NASA does not begin by launching a nuclear reactor. It first exercises the hardware in nonnuclear system tests, then runs a controlled nuclear demonstration that reproduces the power system’s expected operating sequence. The clearest example is KRUSTY (Kilopower Reactor Using Stirling TechnologY), a NASA and Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration ground experiment completed at the Nevada National Security Site on March 21, 2018.
KRUSTY showed that a small fission power system could start, produce heat, convert that heat to electricity, and respond to changing loads in a space-simulated test environment. It was a successful technology demonstration—not flight qualification, launch approval, or proof that every future space reactor will be safe.
Why test a space reactor on Earth?
A space reactor must operate far from repair crews, grid power and conventional cooling infrastructure. Engineers therefore need evidence about the complete power chain before considering a flight mission. That chain includes the reactor core, heat transport, power conversion, controls and the way the system responds when electrical demand changes.

Ground testing cannot reproduce every feature of a spacecraft or planetary surface. It can, however, expose hardware to controlled startup, power changes, steady operation and shutdown while engineers measure temperatures, neutron behavior, electrical output and system stability. Testing on Earth also allows a government laboratory and its partners to use substantial instrumentation, containment and emergency procedures.

KRUSTY was designed as a small fission power system for possible space applications. Its demonstration answered a technology question: could a compact reactor and its power-conversion equipment behave as an integrated system under representative operating scenarios?
KRUSTY’s hardware in plain terms
The tested system used a solid uranium-235 reactor core to generate heat. Sodium heat pipes transported that heat away from the core without a mechanical pump. At the power-conversion end, Stirling engines turned the heat into electricity.
This architecture matters because each element has a different job. Fission in the core supplies heat; the sodium heat pipes move it; the Stirling engines convert it to electrical power. The test therefore had to examine more than whether a reactor could reach a temperature. It had to show that the components interacted predictably and that the reactor remained controlled while the electrical load changed.
Stage one: a nonnuclear system test at Glenn Research Center
Replacing fission with electrical heat
NASA first tested the system at Glenn Research Center using electrical heaters rather than a critical reactor. The setup also used a depleted-uranium core simulator. Because the simulator did not sustain fission, engineers could exercise the system-level hardware without conducting a nuclear operation.
Electrical heating allowed the team to check heat-transfer paths, instrumentation, control logic and the interaction between the heat pipes and Stirling engines. It was especially useful for finding integration problems before the more tightly controlled nuclear experiment. A fault in wiring, sensors or a power-conversion component could be investigated without introducing reactor neutronics into the test.

What this stage could and could not show
- It could show: whether components fit and operated together, whether heat moved through the intended paths, whether controls responded to commands and whether the Stirling engines produced electricity from supplied heat.
- It could not show: how an actual uranium-235 core behaved during startup, how neutron multiplication changed with temperature, or how the reactor responded to nuclear transients.
That distinction is central to NASA’s staged approach. A nonnuclear test reduces technical uncertainty while deliberately leaving the fission-specific questions for a later test.
Stage two: the nuclear demonstration in Nevada
Where and when it happened
The nuclear demonstration took place at the Device Assembly Facility at the Nevada National Security Site. NASA and its partners completed the nuclear ground test on March 21, 2018. The technical summary describes a full-scale system using flight-prototypic materials and components, operated in a space-simulated environment.
The four-part sequence
NASA’s public account describes the demonstration as a progression from basic checks to a simulated mission:
- Nonpowered component checks: The team verified hardware and instrumentation before applying reactor power.
- Incremental core heating: Heat was raised in controlled steps so engineers could observe temperatures, heat-pipe behavior and the developing reactor response.
- Powered operation and dynamic testing: The system was operated at power while engineers changed conditions and examined whether it remained stable.
- Final full-power phase: The culminating run simulated startup, ramp-up, steady operation and shutdown over 28 hours.
The 28-hour figure is the duration of that final simulated-mission test. It is not a reactor-lifetime claim, a reliability percentage or a prediction of how long a flight unit could operate.
What engineers looked for during nuclear operation
Startup and ramp-up
Startup is a sensitive period because the reactor transitions from a cold, nonpowered state to one in which fission heat, sodium heat transport and electrical generation interact. Engineers watched the rise in reactor power and temperature, checked that the control system followed the intended sequence and confirmed that the power-conversion equipment came online as expected.

Steady-state behavior
At steady operation, the test team looked for a stable balance among fission heat, heat-pipe transport, Stirling-engine output and heat rejection. Temperature control was particularly important. The technical results support the conclusion that the demonstrator maintained passive temperature control under the tested conditions.

