A strong graduate tech résumé makes its evidence easy to verify. Instead of claiming to be “passionate” or listing every tool encountered in class, show what you built, the problem it addressed, your specific contribution, the technology you used and what changed as a result. Put the most relevant evidence near the top, tailor it honestly to each role and format the page so a person can scan it quickly.
The guidance below turns coursework, projects, internships, campus work and open-source contributions into a clear case that you are ready to contribute in a technology role.
What hiring managers need to find in the first scan
Hiring managers are trying to answer practical questions: Can this candidate do work relevant to the role? What have they actually done? What part did they own? Can they explain their decisions and work with other people? A résumé that answers those questions with evidence is stronger than one that simply repeats the job description.
- Applied technical ability: Projects, coursework, internships or other work should demonstrate how you used a language, framework, platform, method or tool.
- Problem understanding: Explain the user, stakeholder, business need, research question or constraint behind the work.
- Individual ownership: Make your contribution clear when a project involved classmates, colleagues or an open-source community.
- Results or learning: State what worked, changed, shipped, was measured or learned. Use a number only when you can defend how it was obtained.
- Collaboration: Show communication with teammates, users or stakeholders when it was part of the work, not as a generic claim.
- Readable evidence: Use headings, spacing and plain formatting that help both people and text parsers locate the important information.
The University of Texas at Austin’s technical résumé guidance warns that merely naming an application or technology can leave an employer unable to assess your contribution. Your bullets must supply the missing context.

Choose a structure that puts your strongest proof first
There is no immutable résumé order for every graduate. Select the sequence that makes your best, most relevant evidence visible earliest. For many entry-level software applications, a practical order is:
- Contact information and working portfolio links
- Relevant technical skills
- Selected projects
- Education and certifications
- Internships and other relevant experience
The University of Washington’s entry-level software résumé guide lists a header, optional summary, skills, projects, education or certifications and experience as useful components. It also notes that the order should serve your evidence and the role. If an internship is your strongest match, move experience above projects; if your projects are substantially more relevant, lead with them.
Header and contact details
Put your name, city and region (if relevant to the role), a professional email address, phone number and links to working GitHub, portfolio or live demonstrations in the header. Check every URL in the submitted file. A link that requires an employer to request access, opens an unfinished page or displays unrelated experiments weakens otherwise good evidence.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Optional summary
A summary is useful only when it adds targeted context that the rest of the page does not provide. Name the role you are seeking and two or three strengths you can substantiate below. For example, a graduate could identify a target as a “junior data analyst” and point to a capstone involving SQL, data cleaning and a documented stakeholder presentation. Do not use the summary for generic descriptions such as “hard-working team player,” and do not repeat a skills list in sentence form.

Technical skills
Group skills into readable categories such as Languages, Frameworks, Data, Cloud or Developer Tools. Include only technologies you can discuss and support with a project, course, work sample or other experience. Listing a tool you opened once invites an interview question you cannot answer and makes the whole list less credible.
Turn every project into evidence of work
Projects are often a graduate’s most relevant experience. Treat each one as a small work case study rather than a title followed by a technology stack. A strong project entry answers five questions:
- What: What did you build, analyze, automate or investigate?
- Why: Who needed it, what problem did it address or what question did it answer?
- Ownership: Which component or decisions were yours?
- How: Which languages, frameworks, methods, testing approaches or infrastructure mattered?
- Outcome: What changed, worked, shipped, was learned or was measured?
Use one to three bullets per selected project, with the most relevant project first. The examples below are patterns to adapt, not claims about real graduate outcomes.
Example: application project
- Built a scheduling web application for student organizations to replace email-based sign-ups; owned the authentication flow and calendar interface using React and a REST API.
- Interviewed prospective users, translated recurring scheduling conflicts into validation rules and documented the trade-offs in the project repository.
Example: data project
- Cleaned and analyzed a public transportation dataset to investigate service delays; wrote reproducible Python and SQL workflows and presented the findings with an interactive dashboard.
- Explained missing-data decisions and limitations so a reader could distinguish measured results from interpretation.
Example: team project
- Worked in a four-person team to prototype an accessibility feature; implemented keyboard navigation, reviewed pull requests and coordinated usability feedback with test participants.
- Integrated the feature into the shared build and recorded unresolved constraints for the next iteration.
If you have a defensible metric, include it with its basis: for example, the number of records processed in a script, the test cases covered or the response time measured in a documented test. If no reliable number exists, describe scope or result precisely rather than inventing one.

