There is no single platform-wide price for Nintendo, PlayStation, or Xbox games. In U.S. listings, $69.99 is a visible price point on all three, but that does not make every game cost the same—or establish that one platform is generally cheaper. The meaningful comparison is between the same game, edition, format, region, and date, with full prices kept separate from sale offers.

What the available U.S. prices show

The evidence supports a useful point of comparison, not a platform ranking. Nintendo announced two different U.S. launch prices for Switch 2 games in 2025: Mario Kart World at $79.99 and Donkey Kong Bananza at $69.99. Nintendo said those launch prices applied to both physical and digital versions. These are historical launch MSRP figures, not confirmation of either game’s current price. Nintendo of America’s April 18, 2025 announcement provides the figures.

In 2026 observations of the U.S. PlayStation Store, listings include games with an original price of $69.99 as well as games at other prices. The U.S. Xbox catalog likewise shows multiple Standard Edition games at $69.99, alongside lower- and higher-priced listings and discounted offers. Those are examples from changing storefront catalogs, not official universal price tiers or a representative market average. The PlayStation Store U.S. catalog and Xbox U.S. catalog display prices by game and offer.

Platform U.S. price evidence What the figure means
Nintendo Switch 2 Mario Kart World: $79.99; Donkey Kong Bananza: $69.99 Launch prices announced by Nintendo in April 2025 for both physical and digital versions; not current-price checks.
PlayStation $69.99 original-price example, with other listing prices also present Dynamic U.S. Store observation in 2026; not a platform-wide statistic.
Xbox Multiple $69.99 Standard Edition listings, with lower and higher prices and discounts also present Dynamic U.S. catalog observation in 2026; not a universal tier or average.

These examples do not establish what a typical game costs across each catalog. They also are not a like-for-like test: the cited Nintendo titles are not presented as versions of the same game sold on PlayStation and Xbox. The table is best read as a snapshot of price points and pricing variation, not proof that one console family is more expensive.

The $69.99 figures also describe different kinds of evidence. Nintendo’s two numbers were announced launch MSRPs for named games; PlayStation and Xbox examples are prices displayed in their respective catalogs. An MSRP is a recommended price, while a storefront listing is what that store displays for a particular offer at a particular time. Neither type should be silently substituted for the other. In particular, the Nintendo launch figures do not tell you what a retailer or the Nintendo Store charges today.

That distinction answers the common question, “How much do Nintendo games cost compared with PlayStation and Xbox?” There is no single answer across whole catalogs. These examples show that $69.99 occurs on all three, and that a Nintendo-published Switch 2 launch title was also announced at $79.99. They do not show the proportion of games at each price, how much buyers actually spend, or which platform has the lowest average.

Why a price comparison can be misleading

A displayed number only answers “What does this listing cost?” after its context is clear. Stores may show an original price beside a sale price, and the sale can change or end. A launch MSRP announced by a publisher is not the same thing as a current store price, and neither guarantees what a particular retailer charges. Comparing an edition with added content against a standard edition can also make one platform look more expensive without comparing equivalent products.

  • Price type: Identify whether the number is an announced MSRP, the current list price shown by a storefront, or a limited-time discount. Do not treat a crossed-out original price as the amount a buyer will pay now.
  • Edition: Compare Standard Edition with Standard Edition. If one listing includes extra content or another edition designation, label that difference rather than treating the prices as equivalent.
  • Format: Compare physical with physical or digital with digital. A physical copy and a download are different purchase formats, and Nintendo’s announced Switch 2 policy makes that distinction especially important for some future releases.
  • Region and currency: The examples here are U.S. prices in U.S. dollars. Prices from another country or currency should not be mixed into this comparison.
  • Date: Record the day you check. Catalog prices and sales are dynamic, so a price found in 2026 may no longer be available later.

These checks matter even when two listings appear to name the same game. Confirm the platform version, edition label, and format before treating the amounts as comparable. A $69.99 original price on one store and a discounted amount on another are not evidence that the regular prices differ by the same amount. Likewise, a higher-priced edition should not be used to represent the cost of the standard game if the other listing is standard.

Nintendo’s U.S. games store lists downloadable and physical games, while the PlayStation and Xbox catalogs also show game-specific listings. Use the relevant U.S. storefronts when checking a purchase: Nintendo Store games catalog, PlayStation Store U.S., and Xbox U.S. games catalog.

How Nintendo’s physical and digital prices differ

Nintendo’s Switch 2 pricing announcements involve two distinct situations. For Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza at launch in 2025, the announced prices were the same for physical and digital versions: $79.99 and $69.99 respectively. That is a statement about those two launch prices, not a rule that every Switch 2 game must have identical prices across formats.

On March 25, 2026, Nintendo of America announced a policy change for a narrower set of releases: “Beginning in May 2026, and starting with preorders for Yoshi™ and the Mysterious Book, new Nintendo published digital titles exclusive to Nintendo Switch™ 2 will have an MSRP that is different from physical versions.” The notice identifies Nintendo-published digital titles exclusive to Switch 2 and says their MSRP will differ from physical versions. It does not say that every title is covered, that the digital version will always cost less, or that the difference is a fixed amount. Check the specific game’s format and listing rather than applying one assumed gap across the catalog. Read Nintendo’s pricing notice.

That policy also changes how to read older launch comparisons. A physical-versus-digital price relationship announced for a 2025 game cannot automatically be carried forward to a qualifying Nintendo-published digital release beginning with the May 2026 policy. Conversely, the policy is not evidence that every Switch 2 digital game has a different MSRP. The game’s own current listing is the relevant evidence for a purchase.

