NBA franchise values are commonly estimated by applying a team-specific multiple to estimated revenue, then adjusting for factors such as market, brand, arena arrangements, debt and the league’s outlook. That estimate is not automatically the price for a particular ownership stake: control rights, transaction timing, assets included and NBA approval can all affect what a buyer actually agrees to pay.
How does an NBA team valuation work?
One published approach is a revenue-multiple model. In simplified form, it estimates a team’s revenue and applies a multiple selected for that franchise:
Estimated franchise value ≈ estimated team revenue × team-specific revenue multiple
This is a framework for estimating value, not a universal NBA formula or a guaranteed sale price. Sportico’s 2021 methodology described team-specific multiples informed by historical transactions and several characteristics of each franchise. Its historical examples ranged from 5.75 times revenue for Cleveland to 11.5 times for the Lakers. Those figures describe model inputs in that 2021 methodology; they are not current multiples and should not be applied to a team today as a fixed rule.

The model’s first input, revenue, is itself an estimate. Sportico said it compiled estimates from industry reports, financial records and interviews with people knowledgeable about team and league finances, and presented them to teams for review. Of the 16 teams that responded to inquiries, 10 provided or validated information. Its approach also accounted for league revenue sharing, so the revenue basis is not simply a matter of looking at a team’s locally generated receipts in isolation.
What can move a team’s revenue multiple?
Sportico’s 2021 methodology identifies multiple considerations rather than a single mechanical adjustment. The factors below help explain why two teams with similar estimated revenue might receive different modeled values.
- Market size and saturation: the market’s scale and the degree to which it is already served can influence expectations for the franchise.
- Prospective-owner interest and historical sales: observed transactions and demand from potential buyers inform the multiple, although a past sale does not guarantee what a future buyer will pay.
- Brand strength and on-court history: both long-term and recent performance appear in Sportico’s list of considerations. The methodology does not establish that a season’s results mechanically produce a set change in value.
- Facility lease terms: the economic terms governing use of a venue can matter even where the team does not own the arena outright.
- Debt and future economics: the team’s debt position and expectations about future team and league economics affect the valuation picture.
These are inputs to judgment, not a published lookup table. Sportico’s methodology does not say that each factor has a fixed weight or that an outside reader can calculate a precise current value from the historical multiple range alone.

Which assets are included in a reported franchise value?
A reported team value may reflect more than the basketball operation. Depending on the franchise and the valuation’s scope, related interests can include arena operations, practice facilities, surrounding real estate or regional sports media. Sportico’s methodology described, for example, the Nets’ Barclays Center operating company, the Warriors’ Chase Center and media interests attributed to some teams.
Do not assume that every franchise owns its arena, nearby property or a media network, or that a published figure includes the same bundle of assets for every team. The exact scope varies by franchise. Debt treatment matters too: a headline franchise or enterprise value and the equity value attributable to owners are not necessarily interchangeable measures. If the source does not explain what businesses, assets and liabilities it includes, the figure cannot safely be treated as a like-for-like measure of what owners would receive in a sale.
Why can a stake sell for a different amount than a published valuation?
A published valuation is a reference estimate for a franchise under a particular methodology and at a particular time. The price for an ownership interest is set by a transaction agreement. A control buyer receives decision-making authority; a minority investor may receive economic participation without equivalent control. The percentage, rights, timing and other terms therefore matter alongside the headline value.

A simple percentage calculation can be a useful first comparison, but it is not a reliable prediction of a deal price. Multiplying a published valuation by, say, the percentage being sold assumes that the estimate and the transaction refer to the same assets and liabilities, and that the stake’s rights and timing are properly reflected. Those assumptions may not hold. The available transaction examples do not establish a standard discount or premium for minority stakes, so one should not apply a universal adjustment.
Staged transfers add another distinction: the amount paid for an initial interest, the value used for a later transfer, and a possible total value over the entire arrangement can be different figures. A transaction announcement may describe a valuation while leaving private contractual terms undisclosed.
What recent reported NBA transaction figures show
The following figures come from different sources and describe different types of evidence. They should not be read as a ranked, audited set of comparable equity prices.

Houlihan Lokey’s Fall 2025 report draws on Forbes, Sportico, PitchBook, S&P Capital IQ, public filings and other public information. Its transaction figures are reported estimates, not audited prices or proof that each deal represents an identical share of team equity on identical terms. The NBA’s Celtics announcement, meanwhile, describes a staged transaction: its initial valuation and possible later total are not interchangeable with a single completed cash sale at one price.
The Trail Blazers announcement illustrates a separate limit on what a public approval notice can establish. It confirms approval of a controlling-interest sale and identifies the group’s leader and incoming governor, but does not state a transaction valuation. The absence of a number in that announcement is not a basis for inferring one.

How to compare two published valuations or deals
Before concluding that one team is “worth more” than another—or that a reported deal proves a ranking—check whether the figures measure the same thing. Use this comparison checklist:

- Date and source: record when the estimate or transaction was reported and who reported it. Values from different years may reflect different market and league expectations.
- Estimate versus transaction: distinguish a modeled valuation or press-reported estimate from an agreed transaction figure or a league-approved sale.
- Control and percentage: establish whether the buyer acquired control or a minority interest, what percentage was involved and whether control changes later.
- Rights and timing: look for disclosed decision-making rights and staged-transfer terms. If those details are not public, mark the comparison as incomplete rather than assuming them.
- Assets and related businesses: check whether the figure includes arena interests, property, practice facilities or media businesses, and whether those interests are comparable.
- Debt and value basis: determine how debt is treated and whether the figure is a franchise or enterprise measure, an equity value, or another stated measure.
The public examples above do not provide enough detail to normalize every transaction to a common equity-value basis. A comparison can therefore be useful as context without being precise enough to calculate a universal price per percentage point of ownership.
How NBA approval and investor eligibility affect ownership transfers
NBA governance is part of a team ownership transfer, not a detail a buyer can ignore. The league’s announcements of approval for the Celtics transaction in 2025 and the Trail Blazers controlling-interest sale in 2026 show the Board of Governors process in practice. Approval establishes that the league approved the announced transaction; it does not, by itself, disclose every private term or establish a comparable valuation.
Investor eligibility can also constrain who may hold an interest and how large that interest may be. A Standard Chartered report from April 2025 summarized then-current NBA private-equity limits as up to 30% aggregate fund ownership in a team; an individual fund holding from 0.5% to 20%, with its maximum not exceeding the control owner’s stake; and a five-year minimum holding period. The report also said the NBA has flexibility to grant exceptions. These are figures in a dated secondary summary, not a substitute for checking the league’s current rules and the documents for a specific transaction.

A headline number can tell you how a source or transaction announcement valued a team in a particular context. It does not automatically tell you the price for every stake, the proceeds an owner would receive after considering debt and included assets, or what another franchise would sell for. To interpret it responsibly, keep the valuation method, date, scope and transaction rights attached to the number.
For a modeled figure, identify the revenue estimate and multiple framework, then ask what assets and liabilities the valuation includes. For a transaction figure, identify the percentage and control rights being transferred, whether the deal is staged, and what the source actually confirms. When an announcement leaves those details open, the accurate conclusion is that they are not established by the public figure—not that a familiar valuation formula fills in the blanks.