Show experience beyond formal internships
Internships are valuable, but they are not the only source of credible evidence. The University of Maryland Global Campus Career Services guidance recommends emphasizing accomplishments and problem solving instead of copying routine duties. Relevant campus employment, volunteer work, freelance assignments, part-time jobs, open-source contributions, hackathons and academic projects can all belong on a technology résumé when their connection to the target role is clear.
Rewrite duties as contributions
Replace “responsible for maintaining the department website” with the specific work you performed, such as updating a content workflow, resolving a recurring issue or documenting a handoff. Do not imply that you designed a system if you only followed an established procedure. Accuracy about scope is more persuasive than inflated ownership.
Make teamwork concrete
“Collaborated with a team” says little by itself. Name the interaction: clarified requirements with a student organization, reviewed a teammate’s code, presented findings to a nontechnical audience, coordinated a release or incorporated user feedback. Include stakeholders and constraints when they shaped your decisions.
Protect confidential information
If an internship or client agreement limits disclosure, describe the problem, your role, methods and nonconfidential outcomes without naming protected systems or data. The University of Texas at Austin advises students with nondisclosure agreements to consult a supervisor or mentor about what they may disclose. Read its technical résumé bullet guidance before publishing details.

Tailor the document without stuffing keywords
Start with the role description and identify the capabilities it genuinely prioritizes. Then select the subset of your skills, projects, courses and experience that demonstrates those capabilities. Tailoring is prioritization, not copying every phrase.
- Mark the role’s recurring technical terms, deliverables and collaboration expectations.
- Match the employer’s terminology when it accurately describes work you have done or studied. Spell out an acronym once when that improves clarity.
- Move the strongest matching project or experience higher on the page.
- Rewrite a bullet to make the relevant method or outcome explicit, while preserving the truth about your contribution.
- Remove unrelated tools and weak examples that distract from the evidence.
For example, if a posting asks for testing and a listed project includes automated tests, name the testing approach in that project bullet and link to the repository. Do not add a framework you have never used merely because it appears in the posting. The Washington and UMGC guidance both stress truthful terminology and evidence rather than keyword accumulation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Format for fast human reading and reliable parsing
Use clear section headings, consistent dates, ordinary fonts, readable spacing and a simple single-column layout. Keep bullets parallel in structure and begin them with precise action verbs. Avoid decorative graphics, text embedded in images, multi-column designs that scramble reading order and dense blocks of prose. These choices improve accessibility and reduce the chance that a text parser will misread your information.

One page or more?
One page is a useful default for many entry-level applications because it forces prioritization. It is not a universal law: employer instructions, country conventions and the amount of relevant evidence can justify a different length. Use this decision table before cutting meaningful proof.
| Choice | When it helps | Risk to check |
|---|---|---|
| One page | You have a small set of highly relevant projects, courses and experience. | Removing context until projects become unexplained titles. |
| More than one page | You have substantial, directly relevant internships, research, open-source work or publications. | Keeping unrelated coursework or repeating the same skill in several sections. |
| Summary included | A short, role-specific statement adds context not obvious from the evidence. | Using space for generic traits or duplicating the skills section. |
| Summary omitted | Your project and experience bullets already establish your target and strengths. | Leaving the reader unsure which role you want when the application context is broad. |
Free templates and computer science and data science examples are available from University of Texas at Austin Career Services. Treat them as layout starting points, not scripts: replace sample content with your own evidence and keep the final design easy to parse.
Make portfolio links earn their space
A repository or live demo should let a reviewer verify the résumé claim quickly. Give each selected project a descriptive name and a short README that explains its purpose, your contribution, setup or demo steps, technologies and known limitations. Remove broken links, private repositories that cannot be viewed and unfinished pages that do not represent your current standard.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsLink only to work you can explain in an interview. Be ready to discuss architecture, a difficult decision, testing, a failure and what you would improve. A smaller set of maintained projects is more useful than a long list of abandoned repositories.
Run a claim-and-quality check before sending
Use this final review for every tailored version:
- Does the first section show the role-relevant evidence rather than a generic objective?
- Can each technical skill be located in a project, course, job or work sample?
- Does every project state the problem or purpose, your contribution, the important tools and an outcome or concrete scope?
- Are team and stakeholder interactions described specifically where they mattered?
- Can you defend every number, date, result and ownership claim?
- Are dates, spelling, capitalization and punctuation consistent?
- Do portfolio, repository and demo links open without special permission?
- Have you checked the submitted file, not only the editable draft, for page breaks, missing symbols and text order?
- Does the résumé follow the employer’s requested format and naming instructions?
Ask a mentor, instructor or classmate to identify the strongest evidence after a quick read. If they cannot find it, improve the ordering or bullet specificity before adding more content.
A repeatable workflow for each application
- Copy the job description into a working note and mark its real requirements.
- Choose two to four projects or experiences that demonstrate those requirements.
- Rewrite only the relevant bullets using the what, why, ownership, how and outcome questions.
- Verify every technology, result, date and link.
- Apply the simple layout and check the exported file’s readability.
- Save the tailored version with a clear filename and retain a record of which evidence you submitted.
This process keeps tailoring efficient while protecting the quality that matters most: a hiring manager can see what you did, why it mattered and how you know it worked.
