Nike does not reliably run a fixed size smaller or larger than adidas, New Balance or Puma. The dependable way to compare them is to measure your longer foot in centimeters and match that measurement to the chart for the brand and shoe category you are buying. A printed Nike “CM” label is not the same thing as measured foot length, and equal US, UK or EU labels can represent different internal fits.
Length is only half the decision. Width options, toe-box volume, upper materials, socks, and the shape of a particular model can change whether a nominally correct size feels comfortable. Use the model’s fit note and return policy after making the chart-based selection.
Why a Nike size cannot be converted perfectly to another brand
US, UK and EU numbers are label systems, not a universal measurement standard. Each manufacturer builds a shoe around its own last, chooses its own grading increments, and may size a running shoe differently from a casual or court shoe. Two shoes marked US 10 can therefore have similar lengths but noticeably different toe-box shapes or overall volume.
Official charts are useful because they translate a brand’s label into a heel-to-toe measurement. They do not prove that every model from that brand fits identically. Construction details such as a pointed or rounded toe, stretchy mesh, rigid overlays, a thick midsole, and the amount of padding around the heel all affect the sensation of size.
#1 Best Overall
- Mesh on upper adds breathability.
- Flywire cables provide a supportive feel when you tighten the laces.
- Plush foam midsole cushions each step.
- Grooves on the rubber outsole help your foot move naturally.
- DR2695-114
That is why “Nike runs small” is too broad to be a sizing rule. A particular Nike model may feel short or narrow to one person, while another model in the same labeled size feels roomy. The same variation occurs across adidas, New Balance and Puma.
Measure your feet before comparing charts
Measure at the end of the day, when feet are usually largest, while wearing the type of socks you expect to use. Use a hard, level floor rather than carpet.
- Place a sheet of paper with its short edge against a wall.
- Stand with your heel lightly touching the wall and your full weight on the foot.
- Mark the end of the longest toe and the rearmost point of the heel. Repeat for the other foot.
- Measure each heel-to-toe distance in centimeters and record both numbers.
- Use the longer foot when consulting a size chart. Do not average the two measurements.
If your measurement falls between two listed sizes, Nike’s published guidance says, “If the measurement is between sizes, we recommend sizing up.” Read that as a starting point, then check the individual shoe’s fit note, because a wide or unusually voluminous model may not need the same adjustment.

Nike’s chart: use Foot Length, not the box’s CM label
Nike makes an important distinction on its official men’s footwear chart: “Please note the CM size displayed on shoe boxes and labels is different than Foot Length (cm).” In other words, do not treat a printed CM designation as a direct statement of the shoe wearer’s measured foot length.

Enter the heel-to-toe result from your measurement in Nike’s Foot Length column, then read across to the US, UK and EU labels. The chart is available at Nike’s official men’s footwear size guide. Keep the category consistent: a men’s, women’s, children’s or sport-specific chart may use different label relationships.
For a practical example, suppose your longer foot measures 27.1 cm. You should locate 27.1 cm in the target brand’s chart rather than assume that every US 10 has the same internal length. The label is the result of the chart lookup, not the measurement itself.
How adidas sizing compares with Nike
adidas publishes heel-to-toe lengths alongside regional equivalents, making it straightforward to compare measurements rather than labels. Its current men’s chart lists US 10 as 27.1 cm, EU 44 and UK 9.5.

| Brand/chart information | What the published data tells you | How to use it against Nike |
|---|---|---|
| Nike | Use measured Foot Length (cm); the CM printed on boxes and labels is a different value. Between sizes, Nike recommends sizing up. | Measure first, then select the Nike row for the longer foot. |
| adidas men’s chart | US 10 corresponds to 27.1 cm, EU 44 and UK 9.5. | Use 27.1 cm as the comparison point, not the US 10 label alone. |
How New Balance sizing compares with Nike
New Balance gives length and width choices together. Its men’s chart lists a standard D width at US 10 as 11.0 cm and also provides narrow B, wide 2E and extra-wide 4E columns. This is a crucial difference from a simple length-only conversion: two people with the same heel-to-toe measurement may need different New Balance widths.
If a Nike shoe feels tight across the forefoot but the length is correct, moving to a longer size can create excess space in front of the toes. A better solution may be a width option, a different last, or a model with a roomier toe box. New Balance’s width letters are model and category dependent, so confirm the width row on the chart for the exact shoe.
| New Balance chart element | Published value or option | Implication for a Nike comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Men’s US 10 standard width | D width, 11.0 cm | Provides a length-and-width reference; do not infer that every Nike US 10 has the same forefoot width. |
| Alternative widths | Narrow B, wide 2E, extra-wide 4E | Choose width separately after confirming heel-to-toe length. |
How Puma Safety sizing compares with Nike
Puma Safety publishes centimeter ranges by EU, UK and US size and separates normal and extra-wide columns. Its men’s/unisex chart lists US 10 (EU 43) for a 27.0–27.5 cm foot length. Because this is a range rather than one single point, a 27.0 cm and a 27.5 cm foot can share the same nominal size while having different amounts of toe clearance.

