NASA spacecraft return astronauts by controlling the path and orientation of the crew capsule, protecting it from reentry heat, slowing it with the atmosphere and a vehicle-specific landing system, and recovering the crew after touchdown. The sequence differs by spacecraft: Orion is designed for a Pacific splashdown after a deep-space return, Crew Dragon returns from the International Space Station to an ocean landing, and NASA reported a parachute-assisted Soyuz landing on land in Kazakhstan in July 2026. No single landing sequence applies to every vehicle.
What makes a return safe?
A return is not just a matter of pointing a capsule at Earth and opening parachutes. The crew module must arrive at a planned place and time, remain oriented as designed, withstand intense heating, slow down enough for its landing system, and reach a recovery area teams can manage. Astronaut protection continues through the period after landing, too.
These systems work together. A heat shield addresses heating; it does not by itself guide the capsule or bring it to a safe stop. Guidance and attitude control, parachutes or other landing equipment, crew survival provisions, and recovery operations all have distinct jobs. NASA’s public sources do not provide comparable safety-probability figures for Orion, Dragon, Starliner, and Soyuz, so they do not support ranking the vehicles by a numerical risk estimate.
How the return sequence works
1. Plan a return opportunity
A spacecraft has to leave its orbit or trajectory on a path that meets Earth’s atmosphere at a planned location and time. For a station return, a suitable landing area is also a recovery decision: weather, the time between undocking and landing, daylight where possible, and the availability of recovery teams can affect which opportunity is usable.

For Dragon, NASA describes teams reviewing departure opportunities and possible splashdown sites, then making go/no-go checks before boarding, during free flight, and before the deorbit burn. A plan can change when weather criteria are not met. These operational details describe Dragon’s return process; they should not be treated as a single flight plan for all spacecraft. The available NASA descriptions do not give an equivalent, step-by-step deorbit plan for Orion, Soyuz, and Starliner.
2. Control the capsule’s orientation
As a spacecraft separates from other hardware and approaches the atmosphere, its crew module must hold the orientation its design calls for. Orion’s crew module has 12 reaction-control-system thrusters. NASA says they control translation and rotation after separation from the service module, orient the heat shield downward, and stabilize the module during descent.
That orientation is important because Orion’s heat shield is on the bottom of the crew module. The thrusters’ role is specific to Orion’s design; NASA’s material does not establish that other vehicles use the same thrusters or control arrangement. The broader point is that a return capsule needs controlled attitude, not merely a trajectory toward Earth.

3. Manage the heat of reentry
Orion illustrates the scale of the heating challenge for a deep-space return. NASA’s undated Crew Module reference gives an approximate return speed of 25,000 miles per hour and says Orion’s heat shield faces temperatures near 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit (2,760 degrees Celsius). Those figures apply to Orion, not to every spacecraft returning from orbit.
Orion’s heat shield is 16.5 feet in diameter. NASA describes its outer surface as 186 uniquely shaped Avcoat billets, made from a reformulated ablative material. During reentry, the Avcoat ablates: the material is consumed in a controlled way that carries heat away from the crew module. Tiles on the backshell protect the sides. Together, the shield and backshell protection help keep the crew module’s interior from experiencing the full external heating.
“Ablative” does not mean the shield is intended to remain unchanged. Its controlled wear is part of how it manages heat. Nor does the Orion example establish the shield material or dimensions used by Dragon, Starliner, or Soyuz. The design and conditions are vehicle-specific.

4. Use the atmosphere and landing system to slow down
Earth’s atmosphere provides substantial deceleration before the parachutes finish the job. NASA says atmospheric drag slows Orion from about 25,000 miles per hour to around 325 miles per hour. At approximately 23,000 feet, Orion jettisons its forward bay cover, which protects the parachutes during reentry. Its 11-parachute system then deploys in sequence, reducing descent speed to about 20 miles per hour or less for a Pacific splashdown.

The parachutes do not replace the heat shield or control system: they deploy much later, after the capsule has passed through the high-heating portion of the return and the atmosphere has already reduced its speed. NASA’s Crew Module description identifies three main parachutes as the final part of the sequence that slows the crew module for landing.
Other spacecraft use landing systems suited to their designs. NASA describes Dragon as using parachutes before its planned water landing. NASA’s Commercial Crew press kit describes Starliner’s parachute sequence and airbags for a ground landing. These descriptions are not interchangeable: the place a capsule is designed to land determines what must be ready around it. A press-kit design overview, by itself, is not confirmation of a spacecraft’s current crewed-flight status.

