Nintendo says it prices software title by title, weighing regional market conditions, consumer perceptions of price, development costs and the experience a game offers. The company has not published a formula or disclosed how much weight it gives each factor, so its explanations describe considerations—not a rule readers can use to calculate a game’s price.

What Nintendo says goes into a game’s price

In its 2025 financial-results Q&A, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said software pricing takes account of regional factors as well as rising costs. He specifically pointed to larger game file sizes and longer development periods. Nintendo says it considers an appropriate price for each title rather than applying a disclosed universal benchmark.

Furukawa explained: “For software, in addition to the same factors, we also take into account rises in costs, due to aspects such as increased game file size and extended development periods, when determining price.” Nintendo’s 2025 financial-results briefing discusses pricing for hardware and software, but does not provide a formula, factor weights or a price calculator.

Regional conditions and price expectations

Furukawa said Nintendo evaluates factors in each region. In discussing hardware, he identified manufacturing cost, consumers’ impressions of the price, exchange-rate differences compared with the original Switch launch, and regional market conditions. He said regional factors also apply to software. This means the same game need not have one globally uniform price, but Nintendo’s explanation does not specify how any particular region’s price is calculated.

Development and production costs

For software, Nintendo explicitly identifies increased game file sizes and extended development periods as cost considerations. The company has not quantified how much either factor contributes to an individual game’s price, nor said that a larger file or longer development period automatically results in a particular price increase.

Content and the play experience

In a 2025 interview about Mario Kart World, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser said the company considers a game’s content and the extended amount of play its gameplay experiences provide, alongside other factors. That is an executive’s description of how Nintendo thinks about the offer to players, not a complete pricing formula. The Washington Post interview discussed the game’s price in that 2025 context; it should not be treated as evidence of a current retail price.

How Nintendo describes value and affordability

In its 2025 shareholder Q&A, Furukawa said Nintendo believes Switch 2’s price is appropriate for the gaming experience it offers, and said the company’s priority is to provide entertaining experiences that demonstrate value to consumers. He also said Nintendo monitors whether the system’s price could become a barrier for young consumers. These comments describe Nintendo’s stated value and affordability concerns; they do not establish a specific affordability threshold for games.

Why a reader cannot calculate a Nintendo game’s price

Nintendo’s public explanations identify several considerations, but do not disclose their relative importance or how they combine. A reader comparing two titles can use the company’s statements as context, not as a way to reproduce its internal decision.

  • Player-facing offer: Bowser described content and the amount of play provided by gameplay experiences.
  • Software costs: Furukawa cited increased file sizes and longer development periods.
  • Region and market: Nintendo says regional conditions and consumer price impressions matter.
  • Timing: A price mentioned in an interview is tied to that interview’s date and context; it is not necessarily a current listing price.

The $79.99 amount discussed in the 2025 Washington Post interview was a historical example in that conversation, not a current price or a company-wide benchmark. For a purchase decision, check the current listing for the game, edition and region you intend to buy.

What Nintendo’s older explanation of physical and digital sales adds

In a 2013 Q&A, then-president Satoru Iwata said physical distribution entails costs and that a packaged product must leave room for distributor and retailer margins. He also discussed Nintendo’s experiments with digital pricing and marketing. Iwata’s comments help explain why physical distribution can affect pricing flexibility, but they are historical context—not proof of a current rule for every Nintendo game or digital release. Nintendo’s 2013 Q&A records that earlier discussion.
