Netflix Standard with ads is the service’s lower-price subscription option: you get a 1080p catalog, two simultaneous supported devices and downloads on two devices, while watching a few short commercial breaks per hour in most shows and movies. In the United States, Netflix’s current Help Center lists it at $8.99 per month. Ads generally cannot be skipped, some titles are unavailable because of licensing restrictions, and the plan does not work on every device or in every country.
The details below reflect Netflix’s US plan information and help guidance available in 2026. Prices, catalog rights, device support and plan availability can change by country, package or add-on, so check the country-specific plan page before paying.
What Netflix Standard with ads actually is
Standard with ads is a regular Netflix subscription tier with commercial breaks built into playback. It is not a separate streaming app or a temporary trial. The trade-off is straightforward: the monthly price is lower than Netflix’s ad-free tiers, but selected shows and movies include advertisements before or during playback.
Netflix says viewers should expect “a few short ads per hour.” The service attempts to place mid-roll breaks at natural plot breaks rather than interrupting a scene at random. Some newly released movies may show advertising only before the film starts. The exact number and timing of breaks can therefore differ between titles.

Most of the catalog is available, but licensing agreements prevent Netflix from offering a small number of titles on the ad-supported experience. A lock icon identifies a title you cannot play on that plan. The plan itself is also unavailable in some countries, so a US description should not be treated as a worldwide feature list.
US price and plan comparison
Netflix’s current US-dollar comparison lists three relevant tiers. These are recurring monthly prices shown by Netflix’s US Help Center in 2026; taxes, regional pricing and future changes can affect what you are charged.
| Plan | US price per month | Advertising | Video quality | Simultaneous devices | Devices with downloads |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard with ads | $8.99 | Commercial breaks in selected shows and movies | 1080p (Full HD) | 2 supported devices at a time | 2 supported devices |
| Standard | $19.99 | Ad-free for regular shows and movies | 1080p (Full HD) | 2 supported devices at a time | 2 supported devices |
| Premium | $26.99 | Ad-free for regular shows and movies | 4K UHD with HDR and spatial audio | 4 supported devices at a time | 6 supported devices |
“Simultaneous devices” means the number of supported screens that can stream at the same time. It is separate from the number of devices on which you can store downloads. Netflix also notes that prices and extra-member eligibility can vary by country, package or add-on.

How advertising appears while you watch
Before and during programs
Ads can play before a show or movie begins and during selected titles. Netflix’s guidance describes the load as a few short ads per hour, with breaks generally positioned around natural story pauses. A newly released movie can be an exception: its ads may run before playback rather than interrupting the film.
Ads are not skippable during playback
You cannot skip or fast-forward an ad while watching a TV show or movie. You can pause playback during the ad. When playback is paused, ad breaks are marked on the progress bar, and the number of ads in the current break appears in the upper-right corner when that break starts. Those indicators let you see where an interruption is scheduled and how many spots are in it.

How Netflix chooses ads
Netflix says ad selection may use your interactions with Netflix, your general location and information you provide to Netflix. Unless you opt out, selection may also use your interactions with unaffiliated third-party apps or websites. Turning off behavioral advertising does not remove advertising from the plan; it changes how ads may be selected, not whether breaks occur.
Profiles and games
Netflix says ads are not currently shown on Kids profiles or in Netflix games. That exception does not turn the entire account into an ad-free account: eligible shows and movies watched on other profiles still follow the plan’s advertising rules.

Locked titles
A small number of shows and movies are unavailable on Standard with ads because Netflix does not hold the necessary advertising rights for those titles. Netflix displays a lock icon on affected entries. If a title is important to you, check its availability from the profile and plan you intend to use rather than assuming that every item in the general Netflix catalog is playable.
Country differences
The ad-supported experience is not offered in every region. Even where it is offered, the catalog, monthly price, extra-member rules and available packages can differ. A US price or feature should not be used to estimate the cost or catalog in another country. Recheck Netflix’s current country-specific plan page at the time you subscribe or change plans.
Streaming quality and screens
In the US comparison, Standard with ads provides 1080p (Full HD) video. It permits viewing on two supported devices at once. That covers common two-person households, but a third simultaneous stream would exceed the plan’s listed allowance.

- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
Premium is the tier in Netflix’s comparison that adds 4K UHD, HDR and spatial audio, as well as four simultaneous devices. Standard keeps 1080p and two simultaneous devices while removing regular advertising. These differences matter more than the nominal screen count if your television and sound system support higher-resolution or immersive formats.
Downloads: the limits people often miss
Two supported devices, with a monthly cap
Netflix lists downloads on two supported devices at a time for Standard with ads. Separately, Netflix limits an ad-supported plan to 15 downloads per device per calendar month, across two total devices. The allowance resets on the first day of each month. The wording is a per-device monthly limit, so plan carefully if you use downloads on both a phone and a tablet or on two other supported devices.
This is a download limit, not a statement that every downloaded episode will remain available indefinitely. Individual titles can also have normal Netflix download expiration or viewing restrictions shown in the app; the ad-supported-specific rule to keep in mind is the 15-download-per-device calendar-month allowance.
Smart Downloads are unavailable
Automatic Smart Downloads features do not work on ad-supported plans. That includes Download Next Episode and Downloads for You. You must select the content you want manually, which is important if you normally rely on automatic episode replacement or recommendations while traveling.
Planning a trip
Before travel, download the specific episodes or movies you need, keep each device within its monthly allowance and leave room for the rest of the calendar month. If you have already reached the cap on a device, deleting an existing file does not change the stated monthly allowance; the reset occurs on the first day of the next month.

