A multi-camera phone setup turns each phone into a network video source: camera apps send feeds over a shared local network to compatible production software, where an operator can monitor and switch between them. The number of feeds your network can carry depends on each feed’s resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate, plus wireless conditions and the receiving system. Low delay is not the same as synchronized capture: a feed can arrive quickly without the phones exposing their camera sensors at the same instant.

How a multi-camera phone setup works

Each phone captures video and sends it to a receiver over an IP network. The receiver discovers or connects to the sources and presents them for monitoring and switching. The production system can then send the selected or composed program to a live-stream or conferencing destination. The camera app, transport format, phone, receiver and production software all have to work together; a phone that can send video is not automatically compatible with every receiver.

  1. Capture: A camera app uses a phone’s front or rear camera and encodes the video. The NDI Camera app, for example, lists camera selection, autofocus, zoom, high/medium/low bandwidth modes, a connection meter and tally status.
  2. Transport: The encoded feed travels over the local network. Each phone contributes another active stream, so the network load grows with the number of simultaneous cameras and the settings used.
  3. Receive and switch: Compatible receiving or production software discovers and receives the feeds. An operator can monitor sources and choose which to put on program.
  4. Publish: The production system sends the resulting program to its destination. The exact output setup depends on that system and destination; there is no single platform configuration that applies to every workflow.

NDI describes its mobile apps as sources for live production and conferencing, and its app ecosystem as sending and receiving video over standard networks. That illustrates the workflow, not a requirement to use one particular transport: the relevant criterion is compatibility across the camera app, network, receiver and production software. See NDI Apps for the vendor’s app ecosystem overview.

What determines bandwidth

There is no single bandwidth number for “a phone camera.” The required rate depends on the stream format, resolution, frame rate, codec and implementation. Higher resolutions and frame rates generally mean more data, while codec choice can change the bitrate needed for a given format. Treat published rates as format-specific planning figures, not as a promise that every app will use precisely that amount in every moment.

NDI’s documentation provides the following examples. The HX2 and HX3 figures below are vendor-published approximate rates for the named formats, with average glass-to-glass latency figures. HX3’s detailed H.265 table separately gives maximum bandwidth for specified formats and a proxy rate. The figures describe NDI formats or stated table conditions; they are not independent tests of a particular phone or a complete setup.

Format and stated measurement H.264 H.265 Latency figure
NDI HX2, 1080p60 approximate rate 16 Mbps 11 Mbps Average glass-to-glass latency under 150 ms
NDI HX2, 2160p60 approximate rate 30 Mbps 21 Mbps Average glass-to-glass latency under 150 ms
NDI HX3, 1080p60 approximate rate 62 Mbps 50 Mbps Average glass-to-glass latency under 100 ms
NDI HX3, 2160p60 approximate rate 110 Mbps 84 Mbps Average glass-to-glass latency under 100 ms

These format comparisons are published in NDI’s documentation for NDI HX2 and NDI HX3, accessed in 2026. Do not assume that HX2 and HX3 are interchangeable settings: compare the actual format and codec supported by both the phone-side app and receiver.

NDI’s HX3 H.265 table specifies maximum bandwidth for 8-bit 4:2:0 streams in the listed formats. It also lists a 640×360 25/30p proxy at 3 Mbps for each line. These are table-specific maximums and proxy figures, not generic measured rates for phone apps.

Estimate the load from concurrent feeds

For a first-pass estimate, multiply a chosen per-feed rate by the number of phones transmitting at once. For example, four streams at the HX2 1080p60 H.264 approximate rate of 16 Mbps each represent about 64 Mbps of video payload in total. Four HX3 1080p60 H.264 streams at the approximate 62 Mbps rate represent about 248 Mbps. These are arithmetic based on NDI’s per-format figures, not a guarantee of required network throughput or a recommendation for a router.

Actual network demand also needs room for protocol overhead, other traffic, bitrate variation and wireless conditions. The cited sources do not set a universal overhead percentage or headroom rule. Plan using the specific app’s actual codec and settings where available, then test the complete set of feeds together rather than relying only on a per-camera estimate.

An internet plan’s advertised download speed is not the same as the capacity or reliability of the local Wi-Fi carrying camera feeds. Likewise, internet upload speed alone does not establish how many sources a local network can transport reliably.

What latency means in practice

Latency is the time taken for video to travel through the system. A phone feed’s end-to-end delay may include capture, encoding, network transport, decoding, switching or buffering, and display. “Glass-to-glass” refers to a camera-to-display path metric; a format’s published latency figure should not be treated as a guarantee for every phone, Wi-Fi environment, receiver and display in the chain.

NDI states that “Latency is both a factor of the network connection and the endpoint products.” Its encoding and decoding documentation discusses technical codec latency while cautioning that practical implementations differ. The HX2 and HX3 figures above are useful vendor-published references for their formats, but actual performance depends on the connection and endpoints.

For a live production, the operational question is whether each feed arrives consistently enough to preview and switch. A setup that occasionally freezes, drops frames or changes delay under load can be harder to operate than a steady feed with a somewhat longer delay. Check behavior with all cameras active, in their intended positions and with expected network traffic present.

