Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo detects movement inside a calibrated zone aimed at your bed. Stretching or rolling can quiet a motion-sensing alarm, and moving out of the zone can stop it. Its “sleep tracking” is not clinical sleep-stage analysis: Alarmo records time in the sensor zone, movement while you are there, and how long it takes to leave after the alarm sounds.
The clock has no camera. Nintendo says movement-related data is not shared from the device. Reliable operation depends on careful placement, calibration, sensitivity settings, and a continuously connected power adapter.

What Alarmo actually senses
Alarmo uses a motion sensor pointed at the sleeping area. During setup, you define a sensor zone, and the clock reacts to motion detected within that zone. It does not identify a person, measure body signals, or determine who moved.

In a motion-sensing alarm mode, movements such as stretching or rolling over can make the alarm quieter. As you move away from the bed, the alarm can stop. The intended sequence is gradual: movement quiets the sound, then leaving the bed ends the alarm.
#1 Best Overall
- Make waking up fun with Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo
Button Mode disables motion sensing. In that mode, you use the clock’s physical controls instead of gestures or out-of-bed detection.
Why the sensor can be fooled
Because the sensor responds to motion in an area rather than recognizing a sleeper, other moving objects can trigger it. Nintendo specifically warns about pets, electric fans, analog clocks, air conditioners, air purifiers, humidifiers, heaters, and ceiling fans. A shared bed can also produce unexpected results: the alarm may stop when one person gets up, then restart if the sensor still detects the other person.
How to place and calibrate Alarmo
Placement determines what the sensor sees. Nintendo’s US setup guidance calls for a stable, flat surface near the bed, an unobstructed view of the sleeping area, and specific distance limits.
- Put the clock on a stable, flat surface beside the bed.
- Position it so the sensor faces the sleeping area without objects blocking its view.
- Keep the clock within 20 inches (50 centimeters) of the bed edge.
- Keep the clock no more than 8 inches (20 centimeters) above the bed.
- Use the setup process to mark the sensor zone covering the part of the bed where movement should be detected.
- Test the alarm while lying down, moving, and getting out of bed before relying on it for a scheduled wake-up.
The zone should include the relevant sleeping area but exclude moving objects elsewhere in the room. If you move the clock, change the bed, change sleeping positions, or rearrange furniture, run sensor-zone setup again.
Adjusting sensitivity
If the alarm reacts to a fan, pet, or another unwanted motion source, review the sensor zone first. Remove the moving object from the zone or reframe the zone so it is not included. If false triggers continue, lower the sensitivity.
Lower sensitivity is a trade-off, not a universal fix. It reduces reactions to unwanted movement but also makes Alarmo less responsive to human movement. After changing it, test both alarm quieting and out-of-bed detection.
What Alarmo’s “sleep tracking” measures
Alarmo’s records are timing and movement summaries derived from the configured sensor zone. Nintendo’s documentation does not describe clinical sleep-stage measurement, heart-rate tracking, breathing analysis, or other medical metrics.
| Record | What it represents | Retention stated by Nintendo |
|---|---|---|
| Sleep Records | Time spent in the sensor zone | Deleted after one year |
| Wake-Up Records | Time from the alarm sounding until you move away from the bed | Deleted after one year |
| Movement Records | Time spent moving while in the sensor zone, such as movement during sleep | Deleted after one month |
These measurements describe presence and motion inside the zone. For example, a long Sleep Record means the sensor detected you in the zone for that period; it does not prove that you were continuously asleep. A Wake-Up Record measures the interval after the alarm begins until movement away from the bed is detected, not the quality of your waking experience.
When Movement Records became available
Record features were expanded in Ver. 2.0.0, released on October 9, 2024. That update added Movement Records and an estimated movement location shown during sensor-zone checks.

Turning records off
Alarmo lets you turn record collection off. Nintendo’s settings information says records that were already displayed remain visible when collection is disabled. Turning collection off therefore affects new recording; it does not immediately erase the records already shown.
Does Alarmo use a camera?
No. Nintendo’s FAQ states that Alarmo has no camera and senses sleep-related motion without camera-based monitoring. Nintendo also states: “No movement-related data is shared from Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo.”

