NASA does not simply open a hatch when a spacecraft hits the ocean. Recovery starts with a hazard survey, capsule-stability checks and, for Crew Dragon, tests for toxic hypergolic-propellant vapors. Teams then either hoist the spacecraft onto a recovery ship or guide it into an amphibious ship’s well deck. Astronauts receive medical checks aboard ship; depending on the vehicle, they may leave the capsule before it is recovered or remain inside while the capsule is lifted.
The exact sequence depends on the spacecraft, sea state, weather, daylight, recovery site and mission plan. Crew Dragon and Orion use notably different hardware and choreography.
What happens immediately after splashdown
A splashdown ends the high-speed flight, but it begins a tightly scripted maritime operation. Recovery ships and small boats are positioned before re-entry, with personnel, divers, physicians, helicopters, winches and specialized fixtures ready for the expected landing area. Mission planners select return opportunities and sites by weighing weather, sea conditions, recovery readiness, the time required to return from orbit, and available daylight.

The first people near a capsule are not usually the astronauts’ medical attendants. They are recovery specialists whose first job is to determine whether the spacecraft and water around it are safe. They look for structural damage, unstable motion, leaking fluids, fire or other hazards. Crew Dragon teams specifically check the surrounding air and water for hypergolic-propellant vapors before committing personnel to the capsule.

Once the spacecraft is stable, recovery personnel secure it against movement, prepare the hatch or lifting points, and establish a safe route for the crew. The astronauts’ path and the capsule’s path can then diverge. A crew may be flown by helicopter to the recovery ship while the capsule is towed or hoisted separately.
How Crew Dragon recovery works
NASA and SpaceX plan Crew Dragon recovery as a joint operation involving recovery-ship crews, fast boats, medical personnel, NASA specialists and other government partners. The following sequence reflects NASA’s published descriptions of normal returns; an actual mission can be changed by weather, spacecraft condition or sea state.
1. Two fast boats inspect the landing area
After Dragon splashes down, two fast boats deploy from the recovery vessel. One boat approaches to assess Dragon’s integrity and the surrounding water. Its crew checks for hazards, including possible hypergolic-propellant vapors, before other personnel prepare the spacecraft. The second boat deals with the parachutes that detached during descent, securing and recovering them so they do not become hazards to vessels or people.

3. Dragon is hoisted onto the main deck
A shipboard crane hoists Dragon from the water onto the recovery vessel’s main deck. NASA’s descriptions place this lift before hatch opening in the normal procedure. Keeping the capsule on a stable deck gives medical and recovery personnel a controlled platform instead of asking them to work around a moving spacecraft in open water.
4. The hatch is opened and doctors begin checks
Once Dragon is secured in a stable position, recovery personnel open the hatch. Medical professionals perform initial assessments, looking for problems associated with re-entry, dehydration, motion, impact loads and the long period spent in microgravity. The astronauts can then be moved into the ship’s care and prepared for transport to shore.
How long does Crew Dragon recovery take?
A NASA overview published in 2021 estimated roughly 45 to 60 minutes from splashdown through capsule hoisting, hatch opening and initial checks, depending on the spacecraft and sea conditions. A later NASA return-operations reference summarizes the process as approximately one hour. These are mission-era planning estimates for a particular sequence, not a universal guarantee for every Dragon landing; rough water, darkness, a difficult approach or a technical inspection can extend the clock.
How Orion recovery works
Orion uses a different recovery concept because it is designed for Artemis missions returning from the Moon. NASA’s Exploration Ground Systems Program leads the operation with a joint landing and recovery team that includes Navy personnel, NASA specialists, divers, medical staff and Department of Defense partners. An amphibious Navy ship supplies a flooded well deck for the spacecraft and aviation facilities for the crew.

1. Divers assess Orion and establish a safe perimeter
After Orion lands, Navy divers enter the water to inspect the capsule and the conditions around it. They assess its position, attach equipment and help ensure that waves, currents, damaged hardware or other hazards will not endanger the recovery team. Orion recovery is designed around a ship that can bring the capsule into its internal well deck, so divers work in the water while the ship is positioned for the next phase.
2. An inflatable collar stabilizes the capsule
Teams place an inflatable collar around Orion. The collar increases stability and provides a controlled interface for the recovery equipment. Stabilizing the spacecraft is essential before anyone opens the side hatch or transfers weight between the capsule and a raft.
3. The “front porch” raft supports crew egress
Divers position an inflatable raft known as the “front porch” beneath Orion’s side hatch. The raft acts as a temporary platform at the waterline. Astronauts can move from the hatch onto this platform instead of climbing directly into a small boat or trying to step into the sea.
4. Astronauts leave Orion and fly to the ship
After the raft is in place and the capsule is stable, recovery personnel assist the crew out through the side hatch. The raft is then moved away from Orion. Two helicopters lift the astronauts from the recovery area to the amphibious ship, where they are taken to a medical bay for examinations and post-flight care.