For shoppers, the practical implication is to check the exact version they intend to buy, rather than assume format alone determines the amount. If a digital and a physical listing differ, first confirm that both are for the same game and comparable edition, then note whether the difference is between stated MSRPs or between current offers. Nintendo’s policy describes a different MSRP for a defined category of new digital releases; it does not establish a universal digital discount or premium. The named 2025 launch examples, by contrast, had matching announced prices across the two formats.

How to compare a game before buying

For a decision that can be checked and repeated, compare one title across the stores where it is actually available. If a title is exclusive to a platform or has no equivalent edition elsewhere, it cannot support a direct cross-platform price judgment.

  1. Choose the exact title and platform versions. Confirm that the game is sold on each platform you intend to compare. If it is not available across all of them, treat the available listings as separate examples, not equivalent alternatives.
  2. Match the edition. Select the same edition level wherever possible. Note any edition difference that prevents a true comparison.
  3. Match the format. Compare physical listings with other physical listings, or digital storefront listings with other digital listings. For a Nintendo title, check whether the release falls within the Switch 2 digital-pricing policy described above.
  4. Read the price label carefully. Record the current amount payable and distinguish it from any original or reference price. Note whether the displayed offer is discounted rather than a regular list price.
  5. Normalize location and date. Use the U.S. stores and U.S. dollar amounts for this comparison. Write down when you checked, since current listings and promotions can change.
  6. Decide what the result can prove. A matched listing can tell you which equivalent offer is lower on the date checked. A handful of unrelated titles cannot establish a platform-wide average or a general “cheapest console” result.

A simple record can prevent accidental mismatches: title, platform, edition, format, listed price, whether it is a sale, and date checked. If any one of those fields differs, treat the numbers as different offers rather than as a clean price comparison.

For example, a careful comparison could record one game’s standard digital edition on the U.S. PlayStation Store and Xbox catalog on the same day, marking the displayed amount as either a current list price or a discount. If you also check a Nintendo version, include it only if the same title and an equivalent edition are available there; do not use Mario Kart World or Donkey Kong Bananza as stand-ins for those versions. If there is no comparable Nintendo listing, say so and keep the Nintendo launch figures as separate context rather than forcing a three-way result.

A price check is time-sensitive, so save the date alongside the listing rather than treating a number as permanently current. The PlayStation and Xbox catalogs include changing prices and offers; Nintendo’s announced launch MSRPs likewise do not establish today’s storefront amount. Rechecking shortly before purchase is the practical way to avoid relying on an expired offer or an older announcement.

What you can—and cannot—conclude

The defensible conclusion is that $69.99 appears as a price point in Nintendo’s named Switch 2 launch example and in observed PlayStation and Xbox U.S. listings, while at least one Nintendo launch example was higher at $79.99. PlayStation and Xbox catalogs also include other prices and discounts. These facts illustrate variation, not a ranking. The evidence does not provide a market-wide average for each platform, a survey of comparable games, or a matched basket of titles from which to calculate which ecosystem is generally less expensive.

That is why a categorical answer to “Are Nintendo Switch 2 games more expensive than PS5 or Xbox games?” would overstate what these examples show. The $79.99 Mario Kart World launch MSRP is higher than the $69.99 examples, but one named Nintendo title cannot establish how an entire catalog compares. Donkey Kong Bananza’s $69.99 launch MSRP also demonstrates variation within Nintendo’s own examples. On the other side, observed PlayStation and Xbox catalogs contain lower and higher prices as well as discounted offers.

For a specific purchase, the practical answer is therefore title-specific: compare the same edition and format on the U.S. storefronts on the day you buy, and treat an announced launch MSRP as historical unless the current listing confirms it. For broader questions about whether one platform is cheaper overall, the evidence here is insufficient to answer with a reliable winner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Nintendo Switch 2 games more expensive than PS5 or Xbox games?

Not as a general rule that can be established from these examples. Nintendo announced Mario Kart World at $79.99 and Donkey Kong Bananza at $69.99 for launch in 2025, while PlayStation and Xbox U.S. catalogs also show $69.99 examples along with other prices and discounts. A fair answer requires a matched game, edition, format, and date.

Is $69.99 the standard price for games on all three platforms?

No. It is a visible price point in the cited Nintendo launch example and observed PlayStation and Xbox listings, not a universal tier. Each catalog contains games at other prices, and the storefront examples are not a market-wide average.

Are Nintendo digital games always cheaper than physical copies?

No such general rule is established. Nintendo’s April 2025 announcement gave Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza the same launch prices in physical and digital formats. A March 2026 Nintendo notice says that, beginning in May 2026, new Nintendo-published digital titles exclusive to Switch 2 will have an MSRP different from physical versions; it does not say the digital price is always lower or specify a fixed difference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can the price shown in a store differ from an announced launch price?

An announced launch MSRP is not the same as a current storefront listing or a limited-time offer. Store prices and discounts can change, and a retailer’s offer is not verified by a historical launch announcement. Check the specific U.S. listing and date before buying.

How can I compare prices fairly?

Compare the same title and edition, use physical-to-physical or digital-to-digital listings, keep the region and currency consistent, and distinguish the current price from an original price or sale. Record the date, because store catalogs and offers change.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: $69.99 appears in U.S. examples for Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox, but one number cannot rank whole platforms. Nintendo’s named Switch 2 launch prices were $79.99 for Mario Kart World and $69.99 for Donkey Kong Bananza, with the same announced price for physical and digital versions. Compare the same game, edition, format, U.S. store, and date—and check the current listing before buying.
