Streaming services generally do not pay a fixed amount every time a song plays. They calculate royalty pools under licensing agreements, allocate those pools according to eligible listening in a market, and pay the relevant rights holders. What an artist or songwriter ultimately receives depends on who owns the rights and on the contracts and payment arrangements downstream.
That is why a figure such as “Spotify pays X per stream” is usually an estimate: someone has divided a payment by a stream count. It can illustrate a particular set of assumptions, but it is not a guaranteed price for a play or a reliable forecast of an individual’s take-home income.
How a streaming royalty calculation works
A useful way to understand the calculation is to separate it into two stages: first, the service determines and allocates the royalty pool; then, rights holders and their business partners distribute the money under their agreements. A stream count alone cannot reveal either the size of the relevant pool or the share an individual artist will receive.
1. A royalty pool is determined under licensing agreements
Streaming services license music from rights holders. The agreements that govern those licenses determine how royalties are calculated. Spotify’s annual report says music royalties are typically calculated monthly under negotiated license agreements. Depending on the agreement, calculations may take subscription revenue, advertising revenue, user or usage measures, or a combination of those factors into account.

That means the pool can vary with factors such as a market’s revenue, the mix of subscription and advertising listening, and the terms negotiated for the relevant rights. The calculation is not simply a universal amount multiplied by every stream worldwide.
2. Listening share helps allocate the pool
Spotify describes its recording-royalty allocation in terms of streamshare. For a particular month and country, the basic idea is to compare an artist’s or rightsholder’s eligible streams with all streams in that market, then apply that share to the market’s royalty pool. In simplified form:
Share of eligible streams in a market × that market’s royalty pool = an approximate share of that pool
For example, assume a hypothetical market has a $100,000 royalty pool and a rightsholder accounts for 2% of the eligible streams counted in that market for the relevant period. The simplified pool allocation would be $2,000 before any further rights-holder arrangements or deductions. These numbers are only an illustration; they are not a reported service payout or a prediction of an artist’s earnings.

Spotify’s Loud & Clear FAQ describes this as a monthly, country-by-country calculation. A share in one market therefore does not, on its own, describe a share in another market or the amount ultimately paid to an individual performer.
3. The allocation is not automatically an artist’s personal payment
The pool calculation concerns payments to rights holders, not necessarily the money that lands in an artist’s account. A recording may have multiple rights holders, and the service’s payment goes to the licensor that delivered the music. Spotify says that licensor is typically a label or distributor. The rights holder then pays artists according to the relevant agreements.
Songwriting royalties are a separate part of the picture. A songwriter’s publishing rights are distinct from the recording rights in a released track. Publishers and collection societies may be involved in administering or distributing publishing-side payments, so a recording-royalty statement is not necessarily a complete account of what a songwriter is owed.

Why there is no dependable universal “per-stream rate”
A per-stream estimate is usually a ratio: a reported or estimated payment divided by a stream count. That ratio may be useful as a rough illustration of a particular payout, but it does not establish a fixed price that a service owes for each play. Spotify Support explicitly says it does not pay artist royalties according to a per-play or per-stream rate, and notes that payments can vary with how music is streamed and with agreements artists have with labels or distributors.

Even when two estimates use the same arithmetic, they can describe different things. One may reflect a particular month, market, repertoire, or rights category; another may use a different denominator or include different revenue. Neither necessarily represents an artist’s share after contractual deductions. Without the relevant pool, territory, counted streams, rights ownership, and agreements, a stream total cannot be converted into a reliable take-home figure.
Spotify’s broad payout figures illustrate why their scope matters. The company reported paying more than $11 billion to the music industry in 2025 in a January 28, 2026 newsroom post. That is an overall industry payout figure, not an individual artist earnings forecast. Spotify Loud & Clear also gives a 2025 example of more than $11,000 on average for artists who accounted for one in every million Spotify streams. That is Spotify’s platform-specific average example for that year, not a guaranteed rate per million streams or a figure that can be applied to another service, year, or artist contract.
How Spotify and Apple Music can—and cannot—be compared
Spotify and Apple Music both describe streaming royalties using stream-share language in their published artist materials. That makes streamshare a relevant concept for understanding both services, but it does not establish that they use identical pool definitions, licensing terms, eligibility rules, or payment arrangements. Apple Music for Artists also notes that a play has a value, but that statement should not be read as proof of a fixed, universal price for every play.

