Nintendo sets game prices title by title and considers factors such as regional market conditions, exchange rates, consumers’ price expectations, and rising development costs. Starting with May 2026 preorders, a narrower policy applies: new Nintendo-published games exclusive to Switch 2 will have a different MSRP for digital and packaged versions. Nintendo says the experiences are the same, but retailer prices can vary, so the actual checkout difference depends on the title, region, and seller.

What factors does Nintendo consider when pricing games?

Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa described the company’s software-pricing approach in its May 2025 financial results briefing. He said Nintendo considers regional factors, including exchange-rate differences, market conditions, and consumers’ impression of a price. It also accounts for rising costs associated with larger game files and longer development periods. Nintendo has not published a formula that determines a specific game’s price; it says prices are considered for each title.

Furukawa summarized the cost element this way: “For software, in addition to the same factors, we also take into account rises in costs, due to aspects such as increased game file size and extended development periods, when determining price.” Nintendo’s May 2025 financial results briefing Q&A

When does physical versus digital affect Switch 2 MSRP?

Nintendo announced on March 25, 2026 that, beginning with May 2026 preorders, new Nintendo-published digital titles exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2 would have an MSRP different from their physical versions. Nintendo named Yoshi and the Mysterious Book as the first preorder example. Its U.S. store page identifies the game as Nintendo-published, Switch 2-exclusive, and scheduled for release on May 21, 2026. Nintendo’s U.S. store listing for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book

Nintendo says packaged and digital editions provide the same game experience; the MSRP distinction reflects different costs of producing and distributing the formats. The company described the change as offering players more choice in how they buy and play. Nintendo’s Switch 2 pricing announcement

The policy has a defined scope

The announcement concerns new digital titles that are both published by Nintendo and exclusive to Switch 2. It does not establish that every Nintendo-published game, third-party title, or game on another console will have different format MSRPs. Nor does it promise a particular difference in the amount charged at checkout.

Why MSRP may not match the price you pay

MSRP is the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, not a guaranteed transaction price. Nintendo says retail partners set their own prices for physical and digital games, and prices may vary by title. To compare fairly, check the same game, region, edition, retailer, and purchase period. Nintendo’s announcement confirms a format-based MSRP difference for the specified Switch 2 category but does not publish a universal dollar or percentage gap.

For a purchase decision, compare the listed prices for both formats at the seller you plan to use. A lower MSRP in one format does not by itself establish what every retailer will charge.

How Nintendo’s explanation has changed over time

In a 2013 investor Q&A, then-President Satoru Iwata said Nintendo priced packaged and digital versions equally when they contained the same software. He connected that approach to valuing the software itself, while noting that digital-only concepts could be treated differently when buyers might find their value harder to assess before playing. In a 2012 Q&A, Iwata also described different conveniences associated with downloads and physical game cards: digital libraries can avoid swapping or losing cards, while packaged copies can be inserted and played and may be exchanged with friends. Those comments explain historical consumer considerations; they are not a current technical or resale guarantee for every Switch 2 game. Nintendo’s April 2012 financial-results Q&A

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe - US Version
  • A variety of playable characters are available, some with unique attributes that affect gameplay and platforming physics.
  • Younger and less-experienced players will love playing as Toadette, who is brand new to both games, and Nabbit, who was formerly only playable in New Super Luigi U. Both characters offer extra assistance during play.
  • Multiplayer sessions are even more fun, frantic, and exciting thanks to entertaining character interactions. Need a boost? Try jumping off a teammate’s head or getting a teammate to throw you.
  • Features a wealth of help features, like a Hints gallery, reference videos, and a Super Guide in New Super Mario Bros. U that can complete levels for you if they’re giving you trouble.
  • Three additional modes—Boost Rush, Challenges, and Coin Battle—mix up gameplay and add replayability, while also upping the difficulty for players who want to try something harder. Players can use their Mii characters in these modes.

The current Switch 2 announcement adds a distinct rationale: different production and distribution costs by format. It is a change in stated MSRP policy for a defined category, not evidence of a universal pricing rule across Nintendo’s catalog.

What to check before buying

  • Confirm the title and publisher. The announced format-based MSRP policy is for new Nintendo-published Switch 2 exclusives.
  • Check the region and edition. Regional conditions and title-specific pricing matter; compare like with like.
  • Separate MSRP from the seller’s price. Retailers set their own prices, so inspect the current listing for each format.
  • Choose based on format preference as well as price. Nintendo says the game experience is the same in packaged and digital formats; convenience and having a physical copy may matter to individual buyers.
