Nightjars have broad, slotted wing tips, a shape that a 2026 wind-tunnel study interprets as helping the birds generate lift during slow flight while reducing aerodynamic efficiency at faster speeds. The same study reports thrust from the outer wing during the upstroke in cruising flight. Owls provide a useful contrast because their wings and feather surfaces have been studied in connection with slow, quiet flight; swifts show how wings can change shape during a glide. These are comparisons of different evidence, not a standardized test ranking all these birds.
What the nightjar study says about wing shape
The most specific recent evidence in this comparison comes from a 2026 wind-tunnel and aerodynamic study of nightjars. It describes their wing tips as broad and slotted. The authors’ interpretation is that this configuration promotes lift during slow flight, with a cost in aerodynamic efficiency at faster speeds. In other words, the shape is presented as a trade-off: a feature that may be advantageous in one part of a bird’s flight envelope need not be equally advantageous when it flies faster.
“Slotted” describes a wing tip in which the outer flight feathers are separated rather than forming one continuous, smooth edge. The study’s interpretation connects the broad, slotted outline to lift in slow flight. That is an explanation of aerodynamic function, not a claim that every nightjar species has an identical wing or that every species uses it in precisely the same way. The available evidence does not establish a species-by-species profile for the whole nightjar group.
The faster-flight qualification matters. It would be misleading to call the nightjar wing simply “efficient” or “inefficient” without saying what kind of flight is being discussed. The study links the wing-tip arrangement with an apparent advantage for slow flight and a reduction in aerodynamic efficiency at higher speeds. It does not follow that the bird cannot cruise, or that the wing has no benefits at other speeds; the finding describes a relative aerodynamic trade-off, not a limit on the animal’s ability to fly.

Upstroke thrust is a separate finding
The study also reports thrust generated by the outer wing during the upstroke in cruising flight. A wingbeat has a downstroke and an upstroke, but the two phases need not contribute identically to the forces that move a bird. This result indicates that, in the cruising-flight conditions considered, the outer portion of the wing contributes forward force during the upward phase as well.
That observation should not be collapsed into the claim that broad, slotted tips alone cause the upstroke thrust. The study reports both the wing-tip interpretation and the outer-wing upstroke result, but the evidence summarized here does not establish that one feature is the direct cause of the other. Nor does the result mean that every part of every nightjar’s upstroke produces thrust under all flight conditions.
How to compare wings without treating unlike studies as one test
A useful comparison separates several questions that are easy to conflate: what outline the wing has, how much load it carries, how it is built, and what flight behavior or aerodynamic demand a study addresses. A wing can be discussed in terms of its tip geometry, its area relative to the bird’s weight, or its proportions from leading edge to trailing edge. Those measures describe different properties. One cannot substitute for another, and a number reported for one group cannot be used as a measurement of another.

- Wing outline and tip: The nightjar finding concerns broad, slotted tips. Owl research emphasizes large wings and specialized feather surfaces associated with quiet flight. Swift research in this source set concerns wing morphing during gliding rather than a fixed tip-shape ranking.
- Wing loading: This is a measure relating a bird’s weight to the area of its wings. Lower wing loading is generally discussed in relation to slower flight, but the figures available here are for owls, not nightjars or swifts.
- Aspect ratio: This describes wing proportions, comparing span with wing area. The owl review characterizes owl wings as having low aspect ratio; the available sources do not provide a directly comparable nightjar value.
- Construction: Birds’ wings use feathers, while bats have skin membranes supported by elongated digits. That difference changes how the wing is built and how it moves.
- Flight task: Slow flight, quiet flight, cruising, and gliding are not interchangeable conditions. A trait that is useful for one task is not automatically evidence of an advantage in another.
The studies and reviews cited for these groups do not establish a single protocol that measures nightjars, owls, swifts, and bats on the same basis. For that reason, the comparisons below supply context rather than a league table. In particular, the owl statistics should not be read as a nightjar baseline, and a study of swift gliding does not by itself say whether a swift’s wings are longer, broader, or more efficient than a nightjar’s.
Nightjars and owls: different evidence, different aerodynamic questions
Owls are the most useful bird comparison for readers asking about nocturnal flight, but their well-studied adaptations should not be transferred to nightjars by association. A 2016 review describes owl wings as relatively large, with low wing loading and low aspect ratio—traits associated with slow flight and noise reduction. The review also describes specialized leading-edge serrations, a velvety feather surface, and fringed feather edges. These features form a distinctive set of adaptations discussed in relation to quiet flight.
The nightjar study, by contrast, focuses on a broad, slotted wing tip and on aerodynamic behavior in slow and cruising flight. The supplied evidence does not show that nightjars share the owl’s full combination of serrations, velvety surfaces, and fringed edges. It is therefore not accurate to say that nightjars have owl-like silent-flight wings simply because both groups fly at night. Their shared association with nocturnal activity is not proof of identical wing design or function.

