Multiphysics simulation helps electric-racing engineers see how one design choice affects the rest of the car before they commit to hardware. A battery change can alter heat and power delivery; a cooling change can affect mass and airflow; more aerodynamic downforce can improve grip while increasing drag and energy use. Coupled models let teams test those tradeoffs against defined tracks, loads, temperatures, and energy limits. They help identify promising designs and risks earlier, but they do not guarantee a faster or more reliable car: physical tests and validation against evidence remain essential.
Why electric race-car design needs more than a component model
An electric race car is a set of connected physical systems, not a collection of components that can always be optimized independently. The battery supplies electrical power, the inverter and motor convert it into wheel torque, cooling systems manage heat, and the chassis and tires transmit forces to the track. Aerodynamics affects grip and drag, while vehicle controls determine how power and torque are delivered. A change in one area can therefore shift the limits elsewhere.
For example, increasing power may improve acceleration in a short interval but also increase electrical demand and heat. A cooling solution may help control temperature but require packaging space, airflow, or additional mass. More downforce can help the tires generate grip, yet the associated drag can consume energy. The useful design question is not simply whether a component is better on its own; it is whether the whole vehicle performs better within its operating and race constraints.

Formula E’s October 7, 2026 announcement of its partnership with COMSOL describes the challenge in terms of electrical, thermal, structural, electromagnetic, fluid, and battery systems. Those are examples of physical domains that may need to be considered together. The precise domains to couple depend on the decision under study: a battery-cooling question does not require the same model detail as a vehicle-dynamics or aerodynamic question.

What multiphysics simulation includes—and what it does not
Multiphysics simulation represents interactions between physical phenomena in a model. It is not a synonym for every kind of computer simulation used in racing. Component-level models, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), vehicle or lap simulation, and optimization can all contribute to a connected workflow, but answer different questions.
| Approach | What it can represent | Typical design question |
|---|---|---|
| Component or multiphysics model | Couplings such as battery electrical behavior and heat, motor electromagnetic behavior and temperature, or structural response under load. | Will a component remain within its performance or temperature limits under a specified demand? |
| CFD | Airflow around the car, cooling flows, aerodynamic forces, and drag. | How might an aero or cooling-layout change affect airflow and loads? |
| Vehicle and lap simulation | Vehicle dynamics, component behavior, energy limits, and track conditions combined at vehicle or lap level. | How do alternative setups or operating strategies compare over a particular track scenario? |
| Optimization | A search across design or control choices using defined objectives, model assumptions, and constraints. | Which candidate configuration best meets the selected objective within the modeled limits? |
These methods can pass information between one another. A detailed component model might inform a faster reduced-order model, which can then be evaluated repeatedly in a lap or control study. Higher detail may represent more physics, but it can also require more computation; a reduced model can support repeated scenario comparisons, provided its simplifications are suitable for the question. Neither detail nor speed alone establishes that a prediction is accurate.
How engineers use the models in a design cycle
- Define the decision and scenario. Specify whether the question concerns component sizing, cooling, setup, race strategy, or another choice. Select the track, speed or power demand, ambient and component temperatures, loads, and energy or regulatory constraints that apply to that scenario. Race-strategy conclusions are meaningful only in relation to the event or operating conditions modeled.
- Choose the physics that can change the answer. Couple only the domains relevant to the decision, while retaining important interactions. For a battery, electrical behavior produces heat, and temperature in turn affects electrical performance. Ansys describes a Porsche Formula E example that couples an equivalent-circuit electrical model with a reduced-order thermal model to estimate state of charge, voltage, and temperature against a track-specific power profile.
- Compare candidate designs or controls. Engineers can evaluate options such as cooling layouts, powertrain choices, motor sizing, torque distribution, aero packages, and energy-management strategies virtually. This can help screen alternatives before each physical iteration. Ansys characterizes its Porsche case study as reducing the need for physical prototypes; that is a vendor’s description of its case, not a universal or independently quantified reduction for all teams.
- Check predictions against evidence. Compare the model with appropriate component tests, rig measurements, track data, or telemetry. A Canopy technical article describes CFD work on a simplified Formula E Gen 3 car and comparison of simulated push-rod loads with race telemetry. Agreement under checked conditions supports confidence for those conditions; it does not establish that the model will be accurate in every setup or operating regime.
- Use optimization only after setting the objective. State what is being improved—such as lap time, energy use, or a temperature margin—and what constraints apply. An optimizer finds a candidate within that mathematical setup; changing the objective, constraints, model fidelity, or assumptions can change the result.
Battery temperature, usable energy, and race conditions
Battery performance is a clear example of why electrical and thermal behavior should be considered together. A track-specific power profile represents how demand changes during a lap or scenario. An electrical model can estimate quantities such as voltage and state of charge, while a thermal model estimates temperature response. Coupling them helps show whether a power-demand strategy that looks attractive electrically also creates a temperature concern, or whether temperature changes affect the modeled electrical output.

