Neanderthals and other Pleistocene hominins shaped wood into hunting weapons, including pointed spears. The surviving evidence shows deliberate selection, shaping and maintenance of wooden objects, but it does not identify the maker of every artifact or prove exactly how each was used. The Schöningen weapons are often dated to about 300,000 years ago and associated with Homo heidelbergensis; a competing estimate reported in 2025 places them closer to 200,000 years ago, when Neanderthal use becomes plausible. That dating and attribution remain unsettled.

What the wooden tools tell us

Wood rarely survives for hundreds of thousands of years. Most prehistoric wooden tools disappeared, so the few preserved finds provide unusually direct evidence of technologies that are largely missing from the archaeological record. They show that early people could select timber, shape it for a purpose, and maintain at least some implements after manufacture. They do not show how common wooden tools were, or establish that all the tools found at a site belonged to the same hominin species.

The clearest group of finds comes from Schöningen in Germany. The Forschungsmuseum Schöningen reports seven wooden spears, other spear fragments, a lance and two throwing sticks, found in a context containing more than 10,000 wild-horse bones. Other important examples are a broken yew point from Clacton-on-Sea in England and a complete yew spear from Lehringen in Germany. Each contributes different evidence: Schöningen preserves a varied assemblage, Clacton has been examined with modern imaging, and Lehringen offers a complete spear associated with butchered animal remains.

These are often discussed as “Neanderthal tools,” but that label needs qualification. Archaeologists generally attribute these early finds on the basis of their dates and context, not because a maker’s remains were found holding a particular object. The 2024 scholarly review associates Clacton and Schöningen with Homo heidelbergensis and/or Homo neanderthalensis on dating grounds; it also notes wooden spears at Homo sapiens sites. Wooden spear-making was not exclusive to one species.

How the tools were made

Selecting and shaping timber

A wooden spear begins with a choice of suitable timber and a decision about the shape to make. The surviving artifacts and their study support deliberate shaping rather than treating every pointed piece of wood as a finished weapon. The evidence does not, however, preserve a complete record of the makers’ workflow: no single find tells us every step, tool or decision involved in production.

The Clacton object is a fragmentary point made from yew. Because its shaft and much of the original object are missing, researchers cannot reconstruct its full length, balance or exact profile. A University of Reading and Natural History Museum project studied it using standard and three-dimensional microscopy, micro-computed tomography, and 3D scanning. The project reports internal features consistent with particular shaping strategies and says those features indicate knowledge of wood’s material properties. Imaging can reveal how the preserved point was worked; it cannot restore the parts that did not survive.

Making points is not the whole story

Schöningen’s preserved wooden weapons include spruce and pine. A 2024 scholarly review describes at least ten spears, some complete, alongside other wooden weapons. The assemblage’s variety matters: “wooden tool” does not mean one standard design. The finds include pointed weapons and objects interpreted as lances or throwing sticks, but those functional labels vary in certainty and should be tied to the evidence for each artifact.

Some evidence also indicates that manufacture was followed by upkeep. Research on the Schöningen assemblage reports resharpening of a spear tip and discusses on-site maintenance of weapons. This suggests that at least some objects could be repaired or reworked rather than discarded as soon as their edges or points became less useful. A sharpened tip alone does not reveal how often it was renewed or how long the weapon remained in service.

How wooden weapons may have been used

Hunting is supported by context

The strongest case for hunting comes from archaeological associations, not from watching a weapon in use. At Schöningen, wooden weapons occur with abundant horse remains, including butchered bones. At Lehringen, a yew spear was found in association with a butchered straight-tusked elephant. These contexts support interpreting the objects as hunting weapons, while still falling short of documenting a particular hunt or the precise role of a spear in it.

Schöningen spears have been interpreted as both weapons that could be thrown and weapons used for thrusting. Some may have been designed to fly, while others may have been used at close range. The complete Lehringen spear’s form and proposed balance point make throwing less likely, and it is generally interpreted as a thrusting spear. The Clacton point is too incomplete to establish its original balance or delivery method.

Why shape alone cannot settle the question

Dimensions and form can help archaeologists develop hypotheses about how a weapon worked, but they do not reliably prove whether it was thrown or thrust. Milks and colleagues’ 2024 comparison examined 58 ethnographic untipped wooden spears and cautioned against assigning a delivery method from morphology alone. The comparison is a sample of ethnographic objects, not a count of prehistoric weapons; its relevance is methodological, showing why a simple rule based on length or shape can mislead.

For that reason, claims about a specific throw, hunting distance, or successful strike go beyond what these artifacts establish. A spear’s preserved form may be consistent with a proposed use, and animal remains can support a hunting interpretation, but neither evidence records a particular person’s technique. The responsible conclusion is that some wooden weapons may have been thrown and others thrust, with the best-supported interpretation depending on the individual artifact and its context.