5. The capsule follows a separate route into the well deck
Orion remains in the water after the astronauts depart. Divers attach lines to the capsule, and ship personnel use winches to guide it toward the open well deck. The deck is flooded so the spacecraft can be pulled inside; once Orion is over its stand, the ship can be dewatered and the capsule secured for transport.
How fast are Orion astronauts recovered?
For Artemis II, NASA published a goal of delivering the astronauts to the recovery ship’s medical bay within two hours of splashdown. NASA also noted that nighttime operations may take longer while still being planned to meet that requirement. The two-hour target measures crew delivery to medical care, not the time required to secure Orion aboard the ship.
Why the crew and capsule use different recovery paths
The separation is a safety and logistics decision. Astronauts need rapid access to medical personnel, a controlled environment and transportation away from the ocean. The spacecraft is heavy, structurally sensitive and not itself a patient. It can be stabilized, connected to lines and moved at a slower pace while the crew receives care.

The crew leaves on the front porch, travels by helicopter and reaches the ship’s medical bay, while divers and winches later move the uncrewed capsule into the well deck. What the timing figures actually mean
“Recovery time” is not one universal measurement. A report may be timing the first boat’s approach, the hatch opening, the crew’s arrival in a medical bay or the capsule’s final placement aboard the ship. Comparing numbers without identifying the endpoint can make two successful operations look inconsistent.
- Crew Dragon’s 45–60 minutes: NASA’s 2021 estimate covers splashdown through hoisting, hatch opening and initial medical checks, subject to spacecraft and sea conditions.
- Orion’s two-hour goal: NASA’s Artemis II requirement concerns delivery of the astronauts to the recovery ship’s medical bay, not Orion’s placement in the well deck.
- Artemis I’s five-hour figure: On the uncrewed Artemis I test, Orion was secured inside USS Portland’s well deck about five hours after splashdown on December 11, 2022. That historical capsule-recovery time is not the Artemis II crew-retrieval target.
Recent mission examples
Artemis II
NASA’s 2026 Artemis II mission recap describes the planned recovery elements being used in the completed mission: teams secured Orion, opened the hatch, assisted the astronauts out, flew the crew by helicopter to the Navy ship and brought Orion aboard for transport to shore. The mission demonstrates why crew retrieval and spacecraft recovery are reported as separate but coordinated work streams.
Crew-12
NASA reported that Crew-12 Dragon splashed down off Los Angeles at 11:34 a.m. EDT on October 8, 2026. In the initial post-splashdown update, teams aboard the recovery ship, including two fast boats, were securing Dragon and confirming that it was safe. The recovery vessel then moved in to hoist Dragon to the main deck with the crew still inside. That update documents the early recovery stage; it does not by itself establish the complete later medical handoff or total recovery duration.

Who makes the operation work
Recovery is an engineered system rather than a single rescue crew. Open-water leadership covers design, certification, procurement and training for NASA and Navy teams, as well as the hardware and procedures needed to bring astronauts and spacecraft aboard an amphibious ship. Other specialists operate the fast boats, cranes, winches, divers’ equipment, helicopters, communications systems and medical facilities.
Training covers both routine and abnormal cases: a capsule that drifts outside the preferred area, rougher-than-planned seas, limited visibility, a damaged hatch, a delayed helicopter or a spacecraft that must remain closed while engineers investigate a hazard. Site selection and return planning reduce those risks by providing alternate opportunities and by favoring daylight when practical.
Safety checks and possible delays
- Propellant or chemical hazards: Crew Dragon teams verify that vapors are not present before approaching or opening the spacecraft.
- Capsule motion: Waves and currents can make a hatch, raft or lifting operation unsafe, so teams may wait for stabilization.
- Night operations: Darkness can slow visual inspections, helicopter work and diver operations. NASA specifically expects Artemis II night recovery to take longer while remaining within its crew-delivery requirement.
- Weather and sea state: Wind, swell, lightning and visibility influence the landing site, ship approach and aviation plan.
- Spacecraft condition: A damaged vehicle may require additional inspection before personnel enter or before a crane lift is attempted.
These delays are not failures of the basic plan. The plan is deliberately staged so that no team has to trade a safety check for speed.
The key idea
NASA retrieves astronauts through a sequence of assessment, stabilization, controlled egress, medical transfer and spacecraft recovery. Crew Dragon normally goes onto a recovery ship before its hatch is opened, while Orion’s astronauts exit onto a raft, fly by helicopter to a Navy ship and leave divers and winches to move the capsule into a well deck. The vehicles, teams, equipment and clocks are different, but both systems make the same priority clear: establish that the ocean scene and spacecraft are safe before bringing people aboard.
