NASA’s Artemis III lunar suit, the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU), is designed as a wearable life-support system: a pressure garment and backpack support system intended to keep astronauts alive while they move, work and collect samples on the Moon. Its design must balance protection from pressure loss, lunar dust and extreme cold with enough mobility and fit for useful surface work. Axiom Space is developing the suit under NASA requirements; the design goals and test milestones are not the same as completed flight certification.
Why a Moonwalk needs a life-support system
The Moon has no breathable atmosphere. An astronaut working outside a spacecraft therefore needs more than clothing: the suit must provide a protected environment while the wearer walks, bends, handles tools and collects geology samples. NASA describes the pressure garment and Portable Life Support System (PLSS) as the core body and backpack systems of a spacesuit. Its Artemis overview describes the next-generation suits as pairing a pressure garment system with an upgraded PLSS.
That system-level distinction matters. AxEMU is not simply a tougher fabric shell, nor is the backpack a separate convenience accessory. The garment and support system together are intended to make work outside the spacecraft possible. NASA’s general spacesuit descriptions explain the broad roles of those systems, but they should not be mistaken for a complete, component-by-component specification of AxEMU.

The challenge is to make protection compatible with the work. A suit that keeps its wearer safe but makes it difficult to reach the ground or handle samples would constrain what astronauts can accomplish. Conversely, mobility has to be designed within the safety and life-support requirements NASA sets for the mission.

How the design addresses the Moon’s main hazards
Maintaining a protected environment
The pressure garment is a central part of the suit because the lunar surface does not provide breathable air. NASA’s materials describe pressure garments as part of the core spacesuit system, but the available AxEMU descriptions do not provide a detailed breakdown of its layers, internal operating parameters or individual life-support components. It is more accurate to explain the suit’s purpose at system level than to assign unverified specifications to particular parts.
The PLSS is the backpack portion of that system. NASA describes it as a core element that supports an astronaut outside a spacecraft, and its Artemis overview calls for an upgraded PLSS in the next-generation suit. “Upgraded” signals a design direction; it does not, by itself, establish exactly which functions have changed or how they perform on the Moon.
Keeping lunar dust from becoming a suit problem
NASA technical material identifies lunar dust exposure as a design concern and discusses development of a dust-resistant outer garment. The outer protection is important because surface work brings the suit into contact with the lunar environment. Dust protection is therefore a matter of preserving the suit’s ability to support mission work, not simply keeping the garment looking clean.

It supports the narrower conclusion that dust resistance is a design need being addressed. The specific materials, construction details and verified performance limits should not be inferred from that general description.

Protecting against cold, especially in permanently shadowed regions
Thermal protection is another design challenge. NASA’s technical report discusses boot insulation for contact with extremely cold ground in permanently shadowed regions near the lunar South Pole. The boot is a distinct engineering concern because astronauts need to work on the surface, where contact with very cold terrain can matter.
The report describes a test condition of 48 kelvins (48 K) simulating a permanently shadowed lunar South Pole region. That number belongs to the reported test condition; it is not a universal temperature for the Moon or a claim that all Artemis surface operations occur at 48 K. The cited material establishes that cold-ground boot performance is being considered, not a full thermal rating for the complete suit.
Mobility is part of protection and mission capability
NASA says AxEMU is intended to let astronauts bend to collect geology samples and perform other surface tasks. That goal makes movement a mission requirement: a crew member needs to reach work areas, position their body and use tools without the suit unduly restricting the task. The relevant design concerns include fit, torso and lower-body movement, and flexible joints.

The distinction is important: a stated capability describes what engineers are designing toward, while performance in a lunar mission would require the system to complete qualification, certification and actual mission use.

NASA has also used underwater simulation to exercise lunar tasks in a controlled analog setting. NASA’s 2025 milestones page reported the first dual underwater suit run in September 2025. Such a simulation can help teams rehearse movement and work while wearing suits, but an underwater analog is not the lunar surface: it does not establish how the suit performs in lunar dust, vacuum or the cited cold-ground conditions.
Fit is a design target, not a reported outcome
NASA says AxEMU is designed to accommodate at least 90 percent of the U.S. male and female population. This is a stated sizing target, not an independently reported fit-study result in the cited NASA material. It signals an effort to make the suit usable by a broader range of crew members, while leaving the precise fit outcomes and individual sizing process unestablished by that figure alone.
Fit matters because a spacesuit is worn while performing physical tasks. The design concerns described by NASA and the NASA Office of Inspector General include torso and lower-body movement and flexible joints. Adjustability and fit therefore connect directly to whether a crewmember can bend and work as intended, rather than being merely matters of comfort or appearance.
Who designs the Artemis suit and who sets the rules
Axiom Space is responsible for designing, developing, qualifying, certifying and producing AxEMU and its associated support equipment. NASA selected Axiom for the Artemis III moonwalking system and sets the technical and safety requirements. NASA also retains authority over astronaut training, mission planning and approval of the service systems.

The work builds on NASA’s Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU) prototype effort. That heritage provides a development basis, but it does not mean the AxEMU is identical to a prototype or that the prototype’s status automatically carries over to the flight suit. Axiom owns the design-and-delivery work; NASA’s requirements and approval roles remain part of how the system is developed for a mission.
NASA announced a $228.5 million base value for Axiom’s initial task order in 2022. That is a historical base value for the initial task order, not the full lifetime cost of the program and not a retail price for a suit.

NASA’s Johnson 2025 milestones page reported more than 700 hours of manned, pressurized testing completed to that point. This is a development-testing milestone, not a declaration that the suit has completed flight certification. The same NASA page reported the first dual underwater suit run in September 2025, an analog exercise rather than a lunar mission.

NASA’s next steps were to evaluate readiness and conduct an agency-led design review, described in that update as a critical design sync review. Completing the contractor review did not mean NASA had finished its own evaluation.

NASA’s Office of Inspector General, in an April 2026 acquisition review, flagged schedule and readiness challenges. It also reported that Collins Aerospace task orders had been removed in 2024, leaving Axiom as the only active provider in the xEVAS effort reviewed. Those are dated oversight findings, not a complete statement of the program’s status at every later date.
Together, the public milestones show substantial testing and ongoing review, but they do not establish final flight readiness or completed certification. Engineering reviews and test hours answer different questions: they document development activity and evaluation steps, while certification is a separate status that the cited updates do not report as complete.
How to read claims about Artemis suit capabilities
When evaluating a claim about AxEMU, identify whether it describes a requirement, a design target, a test or a verified outcome. That distinction keeps NASA’s stated goals from being mistaken for proven mission performance.

NASA’s descriptions support discussion of the pressure garment, PLSS, dust-resistant outer garment development, cold-region boot insulation, mobility goals and fit target. They do not support a detailed inventory of AxEMU components, exact performance limits for every hazard or an assertion that the suit has already proven itself on the Moon.
