Multi-material 3D printers handle a material change in one of two fundamentally different ways. A single-nozzle system unloads one filament and feeds another through the same hot nozzle, pushing residual molten plastic out during the transition. A multi-tool system selects a separate physical tool assigned to the next material. Both approaches may need transition management, but the source and destination of the waste are different.
Purge material is not automatically pointless scrap: it clears the previous material, stabilizes flow, and protects color or material boundaries. The practical goal is to put that transition extrusion somewhere useful—such as a wipe tower, infill, or a sacrificial object—without letting contamination show on the finished part or compromising reliability.
Two switching architectures: one nozzle or multiple tools
Before changing slicer settings, identify how the printer changes materials. The mechanism determines why purging occurs and which waste-reduction options are realistic.

In a single-nozzle machine, the nozzle still contains a volume of melted plastic when the current filament is withdrawn. The next filament enters, melts, and displaces that residue. The output therefore changes gradually rather than switching instantly from one material to the next.

The upper cover has a snap button structure, and the sealing performance is good. When the drying box is working, the sealing hole needs to be opened to allow moisture to drain out. When not in use, the sealing hole needs to be closed to keep the consumables dry.
During that interval, the extruded strand can contain a mixture of the old and new colors or polymers. A slicer such as PrusaSlicer lets you define purge volumes for individual filament transitions. Those values determine how much material is extruded before the toolpath returns to the model.
Physical tool changing
A multi-tool printer assigns each material to a physical tool and selects the tool associated with the next material. The print file stores material and tool assignments; on supported configurations, those assignments can also be remapped from the printer’s control menu. The Original Prusa XL is an example of this architecture.
Selecting another tool avoids pushing a long length of mixed filament through one shared nozzle, but it does not guarantee that every job can run without a purge structure. Nozzle condition, material combination, and the reliability margin chosen in the profile still matter.
| Characteristic | Single-nozzle filament swap | Physical multi-tool system |
|---|---|---|
| What changes | Filament is unloaded and another filament is fed through the same nozzle. | The printer selects a physical tool assigned to the next material. |
| Why transition extrusion occurs | Residual molten filament must be displaced and flow must become consistent. | Transition management depends on the tool, nozzle and material setup; a tower may still be used for reliability. |
| Typical waste destinations | Wipe or purge tower, infill, or a separate wipe object. | Often a tower, though suitable Original Prusa XL jobs can be configured without one. |
| Main contamination risk | Old material remains in the shared melt path during the first part of the new color. | Cross-contamination is reduced by separate tools, but material-specific flow and cleanliness still affect the result. |
What purge does during a material change
Clearing residual melt
Purge extrusion carries the previous material out of the nozzle or tool path. The first strands after a change are therefore used to reach a predictable composition and flow rate before the printer deposits material on a visible surface.
Protecting color boundaries
The amount required depends on the direction of the transition. Prusa’s published example notes that black-to-white needs more purging than white-to-black because a small amount of dark pigment is much easier to see in a light filament. A value that works for white-to-black can leave gray streaks when used in the opposite direction.

Accounting for specialty materials
Soluble support filaments and materials containing additives such as glitter can require higher purge volumes. Additives or a strongly contrasting pigment can remain visible in the next material longer than a transition between similar, opaque colors. Treat slicer defaults as starting points and tune them for the actual pair and direction of materials.
Why printers use a wipe or purge tower
A wipe tower is a sacrificial structure beside the model. The printer deposits transitional extrusion there instead of on the part. Prusa describes its smart wipe tower as a way to maintain sharp color transitions and stable filament flow while aiming to minimize wasted filament.
Tower size is driven mainly by the number of material changes and the purge volume for those changes, not by the model’s outside dimensions. A small object with dozens of color changes can need a larger tower than a large object with only one transition. Use the slicer’s preview and G-code preview to inspect the tower footprint, height, and final deposited volume before starting a long print.
How the slicer and printer coordinate a change
- Classify the hardware. Confirm whether the machine shares one nozzle among filaments or has dedicated physical tools. Do not apply a tool-changer workflow to a filament-switching system.
- Assign materials and tools. In the project, assign each filament to the intended material slot or physical tool. On supported Original Prusa XL setups, tool assignments can be remapped from the printer menu if the loaded tools differ from the file’s original mapping.
- Set transition volumes. Configure purge amounts for the specific material pair and direction. Increase the value for dark-to-light changes or for specialty and soluble filaments when residual color or material remains visible.
- Choose a waste destination. Keep a tower for the broadest reliability, or select infill, a separate object, an internal skeleton option, or—only where the printer and materials support it—a tower-free workflow.
- Preview the result. Check the tower and tool-change moves in the slicer and G-code previews. Look for a tower that could collide with the machine or an infill destination that leaves too little wall thickness to hide purge color.
- Prepare the materials. Dry the filaments when required by their material characteristics. Prusa identifies filament quality, especially dryness, as important when attempting tower-free XL printing.
- Monitor the first transitions. Watch the first changes rather than assuming a default profile will work for every spool. If the new color is still contaminated, return to the tower workflow or raise the relevant purge amount.
Ways to reduce purge waste—and what each costs
Keep the wipe tower as the reliability baseline
A tower gives every transition a predictable place to stabilize flow. It is the safest general choice when materials contrast strongly, when a soluble support filament is involved, or when the exterior must remain clean. The trade-off is additional print time, footprint, and filament that does not become part of the model.
Wipe into infill
Routing transition material into infill uses space that is already inside the model. This can substantially reduce a dedicated tower when the part has enough infill volume and thick enough exterior walls.