The Ansys / Synopsys Porsche case describes an equivalent-circuit model linked to a reduced-order thermal model for this purpose. The case is useful as an illustration of a practical modeling choice: it combines representations of the relevant battery behavior without claiming that every cell and every physical process is modeled in exhaustive detail. The outputs depend on the inputs and assumptions, including the power profile and thermal conditions. A result for one track scenario should not be treated as a universal battery limit or race recommendation.
At vehicle level, energy management connects battery behavior to lap or race decisions. One 2024 preprint by Geisberger and coauthors describes an optimization-based energy and thermal management approach with a 47-kilometer prediction horizon computed in 2.5 seconds. That is a result reported for the paper’s proposed method, not a production-car benchmark or evidence that every racing control system can plan over the same distance in that time. It illustrates why reduced or optimization-oriented methods can be useful when many operating decisions must be considered within limited computation time.
Downforce, drag, and the energy tradeoff
Aerodynamics links vehicle grip to energy demand. Downforce presses the car toward the track and can support tire grip, but it comes with drag. At racing speeds, the resulting balance affects how a car corners and how much energy is needed to move through the air. The best aero choice therefore depends on the track, driving conditions, and the constraints of the race rather than on a simple goal of maximizing downforce.

Porsche’s April 20, 2026 announcement of its GEN4 Formula E car, the 975 RSE, reports 600 kW (816 PS), permanent all-wheel drive, and new aerodynamic packages. Porsche technical project leader Olivier Champenois said: “Within roughly a decade, Formula E has become so fast that aerodynamic downforce is now a necessity. However, downforce always comes with drag and increases energy consumption.” That statement frames the design tension; it is not a quantified claim about the lap-time or energy effect of a particular package.
Models can help compare aero and cooling alternatives, then carry their predicted loads or drag consequences into vehicle- or lap-level analysis. The comparison is only useful if the scenarios reflect the intended use. An aero package that is attractive for one circuit or one energy target may not be the best choice under different conditions. The model should therefore make its scenario and objective explicit rather than presenting an isolated downforce or drag number as the answer.
When optimization results are useful—and how to read them
Optimization can explore many candidate settings more systematically than selecting one by intuition alone, but it does not discover a universal optimum. The output is conditional on the model, design space, objective, constraints, and comparator. A predicted improvement in one measure can also have tradeoffs in another, such as energy use, temperature, grip, or durability.

- Torque vectoring: A 2021 paper by Stan Broere, Jorn van Kampen, and Mauro Salazar reports more than 4% improvement in achievable lap time from torque vectoring compared with a fixed power split in its Formula Student Netherlands simulation case. This is a modeled result for that case, not a measured Formula E gain or a general figure for electric race cars.
- Following-car energy and overtaking: Canopy’s July 23, 2026 article describes Alexandra Gray’s MSc research in an energy-limited Formula E Gen 3 simulation. It reports a 0.9-second-per-lap gain for a following car at three car lengths, and around 1.4 seconds per lap at 0.5 car lengths. These numbers belong to that case study and its modeled conditions; they do not establish a universal benefit of following another car.
The examples are not directly comparable. They concern different vehicles, assumptions, methods, objectives, and scenarios. Read every performance number with its comparator and model scope attached. A useful result says what was modeled, what was changed, what it was compared against, and which constraint mattered.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How simulation supports reliability without guaranteeing it
Simulation can help engineers look for conditions that may threaten performance or component life before those conditions are encountered on track. Thermal analysis can identify modeled overheating risk; structural analysis can examine response to loads; coupled models can reveal when a gain in one area creates a new temperature or stress concern elsewhere. This makes reliability a design objective that can be analyzed alongside performance, not an automatic property of using simulation.
The evidence described here does not quantify an overall reliability improvement for a complete electric race car, nor does it establish a general development-time reduction. A model can be incomplete, use uncertain inputs, or represent a narrower range of conditions than the eventual car experiences. Testing components and vehicles, comparing predictions with measurements, and investigating mismatches remain part of building confidence. Validation applies to the tested evidence and conditions; it is not proof for every possible race scenario.

Formula E’s current simulation context
On October 7, 2026, Formula E announced COMSOL as its Official Multiphysics Partner. The announcement says the collaboration will use COMSOL Multiphysics and explore simulation apps and digital twins. COMSOL’s announcement describes an integrated environment for physics-based modeling with coupled-physics capabilities, and identifies electric-motor modeling and system-level simulation among capabilities associated with version 2027, which it said was scheduled for release later in autumn 2026. That schedule is a company statement; it should not be read as confirmation that the version has already shipped.
These announcements show Formula E and a software provider positioning multiphysics tools for real engineering challenges. A partnership or announced capability is not, by itself, independent evidence that a particular simulation has improved a car’s lap time or reliability. The value of any tool depends on the model built with it, the engineering question, and how predictions are checked.
What to look for when judging a simulation claim
When a team, researcher, or software company reports a simulation result, the following details determine how much can be inferred from it:
- Physics and coupling: Does the model include the domains that could materially affect the result, such as battery electrothermal behavior, motor electromagnetics, cooling flow, structural loads, aerodynamics, or vehicle dynamics?
- Fidelity and runtime: Is it a detailed component or CFD model, or a reduced-order/system-level model intended for repeated analysis? What simplifications are relevant?
- Operating scenario: Is the result for a qualifying lap, energy-limited race pace, endurance stint, specific circuit, or stated ambient condition?
- Validation: Was it checked against component tests, rig or wind-tunnel data, or telemetry, and under which conditions?
- Decision and tradeoff: Was the model used for component sizing, cooling design, setup, race strategy, or optimization? What happened to other important measures, such as energy use, temperature, or grip?
These questions help separate a useful, bounded engineering result from a headline number detached from its assumptions. The central benefit of multiphysics simulation is not that it replaces engineering judgment or track evidence; it gives engineers a way to examine interacting effects and narrow the physical options they need to investigate.