A space power system will not always see a constant electrical demand. Instruments, communications equipment, propulsion auxiliaries or habitat systems can switch on and off. KRUSTY therefore included dynamic changes intended to test whether the reactor could respond to changing power-conversion loads without losing control.
The nuclear test examined reactor neutronics during startup, steady-state operation and transient events. That is the information an electrical-heater test cannot provide: how the fission reaction and the thermal system behave together when operating conditions move away from a fixed point.
How the two test stages differ
| Test stage | Fission involved? | Primary behavior exercised | Neutronics examined? | Mission realism |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Glenn Research Center system test | No; electrical heaters supplied the heat | Component integration, heat transport, controls and Stirling power conversion | No | System-level operation without nuclear hazards |
| Nevada nuclear demonstration | Yes; a solid uranium-235 core produced heat | Integrated reactor response, heat-pipe transport, electrical generation and dynamic stability | Yes | Controlled, space-simulated operating scenarios using full-scale, flight-prototypic hardware |
The stages are complementary rather than interchangeable. The first removes integration risk before fission is introduced. The second addresses the behavior that only a nuclear core can produce.
What KRUSTY demonstrated
NASA reported that KRUSTY performed as expected under normal and off-normal conditions included in the demonstration. The technical summary says the dynamic tests supported passive temperature control and system stability. In practical terms, the tested system continued to behave predictably while the team changed operating conditions and power-conversion loads.

NASA attributed the following assessment to David Poston, identified in the release as chief reactor designer at Los Alamos National Laboratory: “We threw everything we could at this reactor, in terms of nominal and off-normal operating scenarios and KRUSTY passed with flying colors.”
Those findings apply to the KRUSTY demonstrator and the scenarios actually run. They provide evidence that the design concepts and tested hardware worked together on the ground. They do not establish a universal safety guarantee, a flight-ready production design or a lifetime reliability statistic.

Technology demonstration
A technology demonstration answers whether a proposed system can perform its intended functions in a controlled experiment. KRUSTY reached that milestone: NASA and its partners operated a nuclear ground system through a simulated mission sequence and observed the expected behavior.
Flight qualification
Flight qualification is a broader engineering and program process. It normally requires evidence that a specific flight unit, manufacturing process and mission configuration can withstand launch loads, vibration, shock, thermal environments, radiation exposure, electromagnetic conditions, long-duration operation and other requirements. The KRUSTY ground demonstration did not by itself complete those activities.

Launch approval
Launching a nuclear system adds a separate safety and authorization process. NASA’s safety presentation describes compliance with federal and Department of Energy requirements for the experiment and identifies additional environmental and interagency reviews for a potential flight mission. Launch and operational hazards would need to be analyzed before a decision to proceed.

Therefore, “KRUSTY passed its ground test” is accurate. “NASA approved a flight reactor” is not supported by the demonstration. A future mission would require its own reactor design, spacecraft integration, safety analysis and authorization decisions.
How NASA’s staged method reduces risk
- Separate integration risk from nuclear risk. Electrical heating lets engineers debug the power system before introducing fission.
- Increase power gradually. Incremental core heating provides measurements at intermediate conditions instead of jumping immediately to full power.
- Use representative hardware. Full-scale and flight-prototypic components make the results more relevant than a small laboratory mock-up.
- Exercise both normal and off-normal behavior. Dynamic load changes reveal whether passive feedback and controls keep temperatures within acceptable limits.
- Run a complete operating sequence. Startup, ramp-up, steady operation and shutdown test the transitions a mission would require, not just a single operating point.
- Keep safety reviews distinct. Demonstrating hardware performance does not replace environmental, interagency or launch-hazard analyses.
What the 28-hour result means—and what it does not
The 28-hour full-power run shows that the demonstrator completed a simulated sequence lasting 28 hours. It gives readers a concrete measure of the culminating test’s duration and scope.
It does not mean the reactor was designed for only 28 hours, nor does it establish a 28-hour reliability rate. The available NASA material does not provide a broader statistical reliability figure or a comparable numeric safety rate for KRUSTY. Extending the test duration into a prediction about a future mission would go beyond the evidence.
A practical way to read claims about space-reactor tests
- Ask whether the test used electrical heat or an operating nuclear core.
- Check whether the claim concerns a component, an integrated system or a specific flight unit.
- Look for the operating scenarios: startup, steady state, transients and shutdown provide different evidence.
- Separate “performed as expected” from “certified,” “flight-qualified” or “approved for launch.”
- Check the duration’s qualification. A test length is not automatically a lifetime or reliability measurement.
- Identify the location and date, because a ground demonstration at a national test facility is not the same as an in-space experiment.
Why KRUSTY remains important
Spacecraft that travel far from the Sun, operate through long lunar nights or support high-power surface systems may need dependable power that solar arrays cannot always provide. A compact fission system could supply heat and electricity continuously, but only if its reactor, heat transport and conversion equipment remain stable without constant human intervention.
KRUSTY provided a controlled, ground-based demonstration of that integrated approach. Its value lies in the sequence: nonnuclear system testing first, nuclear operation later, and a clear separation between proving a technology and authorizing a flight mission. That is how NASA can learn about a space reactor on Earth before accepting the additional risks of launch.
