NASA astronauts return from the International Space Station in a Crew Dragon through a sequence of orbital maneuvers, a targeted deorbit burn, atmospheric reentry, parachute descent, and a water landing. Recovery teams then secure the capsule, check for hazards, bring it aboard a ship, and assess the crew. The exact timing and splashdown site depend on the mission and conditions.
What happens after Crew Dragon undocks?
Before departure, mission managers weigh weather, recovery readiness, the time required to reach a landing opportunity, and daylight when possible. They assess primary and alternate splashdown locations and revisit the decision at multiple go/no-go points. NASA’s Crew operations reference describes those factors and the current decision process.
Once cleared to leave, Dragon undocks from the ISS and performs departure maneuvers to move away safely. These early burns are not the deorbit burn: they create separation from the station while keeping the return plan on track. The number and timing of maneuvers vary by mission. For example, NASA’s Demo-2 explainer described four departure burns followed by a phasing burn for that flight; that sequence should not be treated as a template for every return.

How does Dragon aim for a splashdown?
After departure, Dragon aligns its orbit with the selected landing opportunity. The spacecraft separates from its trunk before the deorbit maneuver; NASA says the discarded trunk burns up in the atmosphere while the capsule continues toward Earth.

The deorbit burn changes Dragon’s orbital path so it enters the atmosphere on a trajectory aimed at the chosen splashdown region. NASA’s current operations reference describes a final go/no-go decision before this minutes-long burn. If conditions are unsuitable, mission teams can delay or wave off the return rather than commit to the entry.
What happens during reentry?
Dragon enters the atmosphere at high speed, and atmospheric forces and heat make this one of the most demanding parts of the return. For the Demo-2 return in 2020, NASA estimated an entry speed of about 17,500 mph, a maximum temperature around 3,500°F, and an expected communications blackout of about six minutes. Those are Demo-2 estimates, not guaranteed values for every mission.

The spacecraft’s heat protection is built to withstand the reentry environment. During the blackout, communications with the capsule are temporarily unavailable; the interval is part of the expected return profile, not by itself evidence of a problem.
When do the parachutes deploy?
Drogue parachutes deploy first to stabilize and slow the capsule. Main parachutes then open to reduce its speed further for the water landing.

NASA’s Crew-12 mission update dated October 8, 2026, reported drogue deployment at about 18,000 feet and roughly 350 mph, followed by main parachute deployment at about 6,000 feet and roughly 120 mph. These are figures reported for that mission’s return, not universal deployment thresholds. NASA’s Demo-2 explainer described a configuration of two drogues and four main parachutes.
Where does Crew Dragon splash down?
Crew Dragon is designed to land in water, not on a runway. Landing locations are selected for a particular return based on conditions and recovery support, so a past mission’s landing coast does not establish where a future crew will splash down.

NASA’s current operations reference describes three supported sites off California near Los Angeles, Oceanside, and San Diego. An April 2021 NASA recovery article described seven sites off Florida in the context of that earlier recovery operation. The differing lists reflect changing mission context and support arrangements, not a permanent set of landing locations.
NASA and SpaceX coordinate with the FAA and U.S. Coast Guard to protect the landing area. Measures include a 10-nautical-mile safety zone, notices to mariners and air missions, and patrol boats to keep traffic clear.

What do recovery teams do after splashdown?
Two fast boats approach the capsule. One checks its condition and tests for hypergolic fuel vapors before personnel work nearby; the other manages the parachutes. Once the capsule is cleared and secured, the recovery vessel hoists Dragon aboard. The hatch is opened and medical professionals conduct initial crew checks before the astronauts transfer to shore.
NASA’s 2021 recovery article estimated about 45 to 60 minutes from splashdown until crew egress, depending on the spacecraft and sea state. NASA’s current reference describes the operation as about an hour depending on conditions. Neither timing is a fixed promise for every return.
Why can a return be delayed or redirected?
Weather and sea conditions are monitored throughout the process. Criteria can vary with mission-specific spacecraft analyses, and teams consider wind, waves, lightning, rain, and helicopter operating limits. If a site or recovery conditions do not meet the criteria, teams may delay, select another supported site, or wave off and stay in orbit for a later opportunity. NASA’s current reference says a wave-off targets a backup opportunity about 48 hours later.