Other pointed wood and uncertain tasks

Not every pointed piece from Schöningen has a settled function. The assemblage study reports polish, crushing and micro-splintering on the tips of pointed split woods. These traces may indicate use in slightly abrasive tasks, but do not by themselves identify one specific activity. The study reports no oblique striations of the kind expected for digging sticks. Accordingly, labels such as “digging stick” or “domestic implement” should be treated as hypotheses unless they are supported by evidence specific to an artifact.

What the three major finds show

Find What survives Context and interpretation Main limitation
Schöningen, Germany An assemblage of spruce and pine spears, spear fragments, a lance and throwing sticks. Found with abundant horse bones; both throwing and thrusting interpretations have been proposed. Newer reporting disputes the commonly cited age, and the delivery mode is not certain for every object.
Clacton-on-Sea, England A broken point made of yew. Often interpreted as a spear point; modern imaging investigates its shaping. The missing shaft prevents reconstruction of the full weapon, its balance or its delivery method. Its age attribution is under reassessment.
Lehringen, Germany A complete yew spear. Associated with butchered straight-tusked elephant remains and likely used as a thrusting spear. Its context and morphology support that interpretation but do not directly record the act of use.

The finds are not a simple ranking of technological achievement. Their value lies in the different questions they can answer. Schöningen offers multiple objects and evidence of maintenance; Clacton offers close study of a preserved point’s internal structure and shaping; Lehringen preserves a complete spear whose form can be assessed. None provides every kind of evidence at once.

How old are the Schöningen spears, and were they made by Neanderthals?

The date matters because it affects which hominins could plausibly have made or used the weapons. The Forschungsmuseum Schöningen’s research page gives the assemblage an age of about 300,000 years and frames its makers as Homo heidelbergensis. The museum describes them as “the oldest preserved hunting weapons known to man,” but that wording represents the institution’s stated chronology, not an uncontested resolution of the dating question.

An Associated Press report published May 9, 2025, described a newer estimate of about 200,000 years. If that younger estimate is correct, Neanderthal use becomes plausible. The report also included an outside archaeologist’s caution that the arguments were interesting but not absolutely convincing and that more research was needed. The available evidence does not establish enough detail to decide between the competing age estimates. It is therefore more accurate to say that Neanderthal use is possible under the contested younger dating than to call the Schöningen weapons definitively Neanderthal-made.

The Clacton project describes its working age hypothesis as approximately 400,000 years ago, associated with Marine Isotope Stage 11, while stating that the attribution is under testing. Its project page describes the reassessment as ongoing and says a journal submission was planned for summer 2025. That is a working hypothesis, not a newly confirmed date. As with Schöningen, an age attribution informs the possible maker; the object itself does not identify a species.

The evidence therefore supports a careful distinction: early hominins made wooden weapons, and some finds may have been made or used by Neanderthals, depending on contested dating and attribution. It does not support using “Neanderthal” as a certain label for every early wooden spear. A further caution is that the broad history of wooden spear technology includes sites associated with more than one hominin species.

Why so few wooden tools survive

Wood is vulnerable to decay, so preservation depends on exceptional burial conditions. Schöningen’s sediment conditions preserved objects that would ordinarily disappear. The surviving archaeological record is consequently biased toward rare environments that protect organic material. The number of recovered wooden artifacts cannot be taken as a measure of how often prehistoric people used wood.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This preservation bias also shapes what researchers can compare. Stone artifacts survive in many settings, while a wooden point or shaft can vanish entirely. A site with no preserved wood does not prove its inhabitants lacked wooden tools, and the presence of a few preserved finds does not tell us the full range of objects once made there. The Schöningen assemblage is unusually informative precisely because such survival is uncommon.

What can and cannot be concluded

  • Supported: Pleistocene hominins deliberately shaped wooden objects, including pointed hunting weapons.
  • Supported: Schöningen preserves a varied weapon assemblage, with evidence of maintenance, and occurs in a context containing many horse bones.
  • Supported with qualification: Some artifacts are consistent with hunting, and some Schöningen spears may have been capable of flight; morphology does not establish delivery mode on its own.
  • Unresolved: Whether the commonly discussed Schöningen date of about 300,000 years or a newer estimate around 200,000 years is correct.
  • Not established: The exact hominin maker of each object, the technique used in a particular hunt, and the precise function of every pointed wooden artifact.

The most defensible picture is not of a single “Neanderthal spear” with a fully known maker and use. It is of skilled early toolmakers who worked wood into varied forms, some likely used in hunting, while the surviving objects leave important questions about chronology, species and function open.
