Nintendo’s GTA history includes two handheld entries—the Game Boy Advance release of Grand Theft Auto and Nintendo DS’s Chinatown Wars—as well as the modern Nintendo Switch collection of GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas. PlayStation and Xbox share that trilogy, too. The key differences supported by official listings are the games available on Nintendo systems, Switch’s touch and motion controls, and the higher-resolution, higher-frame-rate support Rockstar announced for PS5 and Xbox Series X; those announcements do not establish which version performs best in typical play.

What GTA games have appeared on Nintendo consoles?

Nintendo’s GTA catalog spans three generations of hardware, but it is not simply a smaller version of the PlayStation and Xbox catalog. Its documented releases include a Game Boy Advance interpretation of Grand Theft Auto, a Nintendo DS version of Chinatown Wars, and a Switch collection of three earlier mainline games. The first two are handheld-specific entries; the Switch collection is the same cross-platform release offered on PlayStation, Xbox and PC.

Nintendo platform GTA release Officially listed date What the listing establishes
Game Boy Advance Grand Theft Auto October 2004 Nintendo describes it as a new interpretation of Rockstar’s crime game. Nintendo UK listing
Nintendo DS Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars 20 March 2009 Nintendo describes a DS-focused game with touchscreen controls. Rockstar’s platform listing also names PSP, iOS, Android and Kindle. Nintendo UK listing; Rockstar game page
Nintendo Switch Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition Digital: 11 November 2021; game card: 11 February 2022 Includes GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas. The dates are those shown on Nintendo UK’s listing. Nintendo UK listing

The dates above are Nintendo UK listing dates, not a claim that each release arrived everywhere on the same day. They also describe releases, not whether a used cartridge or a current digital copy is available in a particular country today.

Game Boy Advance: a distinct handheld entry

Nintendo lists Grand Theft Auto for Game Boy Advance in October 2004 and characterizes it as a new interpretation of Rockstar’s crime game. That makes it part of Nintendo’s GTA history, but it is not one of the three games in the Switch collection. The listing establishes the platform and release month; it does not provide a basis for comparing technical performance against PlayStation or Xbox versions.

Nintendo DS: a handheld game that later reached other platforms

Chinatown Wars arrived on DS on 20 March 2009. Nintendo’s product page emphasizes that the game was built around the DS and its touchscreen. That description captures the Nintendo release’s design context, but it should not be read as a lasting claim of platform exclusivity: Rockstar’s official page also lists PSP, iOS, Android and Kindle releases. In other words, the DS edition is a Nintendo handheld entry, while the game itself was not confined to Nintendo hardware.

Switch: the three-game collection

The Switch release of The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition brings together Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Nintendo UK lists the digital release as 11 November 2021 and the game-card release as 11 February 2022. Those are two formats of the Switch collection, not two different collections.

How does the Switch collection compare with PlayStation and Xbox?

For The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, the central comparison is cross-platform: Rockstar announced it for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, and PC. The three-game lineup is therefore not unique to Nintendo. The distinctions Rockstar called out in its launch announcement are platform features and controls rather than different game lists. Measured comparative performance Not established by the cited launch announcement. Not established by the cited launch announcement.

The table reflects advertised platform features, not a controlled comparison of the versions. Rockstar’s statement that PS5 and Xbox Series X support 4K resolution with up to 60 frames per second describes a capability it announced for those platforms. It is not evidence that every scene runs at that frame rate, nor does it measure how the Switch version behaves.

What changes when you play on Switch?

Portable, tabletop and TV play

The Switch listing identifies handheld, tabletop and TV play modes. That gives the Switch edition a use case that depends on where and how you want to play: you can use the system as a handheld, stand it for tabletop play, or connect it for TV play. The mode options do not, by themselves, establish a difference in visual quality or performance between those modes. Nintendo’s Switch product page

Touchscreen and gyro controls

Rockstar announced gyro aiming and touchscreen camera and menu controls for Switch. These are meaningful interface distinctions if you prefer motion input for aiming or direct touch access to camera and menu controls. They are not enough to say that one control scheme is objectively better; comfort and preference vary, and the announcement does not provide comparative usability testing.