- 4 Spool Capacity: SUNLU 3D printer filament dryer S4 can dry up to four 1kg 3D printer filaments, enhancing drying efficiency and printing quality when drying while printing
- Large Dimensions: SUNLU filament dryer S4 is notably large in size with external dimensions of 460(L) * 220(W) * 310(H)mm, internal dimensions of 450(L) * 175(W) * 207(H)mm, and net weight of 4KG

- 3 Circulation Fans: Three high-quality fans circulate air inside, ensuring consistent temperature across the entire area for more even drying with 360 surround heating
The method is not invisible in every model. A dark purge color can show through light outer walls, especially with thin shells or sparse infill. Check wall thickness, exterior color, and infill density before enabling it; a part that looks efficient in the preview can have visible internal color bleeding after printing.
Wipe into a separate object
A sacrificial or functional second object can receive the purge material. This converts tower waste into a potentially usable object, but the object will contain mixed colors. Flow can also be less stable during a transition, so the secondary object may show surface artifacts even when the primary model remains clean.
Reduce sparse tower layers
Prusa documents a no-sparse-layers setting as experimental. In its set of multi-material projects, Prusa reports 3.16% lower total print time and 16.17% less filament deposited on the wipe tower with that option. Those figures are vendor-reported results for that project set, not a universal guarantee, and the documentation does not state a publication year.
Prusa also warns about possible collision concerns for the older MK3S setup described with this feature. Place the tower carefully and use crash detection where available. An experimental setting that saves filament is not worth a failed print if the tower can be struck by the tool or gantry.
Reuse purge in an object’s internal skeleton
Creality Print 7.3.0 release notes describe routing some purge into available internal object-skeleton space. External tower purging remains available when the internal capacity is insufficient or when a higher-risk area needs extra protection.

The release notes caution that the approach is unsuitable for thin walls, solid models with little internal space, or parts with strict structural requirements. Treat these statements as release-note guidance rather than independent comparative testing. A hollow decorative part may tolerate internal purge; a load-bearing component may not.
Disable the tower only in a suitable tool-changing workflow
Prusa states that the Original Prusa XL can print true multi-material jobs without a purge or wipe tower. Its standard profile nevertheless leaves the tower enabled by default to cover more materials and maximize reliability. Prusa specifically emphasizes filament quality and dryness and recommends monitoring prints when trying tower-free operation.
That capability should not be generalized to every multi-tool printer. A tower-free result depends on the printer’s tool design, the materials, the profile, and the condition of each filament. If the first transitions show contamination or unstable extrusion, restore the tower instead of treating zero tower waste as a target that overrides print quality.
| Method | Best fit | Primary trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated wipe tower | High-contrast materials, soluble supports, unfamiliar combinations, or reliability-critical parts. | Consumes extra filament, time, and build area. |
| Wipe into infill | Parts with ample infill and thick, opaque outer walls. | Dark purge can show through light or thin exterior walls. |
| Wipe into a separate object | Jobs where a mixed-color sacrificial or functional object is acceptable. | Secondary-object surfaces can show transition artifacts and mixed colors. |
| No-sparse-layers option | Users willing to test an experimental tower configuration. | Vendor-reported savings; collision risk requires careful placement, especially on the documented older MK3S setup. |
| Internal object-skeleton purge | Parts with sufficient noncritical internal volume, using a version that supports the feature. | Not suitable for thin walls, solid models, or strict structural requirements. |
| No tower on Original Prusa XL | Suitable XL material combinations with dry, good-quality filament and active monitoring. | Broader material coverage and reliability may require the default tower. |
Troubleshooting common purge and switching problems
The new color starts gray or streaked
Check the direction of the change first. Increase purge for dark-to-light transitions, then test the same pair again. Specialty additives and soluble support materials may also need more purge than the profile default.

Purge color appears on the model’s exterior
If wiping into infill, inspect wall thickness and infill density. Dark material can telegraph through light, thin walls. Move the purge back to a tower or increase the model’s visual barrier rather than accepting a cosmetic defect.

The wipe object looks rough
A separate object receives transitional extrusion while flow is stabilizing, so surface artifacts and mixed colors are expected risks. Use it only when its appearance is unimportant or when it is deliberately sacrificial.
The tower is too large for the build area
Review the number of color changes and each transition volume; those are the main drivers of tower size. A large model does not automatically need a large tower, while a small model with many changes can. Reduce unnecessary material changes or choose a suitable internal destination if the part permits it.
The machine risks hitting the tower
Reposition the tower and inspect the movement preview. With the experimental no-sparse-layers workflow described for an older MK3S setup, Prusa specifically advises care with placement and crash detection.

Check filament dryness and quality before changing more slicer values. If transitions remain unreliable, re-enable the tower. The XL’s documented tower-free capability is conditional, while the default profile favors coverage of more materials and a wider reliability margin.
How to compare multi-material systems fairly
A meaningful comparison should describe the switching architecture before quoting waste figures. A printer that changes filament through one nozzle and a printer that selects dedicated tools are solving different transition problems.
- Switching architecture: identify shared-nozzle filament swaps versus physical tool selection.
- Transition cleanliness: examine how each system controls residual material and stabilizes flow.
- Waste destinations: record whether purge goes to a tower, infill, a wipe object, an internal skeleton, or nowhere visible.
- Material coverage: check which color, additive, soluble, and support-material combinations the profile is designed to handle.
- Reliability conditions: include filament dryness, profile defaults, monitoring requirements, and any experimental settings.
- Evidence quality: distinguish manufacturer documentation and release-note claims from independently measured tests. The reported 3.16% time and 16.17% tower-filament reductions apply to Prusa’s project set, not to every printer or model.
The practical decision is not simply “which printer wastes the least.” Choose the architecture and purge destination that keep the surfaces clean, preserve the part’s structural requirements, and leave enough reliability margin for the materials you actually use.