Wi-Fi is present for specific functions rather than continuous camera or motion streaming. Nintendo lists internet time synchronization, Nintendo Account linking, downloading additional scenes, and firmware updates as Wi-Fi uses. The motion records described above are generated from the clock’s sensor-zone behavior; Nintendo’s cited FAQ says those movement-related data are not shared.
Power, connectivity, and physical requirements
Alarmo is designed to remain connected to household power. The USB-C cable is included, but the AC power adapter is sold separately. Nintendo says the adapter should provide at least 5 volts, 1.5 amps, or 7.5 watts.
- Included: USB-C cable.
- Required separately: USB power adapter rated at least 5V/1.5A/7.5W.
- Normal operation: Keep the clock connected to household power.
- Power outage protection: A backup battery preserves the current time during an outage.
The backup battery does not replace the normal power connection for everyday use. If the clock is unplugged, alarm and sensing behavior may not be available as intended.
Current software and what updates changed
Nintendo’s UK update history lists Ver. 4.0.0, released May 19, 2026, as the latest listed version. It changed scene selection to a title-first flow, added Shuffle Favorites, and included stability improvements.

Ver. 2.0.0, released October 9, 2024, added Movement Records and estimated movement-location information during sensor-zone checks.
Update availability and menu wording can vary by region or later firmware. Check the clock’s update function and Nintendo’s regional update history before troubleshooting a behavior that may have changed after an update.
Why Alarmo keeps ringing after you get up
If the alarm continues after you stand, the sensor may not be detecting your movement away from the configured zone. Work through these checks in order.

1. Confirm the clock can see the bed
Make sure the clock is facing the sleeping area, within 20 inches (50 centimeters) of the bed edge, and no higher than 8 inches (20 centimeters) above the bed. Remove objects blocking the view.
2. Reconfigure the sensor zone
A zone created before a bed or clock was moved may no longer match the room. Run sensor-zone setup again and include the area where you lie, while excluding fans, pets, and other moving objects.
3. Check sensitivity
If sensitivity was lowered to prevent false triggers, the sensor may no longer detect the movement needed to end the alarm. Raise it gradually and test the alarm, or improve the zone boundaries before increasing sensitivity.
4. Test for a second sleeper
On a shared bed, one person leaving can stop the alarm while another remains in the zone. If the clock then detects the remaining sleeper, it may restart or continue. Test with both occupants present and consider Button Mode if motion-based behavior cannot be made predictable.
5. Look for environmental motion
Temporarily switch off nearby fans, air conditioners, air purifiers, humidifiers, heaters, and ceiling fans. Move pets away from the zone and check whether an analog clock or another object is moving within the sensor’s view.
Why the alarm may stop too soon
The opposite problem usually means the sensor detected movement away from the bed or detected another change inside the zone. Review whether the zone extends into a walkway, chair, or neighboring bed. Tighten the zone around the intended sleeping position and repeat the test.
If another person shares the bed, the alarm may interpret that person’s movement as the sleeper’s movement. Button Mode removes this motion-based uncertainty but also removes gesture-based quieting and automatic out-of-bed detection.
How to evaluate Alarmo against another sleep or alarm device
Alarmo is best understood as a motion-responsive alarm with basic movement and timing records, not as a full sleep laboratory or biometric monitor. Use these comparison criteria when deciding whether its approach fits your routine.
Quick Recap
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask | Alarmo’s documented approach |
|---|---|---|
| Sensing method | Does it use a room sensor, camera, wearable, mattress sensor, or buttons? | Motion sensing within a configured bed-area zone; Button Mode disables sensing. |
| Data depth | Does it report stages or biometrics, or only presence and movement? | Sleep, wake-up, and movement timing summaries; no documented clinical sleep-stage analysis. |
| False-trigger risk | Can pets, fans, roommates, or layout changes affect results? | Yes. Zone placement and sensitivity directly affect reliability. |
| Privacy and connectivity | Is there a camera, what data leave the device, and what requires Wi-Fi? | No camera; Nintendo says movement-related data are not shared. Wi-Fi supports time sync, account linking, scene downloads, and updates. |
| Power and placement | Does it need wall power and precise positioning? | Household power, separate USB adapter, nearby placement, unobstructed view, and calibration. |
| Wake-up interaction | Can movement quiet or dismiss the alarm? | Movement can quiet the alarm and leaving the zone can stop it; Button Mode uses controls. |
A practical setup checklist
- Use a flat, stable surface near the bed.
- Keep the clock within 20 inches (50 centimeters) of the bed edge and no higher than 8 inches (20 centimeters) above it.
- Point the sensor at the sleeping area with an unobstructed view.
- Calibrate the sensor zone after installation and after any room or bed change.
- Keep pets and moving appliances outside the zone.
- Choose sensitivity high enough to detect normal movement but low enough to avoid environmental triggers.
- Run a full alarm test before the first important wake-up.
- Use Button Mode when a shared bed or room layout makes motion detection unreliable.
- Connect the included USB-C cable to a separately sold adapter rated at least 5V/1.5A/7.5W.
- Install current firmware so you have the latest documented alarm, scene, scheduling, and stability changes.
