Music platforms look for patterns that suggest plays are artificial rather than genuine listening. Publicly described signals include listening time, listener geography, artist-specific activity, and whether saves or follows make sense relative to a track’s stream volume. Services combine signals through proprietary systems, so no public checklist reveals exactly how to avoid detection—or guarantees that any single unusual pattern will trigger enforcement.

What counts as a fake stream?

“Fake plays” is an informal umbrella term. Music services and industry bodies more often use terms such as artificial streaming and stream manipulation: plays created or arranged in ways that do not represent genuine listening. The Centre national de la musique (CNM), in a 2023 study release, described manipulation as artificial creation of plays or views by human or non-human means to generate income, improve chart position, or influence recommendations such as playlists and search.

That includes more than automated bots. Schemes can involve scripts, click farms, compromised accounts, playlist stuffing, or paid services that promise a guaranteed number of plays or a playlist placement. In some cases, a track may be pushed into suspicious activity without the artist knowingly arranging it. The mechanism matters: a bot farm is not the only way to create inauthentic plays, and an artist seeing an unexpected spike cannot infer its cause from the count alone.

The incentives can be financial and promotional. Artificial plays may divert a share of royalties from legitimate listening, make popularity appear higher than it is, alter charts, or affect recommendation systems. The U.S. Copyright Office’s October 2026 notice describes royalty dilution as one economic consequence: when artificial activity enters a royalty pool, legitimate streams may receive a smaller share.

What signals can platforms examine?

Platforms can compare activity across streams, accounts, tracks, and time, rather than judging a play in isolation. The U.S. Copyright Office’s October 2026 notice identifies examples of metrics digital music providers may evaluate, including listening time, user locations, streams of particular artists, and the relationship between saves or follows and total streams. These are examples, not a complete list or a universal recipe: the notice does not say every service uses every metric or disclose how much weight any signal receives.

Listening behavior and context

Duration and listening patterns can help distinguish ordinary use from activity that looks automated or coordinated. Geography and patterns around particular artists can add context. A service may also look at engagement alongside stream volume: for example, the proportion of listeners who save or follow relative to the number of plays. None of those observations alone proves manipulation. Legitimate listening can be uneven, and a surge may have an ordinary explanation such as a campaign or exposure from a major playlist.

Audio identity, reports, and proprietary models

Apple’s partner guidance describes digital fingerprints for audio, video, and images as one way to help identify impersonation before delivery, as well as proprietary detection models and partner reporting. Apple says it has models to identify content generated by AI platforms; it also says a song is automatically removed when the majority of plays for an AI-platform-generated song are manipulated. These are Apple’s descriptions of its own systems, not independently audited technical findings.

Apple’s guidance describes reports for flagged streams, content under review, excluded streams, and financial adjustments. Its September 28, 2026 provider announcement added a Disguised Listening Report for partners. Apple says manipulators may target one piece of content while playing unrelated material alongside it as cover; the report shows where a partner’s content has been used as cover. According to Apple, that cover activity is not counted toward the Stream Manipulation Adjustment. The report became available through the Music Analytics API on September 28, 2026; Apple said existing daily Flagged Streams and In Review Content reports and fiscal-period Excluded Streams reports remained available.

Detection can happen at different levels

There is no single publicly established industry design. The CNM’s 2023 account of interviews with participating platforms described Deezer and Qobuz as applying algorithms at account level, while Spotify applied them at track and album level. This is a dated description of the platforms studied, not a current specification for every service. The CNM also noted that account-level detection can produce false positives. Rights holders generally have less access to user data than platforms, although they can compare a release’s performance across services.

Platforms do not publish complete model architectures, feature weights, thresholds, or comprehensive false-positive rates in the cited material. Treat public signals as examples of broad analytical categories, not a checklist for evading detection or a way to diagnose a specific flag.

How platform disclosures differ

The available disclosures show differences in public reporting and remedies, not a complete side-by-side view of each platform’s internal technology. Historical CNM findings should not be mistaken for current platform specifications.

Service or source Publicly described approach or reporting Possible consequences or limits
Spotify Spotify describes detecting and removing confirmed artificial streams and sending monthly reports about them to labels and distributors. The cited support guidance does not disclose a complete signal list or detection threshold. Public metrics may be adjusted; associated royalties may be withheld; charts or playlists may be affected; distributors or labels may be notified. A distributor may warn an artist, impose a fee, remove content, or suspend an account under its own arrangements.
Apple Music Apple describes proprietary models, digital fingerprints, and daily and monthly partner reports. Its September 28, 2026 Disguised Listening Report is available through the Music Analytics API. Apple says suspected takedowns receive human review. Its Disguised Listening Report is monitoring information and, according to Apple, is not counted toward the Stream Manipulation Adjustment.
CNM study of participating platforms The 2023 study release described account-level algorithms at Deezer and Qobuz and track- and album-level algorithms at Spotify, based on participating platform interviews. This is a historical study description, not a current technical specification. The release notes that account-level detection can lead to false positives.

