NAS drive hibernation can lower power use while disks are idle, but it does not shut down the whole NAS, and background activity may keep the drives spinning. Whether it saves enough to notice on your bill depends on your NAS, how long its drives can stay idle, and your electricity rate. A short timeout is not automatically the best setting: repeated spin-ups and spin-downs trade lower idle draw for extra cycling and slower access.

What drive hibernation does

Drive hibernation is a NAS setting that powers down its internal drives after a period without disk activity. The NAS itself remains on, and drive access ends hibernation. It is different from scheduling the whole NAS to shut down.

On supported Synology models, a separate feature called Drive Advanced Hibernation cuts power to the drive supply to reduce consumption further. Availability depends on the model, so check the manual for your NAS before looking for this option. Synology describes both modes and their support caveats in its hibernation-mode guidance.

Where to enable drive hibernation

Synology DSM

In DSM 7.3 and later, open Control Panel > Hardware & Power > Drive Hibernation. In DSM 7.2 and earlier, the setting is called HDD Hibernation in the same Control Panel section. The exact feature availability varies by NAS model and environment.

QNAP QTS or QuTS hero

Open Control Panel > System > Hardware and enable disk standby mode. This setting does not guarantee that the drives will enter standby; recurring disk activity can prevent it. QNAP’s standby troubleshooting guide explains common causes.

Why NAS drives may never enter standby

Hibernation requires a sufficiently quiet stretch. A NAS can look idle to you while a service or connected device continues to access its disks. Check for activity before disabling anything essential.

  • Recent uploads: indexing and thumbnail generation can keep disks busy after files arrive.
  • Network access and file services: mapped folders, connected clients, or services that check files can trigger reads or writes.
  • Maintenance and protection: monitoring and backup tools may access storage on a schedule.
  • Media and downloads: media services, active downloads, containers, or virtual machines can prevent idle periods.

Use the NAS’s activity and service logs to identify what is touching the disks. If the activity is expected, decide whether the service’s schedule or the hibernation policy should change; do not disable a needed backup, monitoring, or application service just to force standby.

How much power—and bill cost—could hibernation save?

The size of the saving is model- and use-dependent. For example, Synology lists 32.41 W in access and 4.97 W in HDD hibernation for its four-bay DS423. Those are manufacturer specifications for that product, measured using the method described on its specification page; they are not a typical household result, a whole-home estimate, or a prediction for another NAS.

Drive-only power figures also do not equal whole-NAS consumption. Seagate publishes model-specific operating, idle, and standby/sleep figures for its NAS HDDs, but the NAS’s other components and any active services affect the total draw.

To estimate your own bill impact, measure the entire NAS’s wattage while the drives are active and while they are hibernating, then account for how many hours it actually spends in each state and your electricity rate. Without those readings and your tariff, a dollar estimate would be guesswork. The cited manufacturer pages do not establish a typical household saving or a universal lifespan effect.

Should you use standby, leave disks spinning, or schedule power?

The right choice depends on how often the NAS is accessed, how long it stays genuinely idle, and how quickly files need to be available. Hibernating drives can reduce idle consumption, but the disks must spin up again on access, which can delay availability. If activity repeatedly wakes the drives, the saving may be limited while spin cycles become more frequent.

QNAP’s support article, modified 2025-12-16, warns: “While standby mode reduces power consumption, frequent spin-ups and spin-downs cause more wear and tear compared to constant spinning.” It recommends considering a power schedule instead of standby. That is QNAP’s guidance; the cited material does not quantify a universal drive-life penalty. A schedule may suit a NAS with predictable periods of non-use, while a device that must remain available around the clock may be better left running. Weigh the options against your own measured whole-NAS power, access pattern, and required availability.
