Netflix Household sharing is intended for devices connected to the internet at the main residence where an account is watched. A person who lives elsewhere needs a separate Netflix account or an invitation as a paid extra member. On eligible plans, Standard permits one extra member and Premium permits up to two. Each extra member receives separate credentials and can watch on one device at a time.
What a Netflix Household is
Netflix defines a Household as “a collection of devices connected to the internet at the main place where you watch Netflix.” The account is designed for people using Netflix at that residence, not for unrestricted sharing with people who live at other addresses.
That distinction matters when a family member moves out, a partner maintains another home, or a friend uses the account regularly from a different internet connection. Netflix’s Help Center says, “You may not share your Netflix account outside of your household.” An account owner can still provide access to someone elsewhere, but the supported method is an extra-member slot on an eligible plan, or a completely separate membership.
Netflix said in 2023 that more than 100 million households were sharing accounts. The extra-member system is its way of converting some of that off-site use into separately credentialed access while keeping payment responsibility with the original account owner.

Can you share Netflix with someone who does not live with you?
Yes, but not by simply handing over the household account indefinitely. The person must either open their own Netflix account or be invited by the owner as an extra member. The owner pays for the extra-member slot, while the invited person uses a separate login and password.
An extra member is still tied to the account owner’s country. Activation must occur in the same country where the owner created the Netflix account. Netflix also warns that a VPN, proxy, or unblocker can prevent activation. Someone who genuinely lives in another country cannot use an extra-member invitation to bypass that restriction.
Which plans support extra members?
Eligibility depends on the plan and on how Netflix bills the account. The core slot limits are:

Netflix’s plan catalog and pricing vary by country and can change. The retrieved pricing view showed amounts in Malaysian ringgit, so those figures should not be treated as US prices. Check the plan and account pages displayed for your country for the current monthly charge, taxes, video quality, download allowances, and household streaming limits.
What an extra member gets
The extra member is not merely another profile on the owner’s household login. Netflix provides a separate account identity with its own email address or phone-based sign-in, password, and profile. The invited person can receive a newly created profile or, when eligible, move an existing profile into the new extra-member account.

Personalized viewing
The extra member’s profile keeps personalized recommendations and viewing activity separate from the owner’s household profiles. A transferred profile can retain recommendations, viewing history, My List, saved games, and settings, subject to Netflix’s transfer rules.
One-device viewing
Netflix documents one-device-at-a-time viewing for an extra-member account. The person may sign in on supported devices, but the extra-member membership itself is not a license for simultaneous viewing on several devices. Anyone who needs multiple concurrent streams must use a full Netflix plan in their own name.
What the owner pays
The invited person does not become the payer. Netflix describes extra members as having “their own account and password, but their membership is paid for by the person who invited them to share their Netflix account.” The owner sees the added charge in the Netflix billing flow and remains responsible for it.
How to add an extra member
The owner completes the invitation from Netflix account settings. Labels can differ slightly by device, but the process follows this sequence:
- Open account settings. Sign in as the primary account owner and choose the option labeled Buy an extra member slot.
- Review the new charge. Netflix shows the revised payment amount before confirmation. The first charge can be prorated, and Netflix notes that adding the slot may change the account’s billing date.
- Enter the recipient’s details. Provide the invitee’s name and email address. In some television flows, Netflix also permits a phone number.
- Send the invitation. Netflix generates a unique invitation link and sends it to the recipient.
- Activate the membership. The invitee opens the link, completes activation in the account owner’s country, and sets up the extra-member sign-in.
- Choose a profile. The invitee either accepts a newly created profile or transfers an eligible existing profile.
If the owner has reached the plan’s slot limit, the buy option will not offer another member. An ad-supported plan or unsupported package billing can also hide the feature entirely.

Transferring an existing Netflix profile
Profile transfer is optional. It is useful when the invited person already has a profile on the owner’s account and wants to preserve their Netflix history instead of starting from zero.

- Personalized recommendations
- Viewing history
- My List entries
- Saved games
- Profile settings
Netflix does not permit every profile to move. Kids profiles, PIN-protected profiles, and the account’s main profile cannot be transferred. In those cases, the extra member must use a newly created profile. A transfer also does not remove the account owner’s responsibility for the slot charge.
Extra-member limits compared with a full account
An extra-member slot is narrower than an independent full membership in two important ways: Netflix limits it to one device at a time, and the owner of the main account pays for it. The slot is therefore suited to one person who needs their own recommendations and credentials, not to a household that wants several simultaneous streams.
The owner’s plan still determines the available plan features and the number of extra-member slots. Standard supports one slot, while Premium supports up to two. The plan’s video-quality, download, and simultaneous-stream specifications should be checked on the current local plan page because Netflix changes offerings by country and over time.

Changing, replacing, or canceling a member
Replacing the recipient
Netflix allows the owner to change an extra member up to twice in a calendar month. Replacing the recipient removes the current member immediately, so that person loses access as soon as the replacement is confirmed. Give the current user time to finish any viewing or move needed information before making the change.
Canceling one slot
Canceling an extra-member slot does not necessarily stop access at once. Netflix says the current member can continue watching through the end of the existing billing period. The slot then ends at the next renewal rather than renewing for another period.
Canceling the main account
If the primary Netflix membership is canceled, its extra-member slots are canceled as well. An extra member cannot keep that slot independently after the underlying account ends; they must start or use a separate full membership.

The invitation link fails
Confirm that the link is the unique invitation sent by Netflix and that it has not already been used. The owner can resend an invitation from account settings if the recipient opened an old or incomplete message. Sign out of unrelated Netflix accounts before opening the link so the activation attaches to the intended recipient.

The account has no extra-member option
Check the plan first. Ad-supported plans cannot create extra members. If the plan appears eligible, verify whether a cable, mobile, internet, or other package provider handles billing; some third-party arrangements do not support the feature. Reaching the Standard or Premium slot limit also removes the ability to buy another slot.

Activation is blocked
Review the country and network conditions before trying again. The recipient must activate in the same country where the owner originally created the Netflix account, and Netflix may block VPN, proxy, or unblocker connections. Use a normal local connection, disable those services, and restart the invitation process.
The recipient cannot transfer a profile
Check whether the selected profile is a Kids profile, protected by a PIN, or the account’s main profile. Netflix excludes all three categories from transfer. Create a new profile instead, then allow Netflix to build recommendations from the new member’s viewing.
The charge looks different from the advertised amount
Review the confirmation screen and the account’s billing date. Netflix notes that proration or a billing-date change may apply when a slot is purchased. Taxes, country, currency, and package billing can also affect the amount shown to the owner.
Choosing between an extra member and a separate account
An extra member is usually the practical choice when one person lives elsewhere in the same country, needs an individual login, and is satisfied with one-device-at-a-time viewing. It keeps payment centralized and can preserve an eligible profile’s history.
A separate full account is the better fit when the person lives in another country, needs simultaneous streams, uses an ad-supported plan that cannot add slots, or wants billing and plan control independent of the original household. It is also the fallback when a package-billed account does not expose extra-member support.
