There is no single water target proven specifically to prevent constipation. For most adults, the NHS general hydration guide of 6–8 cups or glasses of fluid a day is a reasonable starting point, but it is not a constipation prescription. Your needs change with body size, health, activity, climate, pregnancy, breastfeeding and illness. Fluids are most useful when they prevent dehydration and allow dietary fiber to work properly; drinking extra water by itself has not been shown reliably to prevent or treat chronic constipation.

If you have a fluid restriction, kidney or heart disease, swallowing problems, or another condition affecting fluid balance, ask a clinician for an individual target rather than forcing more water.

What the daily amount actually means

The NHS figure is a broad guide for ordinary hydration, not a dose tested for constipation prevention. It includes fluids from drinks and can be adjusted according to how much water you lose. Pale-yellow urine is a practical NHS sign that you are probably drinking enough; consistently dark urine, a dry mouth, dizziness or unusually infrequent urination can indicate that you need advice about dehydration.

When you may need more fluid

Fluid requirements can rise during hot weather, prolonged or strenuous activity, fever, vomiting, diarrhea and other illnesses that increase losses. Pregnancy and breastfeeding also change requirements. NIDDK says the appropriate amount depends on your size, health, activity level and where you live, rather than on a universal constipation number. Its advice is: “Ask a health care professional how much liquid you should drink each day based on your size, health, activity level, and where you live.” See NIDDK’s constipation nutrition guidance.

Why forcing water can be counterproductive

More is not automatically better. Rapidly consuming very large amounts can disturb blood sodium, and people with prescribed fluid limits may worsen their condition by ignoring that limit. Aim for regular intake that keeps you hydrated, not a challenge to finish a particular number of bottles.

How hydration relates to fiber and bowel movements

Constipation is not defined solely by how much you drink. NIDDK describes it as symptoms such as fewer than three bowel movements per week, hard or lumpy stools, painful or difficult passage, or a feeling that stool has not fully emptied. Dehydration can make stool harder, while adequate liquid helps fiber absorb water and form stool that is easier to pass.

Fiber is the partner intervention

NIDDK recommends that adults generally get 22–34 grams of fiber daily, depending on age and sex. Increase fiber gradually from foods such as vegetables, fruit, beans, whole grains, nuts and seeds, and increase fluids alongside it. A sudden large fiber increase without enough liquid can cause bloating or make stools harder for some people.

Fluids are not a stand-alone cure

Water can correct dehydration, but constipation may also reflect medication effects, low fiber intake, inactivity, irritable bowel syndrome, pelvic-floor problems or another medical condition. If you are already adequately hydrated, simply adding more water may not change bowel frequency or stool consistency.

What clinical evidence says about adding extra water

The 2025 British Dietetic Association guideline found insufficient evidence that increasing fluid intake alone, beyond a person’s habitual intake, improves chronic constipation. That conclusion is different from saying fluids are unimportant: it means trials have not established a reliable benefit from extra water as an isolated treatment.

A combined water-and-fiber study

The guideline describes one study in which participants received 2 litres of supplemental water per day together with a diet containing 25 grams of fiber per day. Their stool frequency improved and laxative use fell compared with the control group. Because both water and fiber changed, the result cannot be attributed to water alone, and it does not prove that every constipated person should drink 2 litres in addition to normal intake.

High-mineral water is a separate question

Three randomized trials involving 539 people compared high-mineral-content water with low-mineral water. The guideline reports a relative likelihood of clinical benefit of 1.47 (95% confidence interval 1.20–1.81), but rates the evidence as low certainty. This tested mineral composition, not simply a larger volume of ordinary tap or bottled water, so it should not be generalized as proof that drinking more water works. No particular brand or bottle is medically required.

Intervention or advice What the evidence or guidance supports What it does not establish
General daily hydration guide NHS suggests 6–8 cups or glasses of fluid daily for many adults, adjusted for circumstances. A constipation-specific quota or guaranteed symptom prevention.
Extra fluid alone 2025 BDA guideline finds insufficient evidence for benefit beyond habitual intake in chronic constipation. That everyone should force additional water.
Water plus fiber One study used 2 L/day supplemental water with 25 g/day fiber and reported better stool frequency and less laxative use. A water-only effect or a universal 2-litre prescription.
High-mineral-content water Low-certainty evidence of greater clinical benefit than low-mineral water; relative likelihood 1.47 (95% CI 1.20–1.81). Proof that ordinary tap water or any named product treats constipation.