Use the range to verify that your measured length falls within the size, then inspect whether the normal or extra-wide column suits your foot. Safety footwear may also use protective toe caps and structured uppers that reduce perceived room compared with a flexible trainer; do not transfer the fit of a casual Nike shoe to a safety model.

| Brand/chart element | Published example | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Puma Safety men’s/unisex | US 10 / EU 43 covers 27.0–27.5 cm | Your measured length and whether normal or extra-wide width is appropriate. |
| Nike | Foot Length rows; printed CM is a different value | The exact model’s fit note and the longer-foot measurement. |
Width can matter as much as length
Nike’s width guidance quantifies the additional toe-box girth offered by its wider options. Nike wide shoes provide approximately 1/4 inch (6.35 mm) more toe-box girth than regular width, while extra-wide shoes provide approximately 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) more. These figures describe girth, not a promise that every part of the shoe is proportionally wider.
Compare width independently from length across brands. New Balance lists B, D, 2E and 4E choices; Puma Safety separates normal and extra-wide; a particular adidas or Nike model may have its own width naming or only one available width. A correct length with the wrong width can cause pressure at the little toe, numbness across the forefoot, heel slip from over-sizing, or premature wear on the upper.
Signs you need more width
- Your toes touch the sidewalls while there is still adequate space in front.
- The upper bulges over the outer edge of the foot.
- You feel tingling or pressure that eases when you remove the shoe.
- You are tempted to go up a full length size solely to gain forefoot room.
Signs the shoe is too long
- Your heel lifts substantially during a normal walking stride.
- Your foot slides forward on downhill steps.
- You must overtighten the laces to keep the heel seated.
A reliable cross-brand ordering process
- Measure both feet. Record the longer heel-to-toe result in centimeters.
- Select the correct chart category. Match men’s, women’s, youth, unisex or safety footwear to the product.
- Look up length in the target brand’s chart. Start with Foot Length or heel-to-toe length, not a remembered US or EU label.
- Choose width separately. Check available width columns and the shoe’s toe-box or fit description.
- Read the product-page fit note. A model may be described as narrow, roomy, or true to size relative to that brand’s usual fit.
- Check the return policy before ordering. Confirm the allowed time, condition requirements and whether return shipping is covered in your region.
- Test indoors. Wear the intended socks, stand and walk, and check toe clearance, forefoot pressure and heel security before removing tags or using the shoe outdoors.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Copying the same US number between brands
A Nike US 10, adidas US 10 and another brand’s US 10 are not guaranteed to share the same measured length. Correct this by comparing each brand’s centimeter row.
Using the Nike box’s CM as foot length
Nike explicitly warns that the CM printed on boxes and labels differs from Foot Length (cm). Re-measure your foot and use the chart’s Foot Length field.
Best Value
- The mesh upper offers a comfortable, breathable feel.
- The foam midsole delivers intuitive cushioning through comfort-focused rocker geometry.
- The outsole has an intuitive Nike design and flex grooves in the forefoot that create a comfortable and cushioned effect as you run.
- Touch points at the heel and tongue create a natural feel as you take the shoes on and off.

Measuring only one foot
Small left-right differences are common. Use the longer foot so the shorter shoe does not dictate the size.
Measuring in the morning or on soft carpet
That can understate the space needed later in the day. Re-measure on a hard surface at the end of the day.
Ignoring socks and equipment
Thick hiking socks, orthotics and protective toe caps consume volume. Measure and test with the equipment you will actually use.

Last shape, upper material and intended activity vary by model. Treat a chart as the starting point and the model-specific fit information as the final adjustment.
What to do when the first pair does not fit
If your toes reach the front, verify that you measured the longer foot and then compare the next length option. If the length is good but the sides are tight, investigate a wider version or another model rather than automatically adding length. If the heel slips while the forefoot is comfortable, try the model’s heel-lock lacing instructions if provided; otherwise choose a shape that better matches your heel.
Keep the shoes indoors while evaluating them so you remain within the seller’s return conditions. Document the problem—front clearance, side pressure, heel movement or arch position—because that symptom tells you whether to change length, width, model or sock thickness.
Bottom line for Nike-to-brand comparisons
There is no universal Nike-to-adidas, New Balance or Puma conversion. Measure both feet in centimeters, use the longer result, and consult the target brand’s own chart. For Nike, use measured Foot Length rather than the CM printed on the box; for adidas, compare against its heel-to-toe figures such as 27.1 cm for men’s US 10; for New Balance, select width as well as length; and for Puma Safety, check the published centimeter range and normal versus extra-wide column. Model-specific construction and return terms remain the final safeguards.