Latency is not capture synchronization

Several feeds can have low arrival delay and still show the same event at different capture times. That distinction matters for stereo vision, motion analysis, computational photography and multi-view reconstruction, where the phones may need to expose their sensors at nearly the same instant. Ordinary live-streaming apps and a fast network do not by themselves establish that kind of synchronization.

Hardware genlock or triggering and post-capture alignment are other approaches discussed in the literature. A clapperboard can help align recordings afterward, but it does not make the phones’ sensors capture simultaneously; the 2018 paper describes its limit as half a frame duration in the context it discusses.

Network requirements and Wi-Fi planning

NDI documents HX as useful in Wi-Fi and WAN contexts because it can deliver similar video quality at a lower rate than NDI High Bandwidth. That is not a guarantee that any Wi-Fi network can carry any number of cameras, and it does not establish a universal minimum throughput, router model, Wi-Fi generation or access-point count. The appropriate setup depends on the number and format of streams and the conditions at the location.

Before relying on a network for a show, check these practical points:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Local discovery: Put the phones and receiver on a network that permits local source discovery and video traffic. Verify that the receiver can actually see each phone on the intended network; network policies can differ between homes and venues.
  • Aggregate load: Estimate the combined load from the actual stream format and simultaneous feed count. Lowering resolution, frame rate or bandwidth settings can reduce demand when the network is constrained.
  • Real-world conditions: Test from the phones’ intended positions, with all feeds running and expected background traffic present. Watch for freezes, dropped frames, changing delay and audio/video misalignment.
  • Receiver connection: A wired receiver connection may be considered as part of a network design, but the cited sources do not establish that it is mandatory or quantify a particular wired/Wi-Fi arrangement.
  • Capacity margin: Leave practical capacity for traffic beyond the nominal video payload. No universal percentage is established, so judge the margin by testing the intended workload rather than adopting an unsupported fixed rule.

The NDI Camera app’s high, medium and low bandwidth modes and on-screen connection meter can help an operator assess and adjust a feed. They do not replace a multi-phone test: a good indicator on one phone says little about how several sources behave together. NDI’s encoding guidance also notes that HX’s lower bitrate may suit Wi-Fi and WAN links, while still making practical behavior dependent on the network and endpoints.

Set up and validate the system

Exact menus vary by app, phone OS and receiver, so use the labels available in the compatible software rather than assuming a universal UI path. The following sequence tests the dependencies in the order that most often makes diagnosis easier.

  1. Confirm compatibility. Check that each phone’s OS and model are supported by the chosen camera app, and that the receiving software accepts the same transport format. The NDI Camera page listed Android version 1.64 and iOS version 3.1 when accessed in 2026; those listings can change, so check current app listings and device support before choosing phones.
  2. Choose a target format. Set a consistent resolution, frame rate and codec where the tools permit it. Start with the quality actually needed for the production; the highest setting is not automatically the best choice if it makes the network unstable.
  3. Join the intended local network. Connect each phone and receiver to the network that will be used in the venue or home. Confirm source discovery on the receiver before adding the next camera.
  4. Verify each camera individually. Check that the correct front or rear camera is selected, focus and framing work, and the receiver displays a stable feed. Use app indicators such as a connection meter or tally when available.
  5. Run all feeds at once. Keep them active long enough to observe behavior under the expected workload. Check each source for freezes, drops or unstable delay, then test switching between feeds.
  6. Check sound and the final display path. If audio is part of the program, check its alignment against picture after capture, transport and switching. Assess delay at the actual monitoring or output display, since that is where users experience the complete chain.

Troubleshoot the symptoms you see

  • A phone does not appear in the receiver: Check that the phone and receiver are on the intended local network and that local discovery and video traffic are allowed. Confirm compatibility between the sender and receiving software before changing image quality settings.
  • Feeds work separately but fail together: The aggregate load or wireless conditions may be the issue. Reduce stream settings or use a lower-bandwidth option, then repeat the simultaneous test. A successful single-camera test does not establish capacity for several feeds.
  • Video freezes or drops under load: Compare behavior with fewer active streams and with reduced resolution, frame rate or bandwidth settings. If stability improves, the original combination of format, feed count and network conditions was not reliable enough for the workload.
  • Switching looks delayed or inconsistent: Measure or observe the full camera-to-display path, not just the transport format’s published latency figure. Network conditions, endpoints, buffering and display processing can all affect the result.
  • Feeds arrive quickly but do not line up in time: Treat this as a capture-synchronization requirement, not simply a network-latency problem. Use a workflow designed for the required timing or align recordings after capture; do not infer sensor synchronization from low streaming delay.

Choose settings for the job

For a live show where an operator needs to preview and switch viewpoints, prioritize stable delivery and testable switching delay over maximum resolution alone. For multi-view analysis or image stitching, determine whether the phones must capture at the same instant; ordinary network streaming is not evidence that they do. For either workflow, select the stream format according to receiver compatibility and estimate aggregate load before testing at the intended location.
