NeuNMR combines total neutron scattering and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in one sample chamber to study liquid-phase reactions inside catalyst pores. Its 2018 proof of concept followed the reduction of benzene-d6 with D2 over a 3 wt% platinum-on-MCM-41 catalyst. The approach pairs neutron-scattering data about structure with NMR measurements of composition over time, collected under the same sample temperature and pressure.
What NeuNMR is designed to measure
Heterogeneous catalysis involves a catalyst in a different phase from the reactants, such as a solid catalyst acting on a liquid reaction mixture. Understanding what happens inside catalyst pores can require both structural context and a record of how the reacting mixture changes.
NeuNMR is an integrated total neutron scattering–NMR setup for liquid-phase reactions in confined catalyst pores. Neutron scattering contributes structural information, while NMR provides quantitative composition information as a function of time. Together, those measurements can help researchers interpret changes in the liquid and pore environment during a reaction. The 2018 study describing the setup presents it as a way to examine physicochemical changes in the liquid phase and catalyst pore space.

Why put both techniques in one sample chamber?
Measurements made in separate instruments can differ in temperature, pressure, or other experimental conditions. That makes it harder to determine whether differences between structural observations and reaction composition reflect the chemistry or the measurement setup.

NeuNMR uses a shared sample chamber so neutron scattering and NMR can examine the reaction at the same temperature and pressure. Michael D. Mantle, identified in contemporary coverage as a University of Cambridge researcher, explained that matching conditions matter because NMR supplies composition as a function of time for interpreting the neutron analysis. The 2018 report also quotes catalysis expert Richard Catlow of University College London: “Neutron scattering is proving increasingly useful in catalytic studies”.
What the published demonstration tested
The proof of concept studied the heterogeneous reduction of benzene-d6 with deuterium gas (D2) using 3 wt% Pt/MCM-41: platinum supported on MCM-41, a porous silica material. That formulation is the catalyst used in this demonstration, not a general recommendation or a performance benchmark.

- Includes: portable spectrophotometer, printed basic instrument manual, dust cover, 1-in. square matched glass sample cells, AA alkaline batteries 4/pk, and a four-type adapter set.
The study showed how the combined measurements could be applied to a liquid-phase catalytic reaction. The authors proposed that the method might also help investigate more complex reactions with multiple pathways, including questions about confinement, selectivity, and reactivity. Those are potential applications; the reported demonstration does not establish that the apparatus has already been used to study every such case.

| Approach | What it contributes | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Neutron scattering within NeuNMR | Structural information about the sample and catalyst pore environment | Helps place reaction changes in a structural context |
| NMR within NeuNMR | Quantitative composition as a function of time | Tracks how the reaction mixture changes during the experiment |
| Separate neutron-scattering and NMR experiments | Each technique can provide its respective information | Differences in experimental conditions can make direct comparison more ambiguous |
| NeuNMR shared-chamber arrangement | Structural and time-dependent composition information under matching sample temperature and pressure | Supports interpretation across the two measurements, while requiring a specialized integrated setup |
The methods remain complementary rather than interchangeable: one does not simply duplicate the other. A 2025 review of time-domain NMR in liquid-phase heterogeneous catalysis discusses broader NMR applications such as characterizing wetted porosity and surface area, measuring fluid–catalyst adsorption energy, mapping liquid distribution in packed beds, and examining fluid transport in catalyst materials. These examples describe NMR in catalysis generally, not results from the specific NeuNMR apparatus. The review provides that wider context.

Engineering and sensitivity constraints
Integrating the instruments presents practical constraints beyond the scientific question. The 2018 coverage describes limited space within the neutron chamber, with the NMR magnet inside and its electronic console outside. Because the setup operates under vacuum, heat generation and dissipation also require careful management. The contemporary report notes that reaction choice can affect sensitivity: hydrogen/deuterium exchange and the presence of solvent are among the factors researchers must consider for both neutron and NMR measurements.
- Space: The chamber must accommodate the sample and the components placed inside it.
- Heat: Vacuum operation makes heat generation and removal important design considerations.
- Isotopes and exchange: Hydrogen/deuterium exchange can influence the sensitivity of the measurements.
- Solvent: Solvent presence is another factor that can affect neutron and NMR sensitivity.
What was proposed next—and what is not established here
In 2018, continuous-flow testing and possible combinations with synchrotron radiation were discussed as future directions. That report does not establish that either development was subsequently completed. The evidence described here supports NeuNMR as a specialized method demonstrated on one catalytic reduction, not as a broadly validated platform for all liquid-phase catalytic systems.