What the owl wing-loading range does—and does not—tell you
David H. Johnson’s 1997 USDA Forest Service report gives a wing-loading range of 0.211 to 0.545 g/cm² for 15 North American owl species. It is a useful numerical illustration of variation among those sampled owls. It is not a value for nightjars, and it should not be compared as if it were measured alongside the nightjar wind-tunnel results. The available material supplies no corresponding nightjar range or matched owl-versus-nightjar measurement.

Even within a group, a range is not a universal species value. Johnson’s reported interval applies to the 15 North American owl species in that report; it should not be generalized to every owl species worldwide. Nor does the interval by itself identify which owl is quieter, more maneuverable, or better at a particular flight task. Wing loading is one useful descriptor, not a complete explanation of flight performance.
Nightjars and swifts: why gliding studies do not provide a shape ranking
Swifts add a different perspective: wings can change shape in flight. A 2007 Nature study examines wing morphing during swift gliding. Morphing means that wing form is not necessarily fixed throughout a flight maneuver; a comparison based only on a static outline could miss changes that occur during the glide.

That result is relevant to how biologists think about bird wings, but it is not a direct nightjar-versus-swift measurement. The available sources do not provide standardized values that rank the two groups by span, area, aspect ratio, wing loading, or tip geometry under a shared method. Consequently, it would overstate the evidence to claim that the swift has a more efficient wing, a more pointed tip, or a particular advantage over the nightjar on the basis of these studies alone.
The practical distinction is between what a study investigates and what a reader might wish to compare. A swift gliding study can show that wing configuration changes during gliding. A nightjar wind-tunnel study can characterize aerodynamic findings for nightjars in its tested conditions. Without comparable measurements across both groups, neither study supplies the missing cross-species ranking.

Bats belong in a broader comparison of nocturnal flight, but they are mammals and their wings are not feathered bird wings. A 2009 review comparing bird and bat flight discusses differences in airframe design, wingbeat kinematics, and wake structure. Bird wings are built around feathers; bat wings are skin membranes supported by elongated fingers. The two structures therefore cannot be treated as variations of the same wing planform.

Those construction differences matter when interpreting a comparison. Wingbeat kinematics describe how a wing moves through a stroke; wake structure concerns the airflow left behind by that movement. A review that compares those subjects helps explain why nocturnal flight across birds and bats may involve different mechanics. It does not establish that the nightjar’s slotted tip performs the same function as any particular feature of a bat membrane, nor does the material here provide one shared performance measurement for nightjars and bats.
What is established—and what remains unmeasured here
The strongest evidence-supported answer is specific: a 2026 nightjar study describes broad, slotted tips, interprets them as promoting lift during slow flight with reduced aerodynamic efficiency at faster speeds, and reports outer-wing upstroke thrust during cruising flight. Owl literature supplies a separate account of wing and feather traits associated with slow, quiet flight. Swift research contributes an example of wing shape changing during gliding, while bird–bat literature explains why membrane wings require a distinct comparison.
What is not established is just as important for a fair comparison. The sources summarized here do not provide a single dataset that measures all relevant groups with one protocol across span, area, aspect ratio, wing loading, and tip geometry. They also do not establish that every nightjar species has the measured profile, or that all nocturnal birds share quiet-flight adaptations. The 2026 study’s final publication details are not specified in the available citation note, so claims beyond the reported abstract should be made cautiously.
Readers can therefore compare the groups by asking what feature and flight task each source actually addresses, rather than by trying to name one “best” nocturnal wing. Nightjar evidence centers on slow-flight lift and a cruising-speed efficiency trade-off; owl evidence centers on a distinct set of quiet-flight traits; swift evidence concerns wing morphing in a glide; and bat research concerns a mammalian membrane wing and different flight mechanics. These are complementary ways to understand nocturnal flight, not interchangeable measurements.