The table compares what the cited official materials establish; it is not a complete comparison of every country, license, or right. The available details do not support a reliable claim that one service always pays more than the other for the same stream count. A fair comparison would need to match the market, period, rights category, pool basis, eligibility and counting rules, and the artist’s own contractual arrangements.

What Spotify’s 1,000-stream rule means
Spotify’s recorded-music policy, effective April 2024, requires a track to reach at least 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months to be included in Spotify’s recorded-music royalty-pool calculation. This is a Spotify-specific eligibility rule for recorded music. It is not a rule for the entire streaming industry, and it does not establish a threshold for songwriter royalties across services.
Eligibility and payment are different questions. Meeting the threshold means a track can be included in the specified Spotify pool calculation; it does not promise a particular payment, set a per-stream rate, or determine how a label, distributor, publisher, or other rights holder will pay an artist. Conversely, a threshold described for Spotify should not be assumed to apply to Apple Music or another service.

There can be several steps between a platform’s pool allocation and an individual’s receipt. The path depends on ownership and contracts, but a typical recording-side route is:
- Service to licensor: the streaming service pays the rights holder or licensor responsible for the recording. Spotify says its recording royalties go to the licensor selected to deliver the music, typically a label or distributor.
- Licensor accounting: the label or distributor accounts for the payment under its agreement with the artist. The amount and timing depend on those private terms.
- Artist payment: the artist receives the amount due under the applicable agreement, which may be affected by fees, splits, recoupment, or other provisions where those terms apply.
- Separate publishing route: songwriter royalties may be administered through a publisher or collection society under separate publishing arrangements.
Spotify Support says it cannot determine an individual artist’s payment because it does not know the private agreements artists and songwriters have with labels, publishers, or collecting societies. Payment amounts and timing therefore cannot be inferred from a platform’s stream total alone. The relevant statements and contracts are the documents that can show how a particular payment was calculated and divided.

Spotify Loud & Clear says roughly two-thirds of every dollar generated from music goes to artists’ and songwriters’ rights holders. This is Spotify’s broad description of payments to rights holders. It does not mean an individual artist personally receives two-thirds of subscription revenue: money is paid to rights holders, and the eventual artist or songwriter share depends on the relevant ownership and agreements.
How to assess a per-stream estimate
Before using a published estimate to plan a release or compare platforms, identify what the number actually measures. An estimate with missing context may be arithmetic, not a dependable description of your own royalties.
- Check the service and period. A figure for Spotify in one year does not establish a figure for Apple Music or another period.
- Check the market. Spotify describes streamshare by month and country; a figure combining markets may conceal different pools and listening shares.
- Check what is being divided. Find out whether the numerator is a platform payout to rights holders, a distributor statement, or an artist’s net receipt—and whether the denominator is the same set of streams.
- Check the rights category. Recording royalties and songwriter publishing royalties are separate. A figure for one should not be treated as a combined total.
- Check eligibility and counting assumptions. Rules that determine which streams enter a pool can affect the calculation. Spotify’s 1,000-stream rule applies to its recorded-music pool under the stated policy, not generally to all services or rights.
- Check the contract and deductions. Distributor fees, label terms, publishing splits, recoupment, and payment schedules can affect the individual receipt; their impact cannot be determined without the actual terms.
If those details are unavailable, treat the result as a rough illustration, not a quote, guaranteed rate, or personal income forecast. To understand an actual payment, compare the service or distributor statement with the applicable rights and distribution agreements, and separate recording-side and publishing-side amounts.

A meaningful comparison between two services needs more than a single dollar-per-stream estimate. Use the same questions for each service and market:
- Pool basis: Which subscription, advertising, or other revenue contributes under the service’s licensing arrangements?
- Allocation method: Does the service describe market-wide streamshare or another method, and what market or period does it use?
- Eligibility and counting: Which plays qualify, and are there stated thresholds, exclusions, or other counting rules?
- Rights and payment flow: Who receives recording payments, and how are publishing rights handled?
- Artist-side terms: What do the label, distributor, publisher, or collection-society agreements say about splits, deductions, recoupment, and timing?
For Spotify and Apple Music, official materials support a stream-share description, but the cited information does not supply a complete, matched formula set for every major service. A service-by-service ranking based on an unqualified “rate” would imply more certainty than the published information supports.