Device compatibility and casting
Check compatibility before subscribing
A small percentage of TVs and other devices cannot use the ad-supported experience because their Netflix app or operating system cannot be updated to software that supports ads. This is a software-support limitation, not a signal-quality problem.
- Open Netflix on the television or streaming device you plan to use.
- Use the app’s Plan Compatibility check to see whether that device supports the ad-supported experience.
- If the check indicates that the app or operating system cannot be updated, use another supported device or choose a plan that your current hardware supports.
Netflix supports a range of existing televisions, streaming devices, phones, tablets, cable boxes and game consoles, but compatibility is model- and software-dependent. Checking the actual device is more reliable than assuming that a product category is supported.
Phone-to-TV casting and mirroring are not supported
On the ad-supported experience, Netflix says a phone or tablet cannot be cast or mirrored to a TV. If you usually start playback on a mobile device and send it to a television, plan to use the Netflix app installed directly on the TV or streaming device instead. This limitation is separate from ordinary simultaneous-device limits.
Live events follow different advertising rules
Netflix says live events are included with every plan at no additional charge. They may contain commercial breaks across all plans, including ad-free tiers. Therefore, selecting an ad-free plan does not guarantee that a live broadcast will have no commercials.

How to decide whether the plan fits you
Standard with ads is a practical fit when
- Your priority is the lowest listed US monthly price and you can tolerate short, unskippable interruptions.
- 1080p is sufficient for your television and you need no more than two simultaneous streams.
- You download occasionally and can work within 15 downloads per device per calendar month.
- You watch mainly on supported devices that pass Netflix’s compatibility check and do not depend on mobile casting.
Consider an ad-free tier when
- You find interruptions unacceptable or need to fast-forward through every part of a program without ad breaks.
- You depend on Smart Downloads, Download Next Episode or Downloads for You.
- You regularly need more than two simultaneous screens or more download-device capacity.
- You own a 4K HDR television and want the Premium tier’s listed 4K UHD, HDR and spatial-audio features.
Check the catalog first if one title matters
Because licensing restrictions affect only some titles, the most useful test is concrete: search for the show or movie you plan to watch and look for a lock icon while using the ad-supported option. A plan can be good value overall and still be unsuitable if the specific content you expect is unavailable.
Pre-subscription checklist
- Confirm that the country where you will use Netflix offers the ad-supported experience.
- Verify the current local price; the $8.99 figure is Netflix’s listed US price in 2026.
- Run the Plan Compatibility check on each television or streaming device you expect to use.
- Decide whether you can live with unskippable ads before and during selected shows and movies.
- Check whether your viewing depends on mobile casting or mirroring, which this experience does not support.
- Estimate your download needs against the 15-per-device calendar-month limit and remember that Smart Downloads are unavailable.
- If live sports, concerts or other live events matter to you, allow for commercial breaks regardless of plan.
Common problems and what to do
A title shows a lock icon
The lock indicates a licensing restriction on the ad-supported experience. It is not normally fixed by reinstalling the app or changing video quality. Choose another available title or review whether an ad-free tier makes the title accessible in your region; Netflix’s catalog rights determine the result.
The plan will not play on a particular TV
Run the Plan Compatibility check in the Netflix TV or streaming-device app. If the app or operating system cannot be updated to an ads-compatible version, that device cannot use the experience. Use a supported device with current software rather than treating the issue as a network failure.
You cannot cast from a phone
That behavior is expected on the ad-supported experience. Casting and mirroring from a phone or tablet to a TV are not supported, so open Netflix directly on the television or streaming device.
You have reached the download allowance
The ad-supported plan permits 15 downloads per device per calendar month, with two total devices covered. The allowance resets on the first day of the next month. Smart Downloads cannot be enabled to work around the cap.
You see commercials on a live event with an ad-free plan
Netflix permits commercial breaks during live events on every plan. The presence of a break during a live broadcast does not necessarily indicate a billing or account error.
Bottom line
In the US, Standard with ads exchanges a listed $8.99 monthly price for 1080p video, two simultaneous supported devices and downloads on two devices, with a few short, generally unskippable ads per hour in eligible shows and movies. The decision hinges on four checks: whether your must-watch titles are unlocked, whether your devices pass Netflix’s compatibility test, whether the download cap and lack of Smart Downloads affect you, and whether you can accept advertising—including possible breaks in live events.
