Netflix downloads are temporary offline copies stored in the Netflix app on the device that downloaded them. Whether you can download a particular title, how long it stays available, and how many downloads or devices you can use depend on separate rules: device compatibility, title availability, your plan, and licensing. Netflix does not publish one universal expiration period for every download.
What a Netflix download is—and where you can watch it
A download lets you watch an eligible Netflix title offline through the Netflix app. It is stored on the device used to download it, rather than becoming a file you can move to another phone, tablet, or computer. Netflix says a downloaded title can be watched under any Netflix profile on that same device. Netflix Help Center: How to download titles to watch offline
Downloads are temporary. They can expire, and not every title is available for download. Look for the Downloads icon on a title, or use the app’s option for browsing downloadable titles. The presence of a Netflix listing does not by itself mean that title can be saved for offline viewing. Netflix’s download guidance

You need the latest Netflix app. Netflix cautions that older operating-system versions may not support downloads, so a device in one of these categories is not automatically guaranteed to work. Netflix’s guidance identifies categories, not a guarantee for every model or OS version. Check that your device can run the current app before relying on it for a trip or another period without internet access. Netflix Help Center device and app requirements
Storage is another practical constraint: the download must remain on the device where you saved it. Netflix recommends using Wi-Fi to reduce mobile data use. If you expect to download several episodes or films, check that the device has enough available storage and connect to Wi-Fi before starting. Netflix Help Center download guidance
How many downloads can you have?
There are two different limits that are easy to confuse: how many active downloads are stored at once and, for ad-supported plans, how many downloads you can make during a calendar month. Netflix states that users can have up to 100 active downloads at a time per device, with the number of devices determined by the plan. Its ad-supported plan has a separate monthly allowance of 15 total downloads per device. Netflix Help Center: active download limit Netflix Help Center: “Download Max Reached”
| Rule | What it limits | Who it applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 100 active downloads at a time per device | The number of downloaded titles that can be active on a device at once. The plan also determines how many devices may hold downloads. | Netflix’s general download guidance; it does not make the device allowance identical across plans. Netflix |
| 15 total downloads per device per calendar month | The number of downloads made on each device during that month, not the number of titles that can remain stored at once. | Ad-supported plans. The allowance resets on the first day of each month. Netflix |
The 15-download allowance is not a 15-title storage cap. It counts downloads made during the calendar month, while the 100-active-download rule concerns downloads that are active at one time. Netflix’s example error refers to a plan that supports 15 monthly downloads per device for two total devices; that is an example in the error message, not a universal device count for all plans. Check your own account’s plan information for your device allowance. Netflix’s “Download Max Reached” explanation Netflix’s active-download guidance
Why do Netflix downloads expire?
A downloaded title is licensed for offline viewing only for a period of time, and that period varies. Netflix does not give one fixed expiration window that applies to every film or episode. Its guidance says you can watch a download as many times as you like before it expires; the relevant time remaining is associated with the individual download. Netflix Help Center: “Downloaded title says ‘Expired’”
Expiration and title availability are separate issues. If a download expires while the title is still available and your account is eligible to download it again, Netflix’s troubleshooting advice is to delete the expired copy and download the title again. If the title has left Netflix, you cannot renew that download or download the title again from Netflix. Netflix’s expired-download guidance

Licensing can also limit the number of times a title can be downloaded or renewed. Re-downloading is therefore not guaranteed just because you previously had a working copy. Netflix may show a date indicating when another download is allowed; if the limit has been reached, the available alternatives are to watch the title while connected to the internet or choose something else. Some films or shows can be downloaded only a limited number of times per account per year. This is a title-specific licensing restriction, not a rule that imposes the same yearly limit on every Netflix download. The warning can vary: Netflix says an iPhone or iPad notice may say the title cannot be downloaded again for up to a year, while an Android notice may give a date before which it can only be downloaded one more time. Follow the date or limit shown for that title rather than assuming that all downloads follow the same schedule. Netflix Help Center title download-limit notice Netflix Help Center title download-limit notice
If you reach a title’s limit, deleting the existing copy does not necessarily restore the ability to download it. Until Netflix permits another download, stream the title online if it remains available, or select a different title for offline viewing. Netflix’s guidance on download and renewal limits
What “downloads on too many devices” means
The message “You have downloads on too many devices” means the number of devices holding Netflix downloads has reached the maximum for your plan. It is a device-slot restriction, not a statement that one device has exceeded its active-title allowance. Netflix directs users to its Manage Download Devices page to check the plan’s current limit. The actual number depends on your plan, so do not infer it from the two-device example in the ad-supported monthly-limit message. Netflix Help Center: “You have downloads on too many devices”
To make room for another device, remove downloads from a device that is already using a download slot, or delete all downloads directly from a device. Netflix provides app and browser paths for removing downloads from another device in its help article. Use the directions there for your device and account rather than assuming the same menu labels apply everywhere. Netflix’s device-limit removal instructions
Troubleshoot the message you see
Start with the wording of the error. Different messages point to different limits; deleting a title will not solve every problem.

“Download Max Reached”
If you have an ad-supported plan, check whether you have used the 15-download-per-device allowance for the current calendar month. It resets on the first day of the next month. This monthly limit is distinct from the active-download count. Netflix Help Center: “Download Max Reached”
“You have downloads on too many devices”
Check the plan’s device allowance on Manage Download Devices. Remove downloads from another device or delete downloads on a device to free a slot. Netflix’s device-limit instructions
A title says “Expired”
Delete the expired download and try downloading it again if the title is still on Netflix. If it is unavailable, or licensing prevents another download, you cannot renew the copy through Netflix. Netflix Help Center: expired downloads
A title can only be downloaded one more time, or shows a future date
Treat that notice as a restriction on that specific title. Follow the date or remaining-download count Netflix displays; until then, stream online if available or choose another downloadable title. Netflix Help Center title-specific limit notices Netflix Help Center title-specific limit notices
The download option is missing
Confirm that the device category is supported, the Netflix app is current, and the operating system is not too old for downloads. Then check whether that title has a Downloads icon. A missing download option may reflect title eligibility, not a problem with your plan or device. Netflix Help Center: supported devices and downloadable titles
What happens if you cancel Netflix?
Netflix says canceling membership deletes downloads from devices. If you restart your membership later, you will need to download titles again rather than relying on the former offline copies. Whether a title can be downloaded at that later point still depends on its availability and any applicable licensing limit. Netflix Help Center cancellation and downloads guidance
Quick Recap
Before you rely on downloads offline
- Use a device category Netflix lists and make sure it can run the latest Netflix app.
- Check that each title has a Downloads icon; Netflix does not make every title downloadable.
- Download over Wi-Fi when possible, and leave enough storage on the device.
- Keep the monthly ad-supported allowance, active-title limit, and plan device limit distinct; each addresses a different restriction.
- Do not assume a download will last a fixed number of days or that it can always be renewed. Review the title’s status and Netflix’s notice when offline access matters.
