gold Point expiration dates and any pending preorder or subscription effects.
- Read the local reward page for delivery restrictions; an item shown in another country’s catalog is not automatically orderable from yours.
- Record the displayed price and status when making a time-sensitive decision because catalog stock and “coming soon” listings can change.
Common problems and practical fixes
“I have points, but checkout does not show them.”
First identify the currency. Platinum Points are for My Nintendo catalog rewards, not ordinary digital checkout. Gold Points work only for eligible digital products, and points from another currency country may be unusable after an account-country change. If the product is an excluded pass, auto-renewal, in-game item or virtual currency, a Gold Point option will not appear.
“My physical reward disappeared.”
Check the reward page’s end date and stock status. Nintendo can remove a reward when its availability period ends, and the lineup has no fixed update schedule. A disappearance is not evidence that the points were invalid; it usually means the item is outside its current redemption window.
“My preorder did not preload.”
Confirm that payment was collected successfully. A failed charge cancels the preorder, preventing preload. If payment succeeded, check console storage, internet connectivity and the release date. Preloaded data remains locked until launch and may need a small release update.
“The preorder used more Gold Points than I wanted.”
That is the documented preorder behavior: Nintendo applies all available eligible Gold Points up to the purchase total rather than offering a custom amount. Spend or preserve the balance before the collection window if you need it for another eligible digital purchase.
“I expected to earn Gold Points from a new purchase.”
New Gold Point awards stopped at 9:30 p.m. PDT on March 24, 2025. Check My Nintendo’s current missions for ways to earn Platinum Points instead, and treat any remaining Gold balance as expiring credit.
Quick Recap
A pre-order and rewards checklist
- Confirm whether the item is a Nintendo Store catalog exclusive or simply Nintendo merchandise sold elsewhere.
- Check the current regional page for price, stock, “coming soon” status, shipping eligibility and any end date.
- For rewards, verify the point type, required balance and expiration or availability window.
- For Gold Points, record each lot’s 12-month expiration date and confirm the account currency country.
- For a digital preorder, keep payment details current and allow storage for preload before the up-to-seven-day collection window.
- If using a Game Voucher, ensure it will not expire before the game launches.
- After ordering, verify payment or redemption in the account rather than relying only on a console icon.