A practical way to use fluids without overdoing them

  1. Start with your normal pattern. Record drinks for two or three typical days, including water, tea, coffee, milk and other non-alcoholic fluids. Compare that pattern with thirst, urine color and symptoms rather than abruptly doubling intake.
  2. Spread drinks across the day. Have fluid with meals and between meals instead of consuming a large volume at once. A routine is easier to sustain and less likely to cause nighttime urination or stomach discomfort.
  3. Increase fiber in small steps. Add one high-fiber food at a time and allow several days for your bowel to adjust. Keep fluids steady as fiber rises; the combination is the part most consistently supported by basic physiology and dietary guidance.
  4. Account for losses. On hot days, during exercise or when ill, replace fluids lost through sweat, vomiting or diarrhea. If you cannot keep fluids down, feel faint, or are urinating very little, seek medical advice rather than relying on a home target.
  5. Use convenience aids only if they help you drink regularly. Carrying a reusable water bottle can make ordinary hydration easier when you are away from home, but no capacity, material or brand has been shown to prevent constipation. Norfolk Community Health and Care NHS Trust includes carrying a bottle among practical hydration suggestions in its bowel-care guidance.
  6. Review medicines and routines. Opioid pain medicines, iron supplements, some antacids and several other drugs can cause constipation. Do not stop a prescribed medicine; ask the prescriber or pharmacist whether a dose change or bowel plan is appropriate. Regular movement and responding to the urge to use the toilet can also support bowel habits.

When to get individualized fluid advice

Medical fluid restrictions

People with heart failure, advanced kidney disease, some liver conditions, low blood sodium, or a clinician-prescribed fluid restriction should follow their care plan. The safe amount may be lower than a general public guide, and changes should be agreed with the treating team.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding and acute illness

These situations can alter fluid needs, but the right amount depends on your circumstances and local clinical advice. During persistent vomiting, diarrhea or fever, ask how to replace water and electrolytes safely; plain water alone may not address all losses.

A narrowly targeted NICE recommendation

NICE advises a minimum of 1.5 litres per day only for people with fecal incontinence who have hard stools and/or clinical dehydration, unless contraindicated. That recommendation is condition-specific and should not be presented as a universal constipation target. Read the NICE recommendations for the full context.

How to tell ordinary constipation from a problem needing care

Occasional hard stools may improve after addressing diet, activity and hydration, but persistent or recurrent symptoms deserve assessment. Contact a GP if constipation keeps returning or does not improve, particularly if you also have unexplained weight loss, unusual tiredness or abdominal pain. NHS advice is available on its constipation page.

Questions this guidance can answer

Should I drink more than the general guide if I am constipated?

Only if you are thirsty, dehydrated, losing extra fluid, or a clinician has advised it. If you are already hydrated, evidence does not show that simply adding water alone reliably resolves chronic constipation. Focus on a gradual fiber increase, regular meals and activity, and investigate medication or medical causes when symptoms persist.

Does coffee, tea or sparkling water count?

Most non-alcoholic drinks contribute to total fluid intake. Choose beverages you tolerate and can consume consistently. If caffeine worsens urgency, reflux or sleep, reduce it for those reasons rather than assuming it is a constipation treatment.

Is mineral water worth buying?

Trials of high-mineral water found a possible benefit, but the evidence is low certainty and does not identify a required product, dose or brand. Ordinary safe drinking water remains a practical choice; do not spend money on specialty water expecting a guaranteed effect.

Can children use the adult numbers?

No. The NHS 6–8-cup guide and the adult fiber range are not pediatric prescriptions. A child’s fluid needs depend on age, size, diet, activity and health. Ask a pediatric clinician for advice, especially when constipation is painful, recurrent or accompanied by vomiting or poor growth.

Bottom line

Use the NHS general hydration guide as a starting point, adjust it for your body and circumstances, and let urine color and clinical advice help you judge adequacy. Hydration supports fiber and prevents dehydration, but no fixed water quota has been proven to prevent constipation, and extra water alone is not a dependable treatment. Persistent, recurrent or alarming symptoms need medical assessment rather than an ever-larger water target.