  • The battery life will depend on the games you play. For instance, the battery will last approximately 5.5 hours for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (games sold separately)
  • Model number HAC 001( 01)

The earlier DS release of Chinatown Wars also foregrounded touchscreen input, but that is a feature of that handheld game, not a control option for the Switch trilogy. The DS game and Switch collection are separate releases with separate product listings, so do not assume features advertised for one carry over to the other.

Does PlayStation or Xbox have better GTA performance?

The available official claims do not support an overall performance winner. Rockstar specified 4K resolution support and up to 60 FPS for PS5 and Xbox Series X, while identifying Switch-specific gyro and touchscreen features. It did not provide, in that announcement, directly comparable measurements for Switch, PS4, Xbox One or Xbox Series S, or a test showing how consistently any platform meets an advertised ceiling.

A fair performance comparison would need comparable measurements taken in the same game scenes and conditions. The cited platform announcement does not report typical gameplay resolution, frame pacing, load times, visual quality, or stability. Without those measurements, it would be misleading to turn the announced PS5 and Series X capability into a claim that those consoles always run better, or to infer a Switch frame rate from the fact that it is the less powerful hardware category. The evidence establishes what Rockstar announced, not a benchmark ranking.

Which platform makes sense for which player?

Choose based on the release you want and the way you plan to play, rather than treating the available announcements as a complete quality verdict.

  • Choose Switch if portability or flexible play modes matter most. The Switch listing includes handheld, tabletop and TV modes, and Rockstar announced gyro aiming and touchscreen camera/menu controls. These are the clearest documented reasons to prefer its version.
  • Consider PS5 or Xbox Series X if the announced 4K and up-to-60-FPS support matters to your setup. Rockstar named those capabilities for these two consoles. The announcement is not a report of performance in every scene, so it should be used as a feature statement, not a guarantee of constant results.
  • Consider PS4, Xbox One or Xbox Series S if you already own one of those systems. Rockstar listed each among the Definitive Edition platforms, but the cited announcement does not supply like-for-like technical figures for them.
  • Look beyond the Switch trilogy if your interest is specifically in the historic Nintendo handheld releases. The GBA listing documents Grand Theft Auto, and the DS listing documents Chinatown Wars. These are different games from the Switch trilogy, not alternate versions of its three titles.

This is a decision framework based on documented platform availability and advertised features. It cannot settle questions such as which port has the most stable frame rate or the shortest loading without comparable testing.

What should you know about the Switch physical edition?

Nintendo UK lists a game-card edition of The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, but says an internet download is required for the physical version. A game card therefore does not mean that the entire game collection is available on the card without downloading additional data. Check the packaging and current regional product details before buying, especially if download size or internet access affects your decision. Nintendo UK’s listing

Nintendo Switch – Neon Red and Neon Blue Joy-Con (Renewed)
  • One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
  • Two players can each take one
  • Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
  • Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.

For older GBA and DS copies, the official listings establish that those releases existed; they do not establish current stock, condition, completeness, seller reliability or compatibility for a particular used copy. Treat any purchase as a listing-specific decision and confirm the exact platform and included item before paying.

What the official record can—and cannot—tell you

Nintendo’s listings are useful for identifying Nintendo platforms, titles, release dates and product details. Rockstar’s announcement establishes which platforms received the Definitive Edition and which platform-specific features the publisher advertised. Together, those sources show a clear difference in catalog history: Nintendo had dedicated handheld GTA releases before receiving the modern trilogy, while the trilogy itself was a multi-platform collection.

They do not constitute a laboratory test or cross-platform review. In particular, they do not establish typical resolution on Switch, frame-rate consistency on any platform, comparative load times, or a universal quality ranking. A reader deciding between versions can rely on the documented game list and announced features, but should look for matched independent testing before treating an unmeasured performance claim as settled.