What happens when activity is confirmed?

Consequences vary by service, timing, and the agreements between an artist and their distributor or label. A confirmed finding is not necessarily handled as a simple public warning.

Counts, royalties, charts, and playlists

Spotify says confirmed artificial streams are removed from public stream and monthly-listener metrics. A Spotify for Artists dashboard may still show a private artificial spike temporarily even after public metrics are corrected. Spotify may withhold associated royalties, adjust chart treatment, or remove a track from playlists. In repeated or egregious cases, it may remove manipulated content.

Spotify says it sends monthly reports on confirmed artificial streams to labels and distributors. A distributor may then warn an artist, impose a fee, or take stronger action—including content removal or account suspension—in flagrant or repeated cases. Whether a charge applies, who is responsible for it, and what other remedies are available depend on the relevant distributor agreement and notice; do not assume a platform fee is automatically billed directly to an artist.

Apple reporting and review

Apple’s partner materials distinguish flagged, in-review, excluded, and financially adjusted streams. A flag or report should not be confused with a final content-removal decision. Apple says removal is a last resort and that suspected manipulation is reviewed by a human before content is taken down. Its reports give partners information about activity and adjustments, but the public guidance does not supply a complete appeal procedure or a universal timetable for an individual case.

Why the financial stakes can be substantial

The Copyright Office’s October 2026 notice recounts the Michael Smith case: it says the defendant created thousands of bot accounts to stream uploaded tracks and fraudulently collected approximately $10 million in royalties. The notice says Smith pleaded guilty in March 2026 and that sentencing was scheduled for October 2026. That figure describes the case as recounted by the notice; it is not a typical return from a manipulation scheme.

How common is stream manipulation?

Public estimates have different owners, methods, years, and geographic scopes, so they should not be added together or treated as competing measurements of one global rate.

Estimate Scope and attribution How to interpret it
“Well below 1%” Apple Music’s 2026 provider guidance describes this as its stream-manipulation rate. The cited page does not provide methodology or a comparison basis. It is Apple’s platform-specific statement, not a global prevalence estimate.
1%–3% detected fraud CNM’s 2023 release reported this range for participating platforms in France in 2021, based on participating platforms and supplied data. It is historical, geographically specific, and limited to the study’s participants and data. It does not establish a current worldwide rate.
1–3 billion detected streams CNM’s 2023 release tied this range to its estimate of detected fraud in France in 2021 and the market figures used in the study. This is not a current annual count or an estimate for every market.

The U.S. Copyright Office’s October 2026 notice is an inquiry seeking public input on prevalence, impacts, detection efforts, and possible responses. It is a fact-gathering process, not a final determination of how common manipulation is. The available figures do not share a disclosed measurement protocol, so a precise industry-wide rate cannot be inferred from them.

What artists and managers should do

Avoid guaranteed-play offers

Do not pay a company or individual who promises a guaranteed stream count or playlist placement. Spotify says paid third-party services that guarantee streams are not legitimate and says using them can lead to removal of artificial streams and other action. Apple tells artists that companies or people claiming they can obtain more Apple Music plays for a fee are not authorized by Apple. A paid promotion may be legitimate in other forms, but a guaranteed outcome tied to plays or placement is a warning sign.

Document legitimate promotion if a spike is questioned

  1. Keep campaign records. Save invoices, campaign dates, placement details, and the names of legitimate promotional channels. Keep records that can explain where listeners came from without exposing private listener information.
  2. Contact your distributor or label. Share the records and the relevant platform notice or reporting period. Spotify specifically advises artists to provide information about genuine promotion so a distributor or label can work with Spotify to review the case.
  3. Report suspicious playlists. Spotify provides a route for artists to report playlists they suspect of manipulation. Include the playlist and relevant details through the reporting process rather than paying someone to investigate or retaliate.
  4. Read the applicable agreement and notice. Check what your distributor says about artificial streams, fees, warnings, and account or content action. Do not assume that every platform action or charge follows the same process.

A sudden increase in plays, low engagement, or an unfamiliar playlist is not proof by itself that a track was manipulated. Preserve evidence and use the platform or distributor’s reporting channels rather than trying to reproduce the activity, buy counter-traffic, or make unsupported public accusations.

What the public evidence cannot tell you

Public materials establish that services monitor activity and may take action, but they do not reveal a complete detection recipe. The cited sources do not establish each platform’s current thresholds, feature weights, full model architecture, comprehensive false-positive rate, or a standardized definition and measurement method shared across the industry. A platform may also have user-level information that artists and rights holders cannot see.

That limits what an artist can conclude from a dashboard. A count may be corrected after the fact; private and public metrics may temporarily differ; and an alert, a review, an exclusion, and a content takedown are distinct events. When a specific release is affected, the useful evidence is the service or distributor’s notice and the artist’s records of legitimate activity—not a guessed algorithm or a general industry percentage.
