Multiplayer survival games combine a survival simulation with a network model. The simulation governs gathering, crafting, construction, creatures, hazards, and progression; the network model determines who can change that world, how those changes reach other players, and whether the world remains available when its usual host is offline. Co-op, PvE, and PvP are rule choices applied to that shared simulation, while peer-to-peer hosting and dedicated servers determine persistence and administration.
What multiplayer survival actually combines
Every multiplayer survival game has two interlocking layers. The first is the survival simulation: players collect resources, craft equipment, build bases, fight creatures, manage hazards, and advance through a progression system. The second is the multiplayer model: a computer must accept actions, update the authoritative world state, and distribute the results to everyone connected.
That distinction explains why two games can both advertise “co-op survival” yet feel very different. One may make the host’s computer responsible for the session and disappear when that player quits. Another may run continuously on a dedicated server, allowing friends to return to the same base at any time. A third may use the same building and crafting systems but permit raids and player damage.

Co-op, PvE, and PvP are different rule layers
These terms describe the relationship between players and the threats in the simulation. They do not, by themselves, tell you whether the world is hosted by a player or by a dedicated machine.
| Mode or rule | Who threatens players | Typical consequences | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Co-op | Players work together against the game | Shared building, resource gathering, combat, and progression | A private group that wants a joint campaign |
| PvE | Environmental systems, creatures, and hazards | Player damage is disabled or limited, depending on server rules | Building and exploration without routine player raids |
| Consensual or opt-in PvP | Environmental threats plus player combat when enabled | Players can challenge one another without making every encounter hostile | Groups that want occasional duels or competitive events |
| Always-on PvP | Environmental threats and other players at all times | Combat, raiding, theft, or loss can come from other players | Competitive communities that accept higher risk |
Co-op is about cooperation, not hosting
Co-op means that players pursue a common objective: sharing resources, defending a settlement, defeating bosses, or progressing through the same world. A co-op game can run as a host session or on a dedicated server. It can also include optional player-versus-player damage if the game allows it.
PvE protects the group from player damage
PvE, or player versus environment, keeps the main threat model focused on creatures, weather, hunger, terrain, and other systems controlled by the game. Some servers make PvE absolute; others allow limited duels, protected zones, or consensual combat. Check the individual game’s settings rather than assuming that “PvE” means every form of player interaction is disabled.

PvP, or player versus player, adds human opponents to the threat model. Depending on the rules, an opponent may be able to damage a character, destroy a base, take stored resources, or kill tamed creatures. The important questions are whether PvP is always active, whether it is consensual, and what can be lost after defeat.
How the host model controls persistence
The answer to “Does the world keep running when the host is offline?” depends mainly on the hosting model.

Peer-to-peer or player-hosted sessions
In a peer-to-peer session, one player starts the world and acts as the session host. This is usually the simplest option for a small group: the host selects the world, invites friends, and begins playing without arranging a separate server. The trade-off is availability. If the host shuts down the session, other players normally cannot enter that world until the host starts it again.
Host-based play can also tie performance and connection quality to the host’s hardware and internet connection. The exact behavior varies by game, but the practical test is straightforward: if the game’s join screen lists a friend’s running session rather than an independent server, that friend is probably the availability gate.
Dedicated servers
A dedicated server is a separate process or machine intended to keep a world available independently of any one player’s game client. Iron Gate describes its Valheim dedicated-server option as providing “a persistent world in which you and your friends can play anytime.” The server guide covers the world name, network ports, password, save locations, and crossplay configuration.
When the dedicated process remains online, players can join at different times, and the world can be administered without requiring the original host to launch the game. The server still needs reliable hardware, network access, storage, updates, and backups. “Always available” means the server process is running and reachable; it does not mean every game simulates every creature or resource while nobody is connected.
What happens when the host is absent
Use this rule of thumb:
- Player-hosted session: the world is generally unavailable to others while the host is offline.
- Dedicated server: the world can remain online for the group as long as the server is running and reachable.
- Any model: a crash, maintenance stop, password change, version mismatch, or network failure can still prevent access.
Authority, synchronization, and shared state
The authoritative side of a multiplayer game decides which action becomes part of the world. In a dedicated-server design, that authority is normally the server. In a host session, the host’s machine commonly performs that role. Clients send actions such as movement, building, inventory use, or attacks; the authoritative simulation validates them and sends updated results back.

This arrangement prevents each player from maintaining a contradictory version of the same base or creature. It also explains common multiplayer symptoms:
- Latency: a delayed connection can make a door, enemy, or building appear to move after the player has already acted.
- Conflicts: two players trying to claim the same resource or place the same object are resolved by whichever update the authority accepts first.
- Desynchronization: a client may need to reconnect or receive a correction if its local view differs from the server’s state.
- Administrative control: the authority can apply passwords, permissions, damage rules, resets, and configuration changes consistently to everyone.
Minecraft Bedrock’s server-side scripting model illustrates why event logic must identify the responsible player. A script sees all entities in the shared world and cannot assume that there is only one player causing an event.
How major survival games apply these choices
Valheim
Valheim is designed primarily as a small-group co-op survival game. Its default emphasis is PvE, while PvP is consensual rather than automatically imposed on every player. The Valheim FAQ states that servers support up to 10 simultaneous players; that figure is a documented game limit, not a general limit for survival games. A player-created session is convenient for a short group session, whereas a dedicated server separates world availability from the owner’s game client.
Minecraft Bedrock
Minecraft Bedrock’s shared server-side world model allows many players, entities, and systems to coexist in one state. The practical consequence is that farms, constructions, mobs, inventories, and scripted events must be reconciled by the server rather than treated as private player data. Server-side scripts can inspect the complete entity population, which is useful for automation but requires event handlers to distinguish among players.
ARK
ARK’s official support distinguishes PvE, PvP, and ARKpocalypse-style modes. That separation demonstrates how a single survival framework can change substantially through server rules. The mode determines whether players can attack one another, while reset-oriented variants show that progression and world lifespan are also server-policy decisions. Before joining, read the server’s mode and reset information instead of inferring behavior from the game’s name alone.

