Music licensing determines which songs a rhythm game can offer, where and how they can be used, and sometimes how long they remain on sale. When a deal expires, a publisher may stop selling a game or song pack, remove tracks from a subscription, or negotiate new rights for a different product. A delisting does not necessarily erase a previous purchase—but access after removal depends on the specific game and its policy.
Why songs disappear from rhythm games
A rhythm game needs permission to include music in the product or service that players use. Ubisoft’s Rocksmith development team describes licensing as involving careful work and discussions with artists and labels, calling proper licensing “one of the foundations Rocksmith stands on.” Those arrangements shape the available catalog: a song can be offered while a relevant agreement is in effect, but the publisher may have to change its offering when that agreement expires or is not renewed.
This is why a track’s presence in one game does not establish that it can appear in every other game, service, or version. A publisher may negotiate separately for a new product or subscription. Ubisoft said in a July 2021 Rocksmith+ developer diary that the subscription service used “brand new licensing deals” and required renegotiating music deals. Rights for one title therefore do not automatically carry into another.

Those uses can have different consequences, and the examples below describe publisher policies rather than a universal legal rule.

What can change when a license expires
A game or song can leave the store
A publisher may stop selling the base game, individual songs, or packs when its rights or commercial arrangements change. Ubisoft announced that Rocksmith 2014 would be removed from sale on October 23, 2023, and said DLC packs and singles would be delisted over time. The announcement also provided scheduled removal information for songs and packs. Those dates describe Ubisoft’s announced schedule, not a guarantee about the current status of every storefront or region.
Delisting usually concerns whether a new buyer can purchase the content through a store. That is a separate question from whether an existing owner can still use it. Check the publisher’s notice for both points rather than treating “removed” as a single outcome.
A subscription catalog can change independently
Tracks in a subscription are part of that service’s catalog, not necessarily permanent purchases. A publisher can make a new deal for a subscription, change the tracks it offers, or maintain a separate catalog in another product. Ubisoft’s April 2024 announcement about selected Just Dance songs illustrated that separation: it set different removal dates for Just Dance Now and Just Dance Unlimited while stating that the Just Dance+ catalog would not be affected by those removals. That was the position in the 2024 announcement; it should not be read as a statement of current song availability.

Renewed rights may bring back selected content
Expiration does not rule out a later return. Ubisoft has said that after original Rocksmith music licenses expired, it made Rocksmith 2014 Learn & Play available as a one-time purchase on Steam and was working to relicense some popular songs that had disappeared from stores. This shows that a publisher may seek new rights for specific material. It does not promise that every removed song will return, or that a re-licensed song will be offered on every platform or in every product.
What happens to songs you already bought?
There is no single rule for every rhythm game. Ubisoft’s Rocksmith 2014 notice explicitly said that people who had already bought the game or its DLC could continue to install, download again, play, and use those products after delisting. People who had not bought them would no longer be able to make a digital purchase once the items were removed from stores.
That is a documented policy for Rocksmith 2014, not a promise that other games preserve access in the same way. A store removal, a service-catalog change, and loss of access to a previously purchased item are distinct events. A publisher might preserve existing-owner access, but readers should look for an explicit statement before assuming that will happen.

Before a delisting date, check whether the notice addresses the base game, each DLC item, and your platform. If you already own content, confirm how to install or redownload it through the platform account that made the purchase. Keep relevant account and transaction information. These are practical precautions, not a guarantee that every title will remain downloadable indefinitely; only the publisher’s stated policy can establish its treatment of that product.

No automatic carryover was promised. Ubisoft’s July 2021 Rocksmith+ diary said the subscription used new licensing deals and would initially include less than a majority of the songs available in Rocksmith 2014. The fact that a player owned a Rocksmith 2014 track, or could play it in that game, did not mean the track was licensed for Rocksmith+.
That example is useful beyond Rocksmith: ownership and catalog licensing answer different questions. Ownership describes a player’s purchase in a particular product; licensing describes what the publisher can offer in a particular product or service. A change of game, subscription, platform, or use context can mean a different rights arrangement is needed. Check the receiving game’s own catalog and terms rather than treating an earlier purchase as proof of transfer.

The table captures specific publisher statements, not a ranking of services or a universal industry policy. Catalogs can change after an announcement, so use the current store listing and the publisher’s latest notice when making a decision about a particular song.

Being able to play a track inside a game does not necessarily mean that a player can freely publish recordings of that gameplay. Epic’s creator guidance for Fortnite Festival warned that third-party copyright-detection systems may flag VODs or clips featuring selected Jam Tracks, and recommended disabling those tracks while streaming. A platform’s detection or claim process concerns sharing recorded audio; it is separate from whether the game itself currently lets a player play a track.

That guidance was published for the game’s launch period, so it should not be treated as current operational advice without checking Epic’s latest creator guidance and the rules of the platform where a stream or clip will appear. A setting with “mute” in its name may have a limited scope, and should not be assumed to remove every licensed song from every game mode or recording.

Fortnite Festival: a mode change is not a catalog guarantee
Epic’s support page, checked in October 2026, said Fortnite Festival was not ending. It stated that Battle Stage went offline on April 16, 2026, while Main Stage and Jam Stage, along with music features across Fortnite, would continue to be improved. The status of one mode and the availability of individual songs are separate questions: Epic’s statement about ongoing Festival development does not guarantee that every song remains in the game.
For a specific track, look for a song-level notice or current in-game listing. For a mode, check the current support page. For streaming, consult current creator guidance and the rules of the platform carrying the content. These checks answer different questions, even when they all concern the same game.
How to check a song or DLC before you act
- Identify the exact product. Note the game, service, platform, and—if relevant—the mode. A track listed in one game or subscription may not be available in another.
- Check the current listing. Look in the game’s store or catalog for the song or pack. A historic announcement tells you what was planned or stated at that time, not necessarily what is on sale now.
- Read the publisher’s notice for the specific change. Determine whether it concerns a sale ending, a subscription catalog removal, a mode shutdown, or a change to an existing owner’s access. Do not infer one from another.
- If you own the DLC, check the stated redownload policy. Use the account and platform associated with the purchase, and follow the publisher’s instructions. Rocksmith 2014’s preserved access was explicitly stated by Ubisoft; other titles require their own confirmation.
- If you plan to stream or publish a clip, check audio guidance separately. Verify which tracks and modes the creator rules cover, what the game’s audio controls actually mute, and whether the platform may flag the recording.
- Recheck volatile information near the date you need it. Store availability, subscription catalogs, mode status, and creator-facing guidance can change. Confirm the relevant region and platform as well as the date.
What licensing changes mean for players
For someone considering a purchase, the practical question is not only “Is this song in the game?” but also whether the item is a one-time purchase or part of a changing service catalog, and what the publisher has said about access after removal. For someone who already owns DLC, the key evidence is the title-specific policy on continued play and redownloads. For someone moving to a sequel or subscription, a track’s presence in the earlier game is not evidence of transfer.

The examples show why “the music was licensed” is not a permanent, all-purpose answer. A deal can be attached to a particular product or service, and publishers can respond to changes by delisting content, maintaining access for previous buyers, negotiating new agreements, or keeping another catalog unaffected. The details—and the dates—matter more than the broad label of a game or franchise.