5. Land in the vehicle’s intended environment
Orion and Crew Dragon are described by NASA as ocean-splashdown spacecraft, while the cited Starliner press-kit overview describes a ground landing. NASA’s July 26, 2026, report documents Soyuz MS-28 landing by parachute near Zhezkazgan, Kazakhstan. That mission report establishes the landing location and method reported for that flight, but it is not a full technical explanation of Soyuz’s landing system.
| Vehicle | Mission context in NASA material | Landing environment described | Deceleration details available |
|---|---|---|---|
| Orion | Deep-space crew module design | Pacific Ocean splashdown | Atmospheric slowing; 11 parachutes, including three main parachutes in the terminal sequence |
| Crew Dragon | NASA Commercial Crew station missions | Ocean splashdown | Parachute-assisted landing; NASA describes the recovery operation, but the cited source does not provide a comparable speed-by-speed sequence |
| Starliner | Design overview in NASA’s Commercial Crew press kit | Ground landing | Parachutes and airbags, as described in the press kit; current crewed-flight status is not established by that description |
| Soyuz MS-28 | NASA report on a specific mission, July 26, 2026 | Land landing near Zhezkazgan, Kazakhstan | NASA reported a parachute-assisted landing; a fuller technical sequence is not stated in that mission report |
What happens after splashdown?
Dragon: clear the area, inspect, and hoist
For Dragon, landing is followed by a coordinated maritime recovery. NASA says teams work with government partners to establish a 10-nautical-mile safety zone, coordinating with the FAA and U.S. Coast Guard. Notices and patrol boats help keep the area clear of other traffic.

This sequence makes hazard assessment part of the recovery, rather than assuming that a capsule is safe to approach simply because it has landed.

Orion: a dedicated recovery team
NASA assigns Orion capsule and crew recovery to the Landing and Recovery Team, led by the Exploration Ground Systems Program at Kennedy Space Center. Artemis I demonstrated recovery procedures with an uncrewed Orion capsule. It was an uncrewed test, not a return of astronauts, and should not be described as a crewed Orion landing.
Prepare for the wait before help arrives
NASA says Orion crews have survival gear for the possibility that they may need to exit into the ocean before recovery personnel arrive. This is a contingency provision, not an indication that crews routinely leave the capsule in the water. It addresses the gap between landing and recovery: the crew may need protection even after the flight itself is over.
How do astronauts get back from the Moon or a space station?
The basic sequence—planned return, controlled orientation, atmospheric deceleration, a landing system, and recovery—can help explain both kinds of trip, but the conditions and hardware are not identical. NASA’s Orion descriptions concern a deep-space crew module design, including its high-energy return figures and Pacific landing design. Crew Dragon’s operational example is a station return with site selection and maritime recovery procedures.

The distinction matters when applying a number or procedure. Orion’s approximate 25,000-mph return speed and 5,000°F heat-shield temperature are Orion-specific values; they are not a general description of every station return. Similarly, Dragon’s weather reviews and 10-nautical-mile recovery zone are details of its described operation, not a universal rule for all spacecraft.
What NASA’s Soyuz mission report does—and does not—show
NASA reported that Soyuz MS-28 landed by parachute near Zhezkazgan, Kazakhstan, on July 26, 2026. The crew comprised NASA astronaut Chris Williams and Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikaev. NASA said the crew had spent 241 days in space, completed 3,856 Earth orbits, and traveled more than 102 million miles. These figures describe that mission’s duration and travel, not its safety probability or a comparative risk level.
A mission landing report is useful evidence of what happened on that flight, but it is not equivalent to an engineering overview of every stage of Soyuz reentry. The report supports saying that this crew returned by parachute-assisted land landing in Kazakhstan; it does not support filling in technical details that it does not provide.
Quick Recap
Key limits when comparing return systems
- Keep design and demonstrated missions separate. NASA’s Orion recovery description includes the uncrewed Artemis I recovery; it does not establish that Artemis I carried astronauts.
- Keep reported missions separate from general design descriptions. The Soyuz landing details above apply to the July 2026 MS-28 mission report. The Starliner landing method comes from a press-kit design overview.
- Keep each number with its vehicle and context. Orion’s speed, temperature, shield dimensions, billet count, altitude, and descent speeds are not universal spacecraft specifications.
- Do not infer a safety ranking. The cited NASA material supplies no comparable accident-rate or probability figures for these vehicles.