Rust
Rust’s server-gamemode documentation shows that operators can select and tune modes including Survival/Vanilla and Softcore. Those modes can alter PvP damage rules and other expectations. A server’s label therefore matters: two servers running the same game can offer very different levels of danger, loss, and protection.
Group size, progression, and loss
Player count is only one part of a good multiplayer fit. Ask how the game treats the following items:
- World ownership: Is the map shared by everyone, or can characters move between worlds?
- Construction: Can any player build anywhere, or do permissions protect claims and bases?
- Inventory: Does death drop equipment, destroy it, return it to a recovery point, or leave it protected?
- Creatures and companions: Can another player kill, claim, or use a tamed creature?
- Progression: Are discoveries and unlocks shared by the group or earned separately?
- Resets and wipes: Does the operator periodically reset the map, characters, structures, or resources?
- Access control: Can the owner require a password, assign permissions, or remove a disruptive player?
These settings often matter more than the word “co-op.” A friendly PvE server with shared building can still frustrate a group if each character must unlock technology alone. Conversely, a PvP server can suit a team that understands exactly what a wipe or raid can remove.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a dedicated server is worth using
Choose a dedicated server when the group needs an independent meeting place rather than a session that follows one person’s schedule. It is especially useful when:
- Friends play at different times and need to enter the same world independently.
- The host’s computer or connection cannot stay online reliably.
- The group wants scheduled events, controlled permissions, or a consistent password.
- The operator needs access to saves, backups, logs, configuration, or crossplay options.
- The community is large enough that one player should not also be the session host.
Stay with a hosted session when the group is small, plays together at the same time, and values quick setup over continuous availability. A dedicated server adds administration and maintenance; it is not automatically better for a two-person weekend campaign.

Dedicated-server setup decisions
The exact menus and files differ by game, but the decisions are consistent. Iron Gate’s Valheim guide provides a useful example of the information an operator must define.
- Choose the world and its name. Decide whether to create a new map or use an existing save, and record the exact world name so players select the intended instance.
- Set access protection. Use a strong password and restrict administrative privileges to trusted operators.
- Configure network ports. Open and forward the ports required by the game and firewall. A server that runs locally but cannot be reached from outside usually has a port, firewall, or address problem.
- Select crossplay behavior. If players use different platforms, enable the game’s supported crossplay option and confirm that every client is on a compatible version.
- Locate the save files. Know where the world data is stored before the first major build. Back up the save while the server is stopped or according to the game’s safe-save procedure.
- Document rules. Write down PvE or PvP settings, wipe policy, restart times, moderation rules, and who can change configuration.
- Test with one client. Join from the same network and, if possible, from an external connection before inviting the whole group.
Troubleshooting common multiplayer failures
Friends cannot see the world
First determine whether it is a hosted session or a dedicated server. For a hosted session, the owner must be in the game and accepting connections. For a dedicated server, verify that the process is running, the address and port are correct, the firewall allows the game, and the server and clients use compatible versions.
The world opens but progress is missing
Check that players joined the intended world name and save location. Multiple saves with similar names can make a healthy server appear to have rolled back. Stop the server cleanly, inspect the timestamped backups, and restore only after preserving the current files.

Players see different creatures or structures
That symptom points to synchronization or connection trouble rather than a normal PvE/PvP rule. Have affected players reconnect, reduce competing network traffic, and check server logs for errors. Do not delete the world until a backup confirms that the data itself is damaged.
Combat rules are not what the group expected
Read the active server mode and its configuration rather than relying on a launcher label. Valheim can use consensual PvP; ARK separates PvE and PvP modes; Rust’s selected gamemode can change PvP damage behavior. A rule change may require a restart and can affect everyone already in the world.
A practical decision framework
| Question | If your answer is this | Prefer |
|---|---|---|
| Should players be threatened by one another? | No | PvE or co-op rules with player damage disabled |
| Should friends duel occasionally? | Yes, by agreement | Consensual or opt-in PvP |
| Should raids and ambushes be part of normal play? | Yes | Always-on PvP, after confirming loss and reset rules |
| Must the world be available without one person? | Yes | Dedicated server |
| Do all players usually play together? | Yes | Player-hosted session may be sufficient |
| Do you need permissions, backups, or scheduled maintenance? | Yes | Dedicated server with an assigned administrator |
The most reliable way to choose is to decide in this order: threat model, persistence, authority, group scale, rule control, and acceptable progression loss. Once those choices are explicit, the difference between a convenient co-op session and a persistent shared world becomes clear.
